🍨🍦Speiseeis = Todesfalle!🍦🍨

This is a great read from a fellow breeder & Vet, Adriana from Little Frenchies on the Prairie on the DVL2 gene. Thank you for permission to share 🙏☺️

Happy Sunday Prairie Frenchie followers.

In light of my current litter, all with tails, I thought it pertinent to revisit why having a tail is so IMPORTANT to Frenchie spinal health.

The following information has been paraphrased from the page Just Healthier Bulldogs.....

The screw tail gene (aka DVL2) is the gene responsible for the cork screw tail in French and British Bulldogs, and Boston Terriers. It has been proven that this gene is the link to the presence of hemivertebrae in these breeds. The gene causes the tail vertebrae to be deformed (called hemivertebrae), which allows the tail to curl around on itself. Unfortunately, the deformed vertebrae are not limited to the tail, and can also occur anywhere along the entire spine, causing twists and instability.

It is widely accepted that vertebral abnormalities have an extremely high degree of heritability meaning that if the parents are affected, the offspring are very likely to be affected. In fact, up to 93.5% of French Bulldogs have been found to have vertebral abnormalities along the entire length of their spine. It is important to note that these vertebral abnormalities can vary in number and location, and there is no way to predict how pups will be affected. Some of these abnormalities in the spine will have little consequence to the health of the dog whilst others will have a severe impact resulting in pain, paralysis and even death.

Until recently, researchers believed that all Frenchies have 2 copies of the DVL2 gene (called homozygous). However, through genetic screening, a handful of dogs have been identified as having only a single copy (called heterozygous or carriers). This means that it is now possible to breed this gene out of the population. From recent research studies, there is a very high likelihood that the DVL2 gene also causes heritable heart defects and increases the degree of Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) through the morphological changes the gene causes on the skull.

So what does this all mean? It means that Frenchies with one or no copies of the DVL2 gene should have no hemivertebrae in their spine, although some will still have kinks in their tails. YES! They will have a fully functional tail! A normal spine also means a longer spine, so their body will be longer and should not have a roached appearance.

The Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) represents over 8500 veterinary members across Australia and has advocated for animal health and welfare since 1921.
The AVA maintains relationships with national, state and local levels of government, and provides advice on all aspects of animal health and welfare policy.
In December 2021, the AVA ratified their policy on Brachycephalic Dog Breeding. The policy among other things recommends genetic screening for DVL2 in all breeding French Bulldogs, British Bulldogs and Boston Terriers. Furthermore, it states dogs with DVL2 gene should be excluded from breeding programs. It may be only a matter of time before French Bulldogs are banned because of the inherent health problems they can suffer from.

A Frenchie with a tail may take some getting used to, but if it means they avoid potential spinal paralysis and death, then it should be a no brainer.

PLEASE CHECK NOSTRILS BEFORE YOU BUY A PUPPY
This is a really good read regarding nares (nostrils) in Frenchies
We are still seeing way to many Frenchies with stenotic nares.
I see comments saying how cute the snuffling, snoring, piglet noises are.
Let’s put a peg on our human nose see if that’s cute.
Also an interesting thing is the cartilage in the nose can collapse when they are around a year old, making them more pinched.
The single copy DVL2 seems to reduce/remove the likelihood of the collapsing of the cartilage making them breathe easily.
This is only a part of the BOA problem.
I’ve been through 2 boa surgeries with my first frenchie, it was pretty horrible and she still doesn’t have it easy.

Charli lucked out in the ear department (something we are working on, matching with smaller ears in future) but she is amazing health wise and personality and her humans just love her ears the way they are 🥰
