Halloween & Black Cats: Lucky or Not?
Reports indicate an increase in the adoption of black cats from animal shelters during October, even though black cats traditionally have low adoption rates. Why?
Black Cats:
While cats aren't inherently tied to Halloween's changing seasons, they have a long association with witches as "familiars," spirit attendants often depicted as cats assisting in witchcraft. This connection, combined with the belief that black cats are symbols of the devil, has perpetuated superstitions and folklore over the centuries.
Whether it is Lucky or Unlucky to see a black cat depends on where you are in the world!
In ancient Egypt they were considered to be divine symbols. However, in Greek mythology, they became associated with Hekate, the Greek Goddess of witchcraft and magic, who was thought to have a cat as a ‘familiar’.
- In the United States, black cats are often associated with evil and witchcraft.
- In China, they symbolise hard times and poverty.
- In parts of Europe, a black cat on a sick bed is seen as an omen of impending death.
- In the UK, a black cat crossing one's path is considered a sign of good fortune.
- In Japan, black cats are believed to improve one's love life.
- 19th-century pirates kept black cats on ships, thinking they brought luck.
You make your own luck
There is no evidence of black cats being unlucky, but such unfounded beliefs CAN negatively impact animal welfare.
Ensuring the safety of pets during festivals like Halloween is essential:
- Keep your pets safe at home when there's increased street activity.
- Ensure your pet wears proper identification, like a collar with tags and a microchip.
- Prevent them from consuming unsafe treats such as chocolate or sugar-free candies.
- Remember that pets may find costumes just as unsettling as we do.
Halloween is a time for family fun, and safeguarding your pets' welfare through these simple actions ensures there's no need for a lucky cat to cross your path!
We have merged LostPet.co.nz and the New Zealand Companion Animal Register. We have improved the search function and retained our map.
Listing your animal in LostPet, not just on social media, is important because your listing will always appear in your area, under their species, and on our map!
#LostPetNZ
LostPet should be the first place you list your missing animal, but we know Facebook is popular too. We have made it easier to share your listing on Facebook, but remember; social media has its drawbacks, so we recommend you list, for free, on our newly merged LostPet/NZCAR supersite first.
#LostPetNZ
Don't forget to check both lostpet.co.nz AND animalregister.co.nz for lost and found listings until the 30th of November. While we merge our LostPet service over to the NZCAR, animal listings may appear in either place.
#LostPetNZ
Microchipped pets are THREE TIMES more likely to make it home. Take a minute now to check that your details are up to date at www.animalregister.co.nz.
It is free to update your details. The NZCAR has microchip details for 1.2 million NZ pets. Are YOUR pets on there? Listing your pet's microchip is a quick and easy process, requiring only a one-time payment of $15.
From October 25th, LostPet.co.nz will be merged with the New Zealand Companion Animal Register, so it should be the FIRST place you go if you have lost or found a pet. #LostPetNZ
Making a listing on NZCAR/LostPet should be your first action after your pet goes missing. Creating a listing on LostPet is free. Anyone can share your listing from there.
Having a LostPet listing as your MAIN listing has several advantages:
1. The ability for guardians and other users to share listings straight to Facebook
2. When a guardian marks their pet as ‘lost’ from their NZCAR Registered pet, this takes the guardian to a prepopulated LostPet listing form (using their pet's NZCAR details)
3. Ability to print a flyer from their LostPet listing
4. When your pet comes home, simply removing your LostPet listing means you don't have to remember where else you have posted

Here are the last two questions in our Quiz! The most challenging question was question 5 regarding the NZCAR and Council. We share a regular post comparing the two - as we’re aware, they often get confused.
The main differences to note are that Council registration is mandatory and ONLY for dogs, while the NZCAR is voluntary but for ALL species, big and small. 🐤🐴🦎
