MetService Severe Thunderstorm Watch
Issued at 10:01am Sun 16 Jun 2024

Area: Northland
Valid: 6 hours from 6:00pm Sun 16 Jun to 12:00am Mon 17 Jun

An unstable northwest airflow lies over the northern North Island. There is a moderate risk of thunderstorms for Northland this evening, and whether these thunderstorms occur or not, there is a chance of localised downpours of 25 to 40 mm per hour. Conditions should start easing in the north after 10pm.

Rainfall of this intensity can cause surface and/or flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips.
Driving conditions will also be hazardous with surface flooding and poor visibility in heavy rain.

Note: A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are favourable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. People in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and monitor for possible Severe Thunderstorm Warnings.

For information on preparing for and keeping safe during a storm, see the Civil Defence Get Ready website

Updated 14/06 1.20 PM:

Both watches have now been either lifted or expired. As most of you can probably tell, the main rainfall system has now moved south of Northland.

The highest rainfall totals were in the east, with 62mm recorded at Otaika (southwest of Whangarei), and around Whakapara in the eastern Hills.

This afternoon and tomorrow are looking better weather wise but MetService is still forecasting some further showers and rainfall this afternoon, some of which may be heavy.

Enjoy your weekend everyone :)

Mōrena,
Just a quick update this morning: we have had no issues or road closures reported through to us overnight. However, as people head out on the roads this morning, please continue to take extra care while driving and watch out for any hazards.

Rainfall across the region has been mixed, with some areas receiving up to around 40 mm over the last 24 hour and some only receiving approximately 10 -15 mm, according to the regional council rainfall data: https://www.nrc.govt.nz/environment/environmental-data/environmental-data-hub/?moduleId=1

The MetService severe thunderstorm and Heavy rain watches are in place until later today, so please continue to keep an eye on the forecast as you head out and plan your day: https://www.metservice.com/national

_________________________________

The latest weather forecast for Northland has come through from MetService New Zealand and a Severe Thunderstorm Watch has now been added – this is on top of the Heavy rain watch that was issued earlier. These watches take effect from this afternoon(13/06) until tomorrow morning.

The addition of a Severe Thunderstorm Watch means that along with some of the heavy rain we are likely to receive, conditions are favourable for severe thunderstorms.

Even if thunder and lightning aren't observed there is a possibility of very heavy rain in localised areas that could cause surface and/or flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or valleys, and may also lead to slips.

So, it’s important to keep up to date with the forecast and plan accordingly.

If you’re going to be out on the roads, tonight or early tomorrow morning, be prepared to drive to the conditions, and watch out for hazards such as surface flooding, slips, and poor visibility due to heavy rain.

Before you head out on the roads tomorrow you can check for any road closures and delays on state highways at: https://www.journeys.nzta.govt.nz/journey-planner or follow NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi - Northland

You can also view any local road closures or report any roading issues to your local council via their page and website:
Whangarei District Council
Kaipara District Council
Far North District Council

For the latest forecast and information on these watches check out the MetService website: https://www.metservice.com/warnings/home -north

🟡MetService watches below:
🌨Heavy Rain Watch
Area: Northland
Period: 22hrs from 1pm Thu, 13 Jun - 11am Fri, 14 Jun
Forecast: Periods of heavy rain, and amounts may approach warning criteria. Thunderstorms and localised downpours possible. Moderate chance of upgrading to a Warning.

🌩Severe Thunderstorm Watch
Area: Northland
Valid: 20 hours from 3:00pm Thu 13 Jun to 11:00am Fri 14 Jun

Periods of heavy rain with thunderstorms and/or localised downpours are expected to affect Northland today and Friday morning.
Between 3pm today (Thursday) and 11am Friday morning, localised downpours of 25-40mm/h may affect parts of Northland at times.
These downpours could occur with or without thunderstorms.
Rainfall of this intensity can cause surface and/or flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips.
Driving conditions will also be hazardous with surface flooding and poor visibility in heavy rain.
The thunderstorm and downpour risk initially starts in the Far North this afternoon, then spreads southwards to other parts of Northland this evening.
