🔴 WARNING - contains surgical images 🔴 Freddie the beautiful Burmese was presented to our Pt Chevalier clinic 2 weeks ago as he had been feeling unwell for a couple of days. Freddie was admitted for some diagnostics and after performing an ultrasound, our vets suspected a foreign body in his stomach and recommended an exploratory laparotomy procedure. During the surgery our vets found a substantial amount of string in his small intestine and stomach, which they were able to completely remove. After spending some time to recover with us and Freddie was doing much better and was sent home. He came in today for his stitch removal and has been doing very well! 🩵🥰

**An update for our Point Chevalier clients**

You will likely be well aware of the extensive work being done in the Point Chevalier area to upgrade the roads and storm water system. As the different stages of this continue, it has arrived right on our little corner!

From Monday 15th April 2024, Point Chevalier Road heading North Bound (towards the beach) between Tui Street and Meola road is closed for development. This means traffic is being diverted with the help of traffic lights down Tui Street and along Huia Road while this work is happening.

With this diversion in place parking will also be limited outside the clinic on Tui Street and Point Chevalier Road. While we do have limited parking on site we ask that while these roadworks are happening that you allow extra time to your commute to help combat delays with traffic and limited parking.

We are hopeful this work won’t be for too long however know these things can take time!
If you find you are running late for your appointment, please ring our friendly reception team if you can safely and let us know. While we will do our best to accommodate you if the delay is too long we may need to reschedule the appointment if non urgent.

For further updates on the ongoing project please check ATs website:
www.at.govt.nz/ptc2w

Please see below a map of the diversion.

It’s that time of year! We often get clients complaining about finding small sesame seed like grains in their homes and we are sorry to say but these are fragments of tapeworms 🤢
Being a zoonotic parasite they can live in both animal and human intestines!
If you are finding these fragments in your home then it is extremely important to worm your pets (and probably yourselves) OR better yet stay on top of your pets worming treatments year round and avoid this fright all together! 🐈🐕🪱!

The greatest compliment we can receive as a company is our amazing clients referring our services to their friends and family. We are so grateful that we send out a voucher as a small token of thanks.

I spy with my little eye 👀

While enjoying a walk on the beach Deltas owners noticed she had something in her mouth. Well not just anything, she in fact had a fishing swivel and leader in her mouth and was chewing on some nylon 🫣OH NO!
Her owners brought her to our Pt Chev clinic where our team performed an x-ray to see if she had swallowed anything.
And look at that! She had managed to swallow a fishing hook 🪝
After consultation with the owners it was decided we would perform an exploratory laparotomy, opening the abdominal cavity and removing the foreign body while also searching for any other potential objects that could cause harm.
Thankfully for Delta nothing else was found and the surgery was a success!!
We are happy to report she has recovered beautifully with love and care from her family at home.
We love you Delta but we do hope we don’t see again too soon!!! 💋🐾

Have you ever seen a tiny mouse surgery!?! 🐭🩺
Dr Olaf worked his magic last week on nurse Sarah’s mouse Sunny. He performed an enucleation, surgically removing Sunny’s ulcerated eye, to give the wee mouse comfort and quality of life. We are pleased to report Sunny had a full recovery from her procedure and is running around as normal back at home with her house mate Buddy.

**PSA** Toxic Algae Season
If you are planning to take your dog for a walk along the river, keep them safe and learn what toxic algae looks like so you can avoid it. It grows as brown or black velvety mats on rocks in the riverbeds and can come loose and wash up on riverbanks. Dogs love the musty smell and taste of toxic algae, so please keep them on leads away from the water and never let them scavenge at the river’s edge. If you think your dog has swallowed toxic algae, IMMEDIATELY take them to your vet 🐾🩺👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️

Here at Veterinary Care we are devoted to supporting our staff in continued professional development.
Last Thursday our incredible Pt Chev head nurse Nat hosted a fun night of education for our nurses on “Anaesthesia” and “Fluid Therapy”.
The night comprised of the latest information and support to help continue our high level of care across our 3 clinics AND of course a delicious dinner and great banter!
Thank you again to our super star Nat for sharing her extensive knowledge and experience with the entire company, helping to expand not just her own but all of our nurses skills. We are very lucky to have someone of her calibre in our team 👩🏻‍⚕️🤩🐾

31/01/2023

🦠💉Canine Parvovirus is an extremely contagious and potentially fatal virus for dogs which seems to be making the rounds at the moment!

It is typically seen in young, unvaccinated puppies who contract it by having contact with the stool of an infected dog or indirect contact with contaminated environments such as parks, water bowls and even our hands.

Signs and symptoms can be vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy and a decrease in appetite. The vomiting and diarrhoea often becomes bloody due to the constant irritation to the throat and bowels.

The best prevention is to vaccinate your puppy. The first vaccination is given at 8 weeks and then 2 further boosters are required at 12 and 16 weeks of age. Your puppy is still vulnerable to this disease until all 3 boosters are given. Further vaccinations for the disease are also given at your routine annual vaccinations

"In 2020 I started working with the Veterinary Care Group at Point Chev and more recently have moved over to Balmoral as head nurse.
I have always known I wanted to work with animals so went straight into studying veterinary nursing after high school.
I am very passionate about stress-free handling and ensuring every patient that comes through our doors has all the attention and love they deserve.
Outside of work you can find me out with my horses and behind a camera."
