🚨 URGENT NOTICE 🚨

It is with deep concern that we inform you of a significant parvovirus outbreak in Auckland, with six confirmed cases reported today. To safeguard the well-being of our beloved pets, your collaboration during this critical period is essential.

Recognising the common symptoms of severe vomiting, profuse, often bloody diarrhea, and lethargy is vital. If you observe any of these signs, please remain in your car upon arrival and promptly inform us.

Importantly, parvovirus is preventable through vaccination. Starting at $70 for puppies and $75 for adults, our vaccination services are a key defense against this potentially devastating disease. Ensuring your pets are up-to-date on vaccinations is not just a precaution; it's a commitment to their long-term health and happiness.

For clients with symptomatic dogs, please note that a minimum deposit of $150 is now required to cover the consultation and parvo test—critical for early detection and treatment.

We share with you a picture of Aree, one of our outpatients today. With her owners' consent, we aim to raise awareness. She is receiving subcutaneous fluids, and injectable pain relief, antinausea and antibiotics. We do not know if she will survive this.

It's crucial to mention that, currently, we don't have quarantine facilities to accommodate intensive care of these cases. Therefore, we can only treat parvovirus cases as outpatients to prevent spreading the virus to our vulnerable patients who also come to see us.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call us or email us.

🐾Wednesday Wisdom🐾

5 Second Rule

Remember, if the pavement or sand is too hot for you, it is too hot for your pet! Your dog’s feet can get burnt and blistered on the hot ground, particularly hot pavements, asphalt or scorching beach sand. Check if it’s a safe temperature by placing the back of your hand on the pavement or sand for five seconds. If it’s too hot to keep your hand there then your pet shouldn’t be out walking on it.

UPDATE: ADOPTED 🎉🎉

UPDATE: ROSIE HAS A POTENTIAL ADOPTION! AND SHE HAS RESCUE BACKUP 💓✨️ MAGIC. THANK YOU SO, SO MUCH TO EVERYONE WHO SHARED HER POST, OFFERED HELP IN DIFFERENT WAYS AND CONSIDERED HER.

⭕️ URGENT ‐ this is her last week ‼️
Sweet Rosie needs a loving forever home by this weekend as sadly her pound time is nearly up. Her pound team really would love for a family to ▪︎choose her▪︎ and give her the life she deserves. Please consider her.

Enquire to Taupō District Adopt a Dog or just pop into the pound between 12pm-2pm to meet her. 131 Centennial Drive, Taupō.

Meet our girl Rosie! 🐶

Rosie is a very energetic girl, who we believe to be around 1 year old. She is a heading dog cross 🐾

Rosie is looking for a home to keep her busy and teach her lots of commands. She is a very intelligent and sweet girl 💜

Open hours:

Monday - Friday 12pm - 2pm.

Otherwise open by prior appointment, by calling 07 376 0899.

Location:

131 Centennial Drive, Taupō (next door to Taupō SPCA; access is via Delany Drive).

Before you adopt a friend for life, we need:

- To check your property. One of our officers will make sure it is suitable for keeping a dog. This can be done online. Just ask us for more information on how to start this process.

- An adoption fee of $110. Every dog will come registered and microchipped when adopted.

- A completed adoption form

https://online.taupo.govt.nz/online-services/new/adopt-a-dog/step/1

Things to consider:

- We rehome dogs that have been unclaimed or surrendered. This means we don't know their past and have limited knowledge regarding their age, breeding and previous lifestyle.

- While every dog is given a behavioural assessment before being placed up for adoption. Please be aware that this assessment is done within a Pound environment. Taupo District Council can not guarantee how the dog will react to different environments.

BEWARE - LILIES CAN KILL!
At this time of year all types of lilies become quite common in many homes. Lilies of genera Lilium and Hemerocallis (day lilies) have been shown to cause nephrotoxicity in cats.

Cats have been shown to be extremely sensitive to the toxic effects of lilies. As little as 2 leaves or part of a single flower have resulted in deaths. It should be pointed out that the whole plant-petals, stamen, leaves, and pollen are toxic. The exact toxic dose and the precise toxins responsible for renal damage are currently unknown.

The quick onset of clinical signs suggests a rapid absorption rate of the toxin. The renal tubular epithelium appears to be the target of the toxin. Studies indicate that it is the water-soluble fraction of the lily that is nephrotoxic.

In cats, clinical signs of lily intoxication include salivation, vomiting, anorexia, and depression. Polyuric renal failure leads to dehydration and anuric renal failure and death results. No tests to detect lily ingestion are currently available.

Successful treatment includes initiation of fluid diuresis before the onset of anuric renal failure. Once anuria develops, peritoneal dialysis or hemodialysis is the only potential treatment. Differential diagnoses of lily poisoning include any potential cause of acute renal failure in a cat. Prognosis is excellent if fluid diuresis is started before anuric renal failure has developed.

Please remind your clients to be aware of these potentially toxic ornamental house plants.
