Airway diseases are common in dogs, but there are lots of different types. Collecting airway secretions using a bronchoalveolar lavage is a useful way to diagnose which disease is present. This is effectively 'rinsing' the lungs & collecting the rinse water. The latest study by Dr Rhea Jagdhane of ARC Vets, funded by Healthy Pets NZ, is aiming to work out how we can optimise this procedure for both patient safetly, clinician confidence and getting the best samples.
