It’s our wonderful Louise’s 2nd pack-a-versary! So to celebrate we thought we’d do a little (long time coming) introduction post! Here’s what she had to say

My name is Louise, most people call me Lou and your dogs call me Woof.
Today is my 2 year anniversary at Pack Social so we thought it was time I finally introduced myself.

Picture this- July 2022, you’re unhappy in your office job, you quit with nowhere to go but you feel great for it, your best friend has not long bought a dog walking business and she asks you if you’d like to come on a walk and see what it’s all about.
The day is kind of sunny, the farm isn’t very muddy (Future me knows the mud that awaits me) and the dogs make you feel at home. You don’t have any experience but you do have a willingness to learn and an amazing teacher.
You start working there the following week.

Before joining Pack social I had little experience with dogs, I grew up around them and always loved dogs but I didn’t have any practice working with dogs. The passion and knowledge I have gained make me feel like part of me should have known this was where I was headed.
Over the last two years I have learnt so much from my peers, trainers and mostly, your dogs. There have been some huge but very welcome learning curves. They test me mentally and physically but I wouldn’t change it for the world.

I spent 10 years in retail and office admin before Pack Social, indoors, warm, dry and clean but now I spend every day being licked without consent, nudged for treats and pats, and splattered with mud and drool. But again, I wouldn’t change it for the world.

When I’m not hanging out with your dogs I can be found hanging out with my husband and our dog Ollie, baking, cake decorating, sewing or starting a new hobby on a whim.
I’m passionate about learning about dog behaviour and energy and anything that can help me be a better dog handler.

That’s the long and short of my story and I can’t thank you enough for trusting me with your dogs.

Tortured the Manners pack today with a nice on leash walk in the rain 🌧️ it’s not often we forgo paddock time before our walks and the amount of p**p we picked up was a great reminder as to why 😂 Everyone did so incredibly well and I’m very proud of them, but especially the handlers who stayed cheerful despite not being able to see through the rain 🚿

One of the biggest privileges we have in this job is to know and love so many beautiful dogs, on the flip side, one of the biggest downsides is to lose them. Unfortunately one of our family, Lula, lost her battle this weekend. In her short time with us she bought so much joy and laughter. We’ll miss our mischievous little Lula 💛 and our thoughts go out to her lovely family during this awful time. No one did mud baths quite like you, kiddo.

Hi! I’m Steph and this post has been a long time coming, so let me introduce myself!

I joined Pack Social as a handler in June 2021. In 2022 Gabby and her family decided to move to the far North, and my partner and I took over Pack Social. My first day as owner just so happened to be my first anniversary with the business and to celebrate a dog peed directly in my face (please don’t ask who or how, it was traumatic and I don’t want to talk about it 😂).

I first got involved with dogs in 2014 when I volunteered for a dog rescue. I was in my first year at university and I had time to spare. Looking back on it now, I should’ve known this was where my life was headed as I spent most of my spare time using my library access to read as many scientific articles about dog behaviour and training as I could. During my summers at university I worked in kennel-daycares which was definitely an experience and a half, and to be honest it put me off a lot.

In 2018 my boy Mystery, my first dog and reason for everything passed away. It had a big impact on me and conversely impacted my younger girl Xena, who was 2 at the time. She began to be reactive towards dogs, and a couple of months later began attempting to bite people. Thus we began our journey to learn how to fix our relationship and Xenas behaviour. It may sound odd but I’m thankful for this now. She gave me something to focus on during a really difficult period of my life, and I wouldn’t be where I am now if I didn’t have that experience.

In 2019 I left the rescue I had been volunteering for and started The Boxers and Bullies Charitable Trust with a friend. We still wanted to help dogs, but we wanted to do it on our own terms while still maintaining a balance with our own lives which was difficult in a large rescue organisation. Over this time, as it often does, my dog training hobby turned into a “jobby” as we began helping owners with reactive dogs, and taking obedience classes catered to reactive dogs.

This brings us full circle to 2021, I was unhappy in a dead end job. I had three dogs at home, I knew dogs made me happy, and I wanted to learn more to continue helping my own dogs and others. I messaged Gabby asking her to keep me in mind if she had any jobs going, and thankfully not long later she did! At times learning about dogs has felt like trying to learn a language without a translator, and other times like drinking from a fire hose. Through it all I’ve been surrounded by some incredible mentors that have only been happy to share their knowledge and experience.

Now it’s 2024, I have 6 dogs, I do something I love everyday, and I still love learning about dogs.

So who am I today, who walks your dogs? I love hiking and adventures with my dogs, we recently went on a three week trip of the South Island with 7 🙊 I love gardening and reading and DIY. I’m doing online courses to learn more and finding my feet in sports like agility. I’m passionate about mental health and wellness, particularly for those with trauma or who work with dogs as we’re so prone to compassion fatigue and burnout.

To those of you who’ve trusted me with your dogs along the way, I’m so so grateful, and I can’t wait to see where we go together next!

Last week on stories I asked if anyone wanted to see more of how we run our induction/training days, so for those who said yes, this is for you!

Now not every new or prospective client needs or gets an induction day, we do these for a variety of reasons, anxiety, reactivity, entire males, or those needing to brush up on their obedience are some of the reasons we do this. Giving an anxious dog or a dog with a behavioural issues the picture prior to them joining the packs helps set them up for success, and often they slot straight in easy peasy 🍋🪗

If you’re keen to get your dog in on an induction day, or if you have any questions, flick us a DM!

Woof!

Pack Social was established in January 2015, offering a customizable pick up/drop off exercise service that runs under the active supervision of professional dog trainers. Over the years we’ve grown and developed into something really special combining a massive passion for dogs along with our desire of helping owners fulfill the socialization, training and exercise needs that they sometimes struggle with. The end result is a service we’re really proud of and which our clients can attest to (two and four legged!). We service Titirangi, Green Bay, Glen Eden, Sunnyvale, Te Atatu South, Te Atatu Peninsula, parts of Henderson and parts of surrounding suburbs.

We’re based and operate our adventures on privately owned land located in the Waitakere ranges. Dogs are collected from their homes in our custom doggy shuttle and driven out for their fun filled day. Surrounded by native bush, our farm location is fully mesh dog fenced and boasts an expansive selection of paddocks, forestry and fresh water all for the dogs to run, socialise, swim and explore in for a minimum of 90-120 minutes per adventure. Being private land offers a safer alternative to other dog walking services that operate in public and means our dogs are protected from strange (sometimes unfriendly) other dogs, perfect for those who may not have 100% recall or could accidentally ingest something dangerous. Owners can feel safer knowing risks are minimalized and that their dogs are getting the best care available while having the time of their lives!

Puppies 4 months + are very welcome and benefit greatly from learning how to socialise appropriately with other dogs under our professional guidance and supervision. We don’t allow and bullying or picking on behavior so all dogs and puppies can feel safe and confident, socialising in the correct way with their new friends. Also if your dog is lacking in some areas of their training don’t hesitate to enquire, we may have spaces available in our re-socialising program which many of our existing clients have benefited greatly from.

Adventures are $50 per day for regular weekly clients and include the pick up and drop off to and from your place - you don’t have to be home, we’re happy to collect while you’re at work. Clients and their family are also added to our exclusive VIP Facebook group where they can enjoy seeing daily photos of all the fun.
