Airway diseases are common in dogs, but there are lots of different types. Collecting airway secretions using a bronchoalveolar lavage is a useful way to diagnose which disease is present. This is effectively 'rinsing' the lungs & collecting the rinse water. The latest study by Dr Rhea Jagdhane of ARC Vets, funded by Healthy Pets NZ, is aiming to work out how we can optimise this procedure for both patient safetly, clinician confidence and getting the best samples. With summer heating up, toxic algal blooms are more and more common.

Keep an ear to the ground on affected areas near you: look for posted warning on the news, social media, and council websites, and signage at high risk locations.

Always take fresh drinking water for your dog with you and wash them off in fresh water after swimming

Make sure you're aware of the symptoms and get help from your vet FAST if you think your dog has been affected. Symptoms include acute onset vomiting, diarrhoea, seizures, difficulty breathing and worse.

Check out this media release by our Principal Partner PD Insurance on algal blooms:

Dog owners take caution Fun times in and around water present risks While summer is a great time to have fun in and around New Zealand’s beaches, lakes,

The current parvovirus outbreak in Auckland is a timely reminder to make sure your dog is up to date with it's vaccinations against this deadly, but preventable disease.

If you've got a new puppy, make sure they complete their vaccination course (between 6-16 weeks of age) and keep them safe while socialising.

For more ideas on how to do this, check out this great guide put together by the NZ Veterinary Association:
