WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR HORSE'S HINDGUT IN SPRING?🌱

THE HINDGUT MICROBIOME OF YOUR HORSE IS SUPER SENSITIVE TO CHANGES. IT IS ESSENTIALLY FULL OF BENEFICIAL MICRO-ORGANISMS ACTING SYNERGISTICALLY TO FERMENT FIBRE

Grass at a basic level contains sugars and structural fibre (indigestible cellulose and lignin). The hindgut microbiome requires structural fibre to maintain a balance in the fibre fermenting micro-organisms.

Sugars are produced in the leaves of plants during daylight. The sunnier the day, the more rapid the photosynthesis and the more sugars manufactured. The first growth of grass in spring has very high levels of sugars and low levels of structural fibre therefore horses tend to eat more and the total intake of sugars will be high due to the volume of forage consumed. This can lead to imbalances between the different species of bacteria, which can then upset the microbial environment in the hindgut and cause an overgrowth of bad bacteria creating a hindgut imbalance.

What can I do to support my horse's hindgut during this time?

-Gradual changes in diet are always recommended and be aware of your pasture growth/flushes, (early morning pasture is best as it has the least sugar).
-Supply structural fibre in the form of hay.
-Remember energy in = energy out, your horse will have more energy during this time.
-Support the microbial populations with a protected probiotic and prebiotics

Maxia Digest helps to support the entire digestive system, including the hindgut as it contains prebiotics and a micro-encapsulated (protected) probiotic to repopulate the good bacteria and stabilise the hindgut microbiome 🐴

A champion jumps owner, trainer, jockey, and mentor Ken Browne had one of the most decorated careers in jumps racing history.

His fifty-year riding career is one of the most remarkable in New Zealand history, riding 156 winners from 1951 to 2001. What makes this record extraordinary is that Ken's activity and success in the saddle increased as he grew older, with his peak coming between the ages of forty-four and fifty-nine 🙌

As an owner and trainer Ken was even more successful, preparing more than 500 winners, initially in his own right and then, from 1983, in partnership with Ann. Together they won most of New Zealand's major jumping races, many of them several times 🏆

As we continue highlighting our racing legends, we spotlight the trailblazer horsewoman that is Ann Browne, who with her late husband Ken built a powerful jumping empire ❤️

Undoubtedly one of New Zealand racing's most iconic figures Browne has had a decorated career spanning over six decades.

Riding and the love of horses have been constants in Ann's life, when in 1979 she became the first woman to ride in an Amateur Riders race in New Zealand, remarkably having become a grandmother on the day before that ride 🤩

In 1983, Ann joined Ken in a training partnership and together they won most of New Zealand's major jumping races, many of them several times 🏆

Ima Heroine, Sydney Jones, Smart Hunter, Wanderlust, Toms Myth, Fair King, Big Brownie, Primo Canera, are just some of the winners in the famous Browne colours.
