YODI! We finished up a big year on a festive note this week with a series of photos of dogs who are too cool for Christmas photo’s now 😂 Although I managed to get a great one of Yodi in the wind (scroll to the end). We had some incredible highlights with Yodi this year from skateboarding to sleeping over with my two, flying in a plane and even traveling overseas! He even performed at a retirement home with less than 3 weeks notice. I need a better word than pride to explain how I feel about this gorgeous boy. He has made me a better trainer and I love him for it!

ZEB! I refuse to just choose one of these pics of this handsome Aussie Shepherd boy so you get ALL of them! We headed out on a very hot day this week to practice our training goals but I made sure to bring the cooling vest to help keep him happy. Being near the river was an essential too! He had so much fun sniffing, exploring and peeing on everything but we also snuck in some recall training and focus around distractions. Huge highlight was an off leash recall where Zeb was in the river swimming towards a dog on the other side - so impressed! He really is such a character and I love working with him and his Mum. Can’t wait to see what 2025 has in store for this gorgeous boy!

ROSIE! This darling girl is a 12 week old Heading Dog pup and she’s deaf! She was destined for farm life but they noticed when she slept through a lot of loud noises that maybe things weren’t quite 100%. So she’s back home with her 🐕 Mum and the lovely family that raised her where she’ll now live as a pet dog - she seems very content! A big thank you to Estelle from Allsorts Dog Training for her expert advice on training a deaf pup and important considerations for her family. Rosie loved the enrichment toys, she’s very affectionate and cuddly so touch isn’t an issue and she’s already offering loads of lovely eye contact which is so important - keeping the lines of visual communication open when speech isn’t an option! We covered a huge amount and I’ve left them with lots to think about, but she picked up the introductory training super quick and was already responding to her 👍🏼 marker within a few minutes! Can’t wait to hear how she progresses and maybe even have her along to my teenage classes. She’s so sweet!

CHOJI! How’s that smile?! This handsome boy is a 5 month old Shiba Inu - a very cool breed and he’s a very cool pup! We had a fun session and he loved the enrichment toys, although he was absolutely not going to share with the other dogs in the house 😬😂 He has two senior Chihuahua’s as siblings so we talked about the dynamics of multi-dog households and how to keep everyone as safe and happy as possible. Especially because there’s a teenager in the mix now! He’s very bright and picked up the introductory training really quickly. I’m looking forward to hearing how he progresses!

BREE! This happy rascal is a 3 year old Maltese x Yorkie who had an absolute blast ripping around our training paddock and yelling at the goats 😂 She came to work on her reactivity around other dogs and she did so well! My lovely Storm helped her see that a big dog could be calm and boring - Bree even had a few sniffs! Off lead Bree was happy to check in with Mum and Dad then just move away to sniff. She found Otis a bit harder (and louder) but still managed to move in with them and settle pretty quickly. For a first session I was so impressed and look forward to hearing how she progresses with her training!

NACALA! This happy girl is a bit of a special mix, aged 15 months - Foxy X Jack Russell apparently but I’m convinced there is some sneaky Collie in there at least! We have spent the last few weeks working on helping her settle in to her new life and routines as she has just moved to Hawke’s Bay with her Mum. She is such a fun, smart wee girl and she has the best personality, so it’s really been a combination of helping to understand adolescence, the impact of change and stress, plus some great ways to give her outlets for her energy and smarts! She loooooved the enrichment toys, the Flirt Pole and she is AMAZING at scent work. In fact this is her face after 2 rounds of ‘Find It’! I think she’ll love her new home and they have a bunch of great tools to use if she has a bit of a ‘teenage day’ or needs a bit more of an outlet sometimes. I’ve loved working with her and I hope to see her around as well hearing how she settles in!

EIT! We had a blast talking to the students about animal training and enrichment yesterday 🐕❤️ Storm and Otis put on quite the show including showing off their tricks, eating their way through all the enrichment toys, loads of ‘talking’ from Otis and finishing up with selfies with Storm doing her iconic chin rest on their shoulder. So proud of my fur kids for helping spread some knowledge and laughs to kick off the week!

EIT animal care students enjoy learning some new training techniques from guest speaker , dog trainer today.

OSCAR! This gorgeous boy is a nearly 2 year old Lab X Collie and he’s got the best of both breeds I reckon! With those amazing Collie smarts we managed to cover a LOT in one session from recall to leash walking skills, calmness around distractions (especially other dogs!) and introduced him to the ‘Find It’ game to help with a lot of his training goals but also increasing his mental stimulation each day. He was so happy and had a lot of fun stalking then running away from the goats - he made it his reward in between training games 😂 He and his Mum have a great relationship and I think the tools and tweaks to current set-ups on his walks should help big time. Can’t wait to hear how they get on!

DOUGAL! This smily boy is a 10 year old Cairn Terrier and it gave me a lot of joy to help put that smile on his face today. He’s had a stressful time in the last few years including the grief of losing some close fur-siblings. Dogs do experience grief plus they’re sensitive to stress and change in the household, so when we we are looking at behavioral issue exploring that background is so important. Addressing what is driving behaviour if there are issues is crucial, not just trying to shut it down in the moment. Helping Dougal feel happier and calmer each day will mean he’s feeling less sensitive and worried about the small things, as well as being able to learn more easily because his brain isn’t so stressed. Seeing more of this happy face more often is our goal, using enrichment through play and meal times, introducing a verbal reassurance protocol and using the things he loves to create positive associations with people or situations. Also management! We are going to use safe spaces where he feels happy and make sure he isn’t put into situations that might be too hard right now. With these layers in place we should start to see some good progress in the coming weeks and months. I am looking forward to hearing how he gets on!

CYCLONE JIMMY! The impact of the cyclone on animals in Hawke's Bay continues and this gorgeous guy wants to help (alongside his amazing Mum!). After his incredible journey of recovery (read more below) he is raising donations to provide support via enrichment toys and training to companion animals affected by Cyclone Gabrielle in Hawke’s Bay and Tairāwhiri. They are also giving back to the SPCA and Pound Pooches HB to help second-chance dogs like him find forever homes. Anyone who wishes to support Cyclone Jimmy’s fundraiser can donate to 03-1753-0365236-22 or email [email protected]. If you have a dog that was impacted by the cyclone and would like to chat about support, get in touch! ROSIE! This wee girl is a 2 year old Mini Dachshund with mega personality! We caught up to discuss barking which is a common Dachshund complaint. She’s had a bit of a stressful time, combined with the turmoil of adolescence so part of our strategy is going to be some methods to help with de-stress so our behaviour change in those barky situations will be more likely to succeed. She looooooves enrichment toys and has a very good nose so adding some nosework games to do with the kids in the family will help in so many ways. Sniffing will make her feel happier and calmer, give her another (quieter) job to do in the back yard especially, improves her mental stimulation each day and will help with some sound desensitisation too. She went out looking for the bunny skin toy during our session and completely ignored the dog next door while she did it - very impressed! As she likes to survey the neighbourhood and alert to all and any movement, adding window frost film and/or moving the furniture is also on the plans for now. Just temporarily until the other layers come into effect. It’ll take a bit of time but here’s hoping for a happier, quieter girl in the coming weeks 🤞🏻

BELLA! This gorgeous girl is a 4 year old Pomchi who’s recently been rehomed and she’s been struggling with some stress and anxiety, especially when separated from her Mum. She absolutely adores her Mum and they have done some great work together already. In our session we discussed and explored a lot of techniques and ideas for helping Bella feel less stressed in her new world. She was so lovely with me and after about 15 minutes she was happy to come and take treats, investigate the enrichment toys and sneak off into the garden by herself with a tasty lambs ear! She enjoyed herself so much that she fell asleep at the end of the session - so lovely to see ❤️ Her Mum now has some new tools and techniques to try out and see if we can keep building her confidence and happiness. They have a lovely relationship and it would be wonderful for them to share more happy times together. Can’t wait to hear how they get on!

MARVIN! How’s that smile?! He’s so eager to please - I looooved meeting him and his family this week 😍 He’s a 4 year old who is FULL of beans and he’s been investing some of those beans into agility training but his biggest challenge is other dogs. They are VERY exciting! We caught up to practice some calm behaviour strategies around other dogs and he did so well! He clearly has a lovely relationship with his family and it was actually our goats that proved to be the biggest challenge 😂🫣 It was so awesome to meet them all and I can’t wait to hear how they get on!

WAIKAHU! If you missed it on Seven Sharp last night (Tuesday), here’s the story about this gorgeous girl and the community effort behind the scenes. I am so grateful to be a part of her journey (along with Storm and Otis) ❤️🐕

In the aftermath of Cyclone Gabrielle, there's been countless stories of survival and resiliance but none have gone on quite as long as the story of Kahu, a lost dog rescued by the community.

Proactive training for you and your dog

What is proactive training?

My aim is for you and your dog to get the best out of life by giving you some simple tools that help you train together and have fun doing it! Proactive training is all about better understanding your dog and being able to respond in positive, more effective ways, no matter what life might throw at you.

Concepts vs actions

So many of us just want a dog who’ll sit or stay when we ask them to. However modern approaches to training have made us realise that it’s just as important, if not more so, to have a dog who can be calm, or focused or even confident with new experiences. These form the essential foundation of so many actions that we want our dogs to learn.
