It’s a wrap-up for this breeding season! Derrynasagurt Silver has come home to Tir na nOg!
It was our first season standing Silver at stud and didn’t he live up to his reputation! Silver is a true gentleman to handle and has extremely fertile semen. Like last season over 80% of the mares he went to took first cycle. We love seeing all the photos of his foals on the ground already - they certainly exceed expectations.
We want to thank the team at Wai Eyre (Darryl, Lisa, Sandra and Nicole) for their professional service. This team is awesome! Always going over and above. They took exceptional care of Silver and even collected semen on Christmas Day.
To all the clients who bred to him this year - thank you! You have a good eye for a horse 😉. We really enjoyed the phone calls getting to know you and your mares. Silver has gone to some top-class blood this season - we are looking forward to seeing the new arrivals in the spring.
A massive thanks to Tracy Crossan, Kel Ross and Nicole Martin for the continued support and advice. You three have years of knowledge and experience in your professions and we appreciate the help.
Silver will spend the winter recharging his batteries with us at Woodbury. He has a stream, native trees and lots of birds in his paddock. If you are in the area, contact us for a tour.

Today at Tir na nOg we had a very special visitor, Sue Hargreaves. Sue is one of the pioneers for the early Irish Draught horse here in NZ. Sue was great friends with the legendary Thady Ryan, and had a huge involvement the the stallion Kingsway Diamond. We enjoyed hearing about the highs and lows of their breeding program, and the many top Irish Sports horses they produced. Meeting Sue is another important piece of the puzzle for us.

This is Tir na nOg Silver Dream. She is a pure bred Irish Draught yearling filly by Silver. Dream has the body type of a Warmblood and the temperament of a Draught. These Irish horses are a pleasure to train and be around. They are so forgiving you can make a mistake and start over without a setback. They also have great memory retention - teach them something new, give them some time off, and always pick up where you left it. I'm so pleased I came across this breed when I did, as these horses tick all the boxes.

This is a first for me, and what a great place to start. The Christchurch Heavy Horse Show. I'm with Knightscross Indica. She is a 4yo ShireX mare and already 17 hands tall. We really enjoyed ourselves on the day and loved seeing the other horses and equally enthusiastic owners. With a little more practice showing I will be ready for Dublin.

These photos of Trevalda Mountain Duke were taken just before his 3rd birthday. Duke is a very exciting young stallion for sports horse breeding in NZ, as he carries the best Irish Draught bloodlines the world can offer. We are looking forward to his first crop of foals out of Gisborne Telesun mares due this spring.

'The Enchanted Woodbury' is home for our horses and this weekend it was time to play! Love sharing these beautiful horses with people who adore them as much as we do. It's a much easier life for them here compared to doing the stock work on the hills in Gisborne.

At Tir na nOg we love being able to share our beautiful horses with “Horse crazy” girls such as these. As a trainer it’s great to see the interaction between them. It’s all about the energy! That’s why foals and kids do so well together.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Good news to share and finish the year on!

Ngahiwi TelePanikau is pregnant to Derrynasagurt Silver!
This is our 8th mare confirmed pregnant this season and definitely the most exciting for us. She was bred by Bruce Holden at Ngahiwi Station Gisborne, and is a combination of the old tough East Coast genetics. This mare is the epitome of the type of horse that made the Gisborne bred horse legendary. TelePanikau worked for many years as a stock horse on steep hill country and never once refused anything... She is a one in a million horse 🥰.
We are absolutely thrilled to cross her to an Irish Draught! These genetics are gifted to us by the prior responsible breeders who bred for soundness, temperament and ability. It's going to be a long and exciting wait for this one!

We have named these cuties just before Christmas. I’m with Rana’s foal called Tir na nOg Silver Pearl and Jess is with Friend’s foal called Tir na nOg Silver Gem. Enjoy the journey with us as they grow.

Today River left us to join his new owners in Timaru. River is a Shire X Telesun Gisborne bred yearling c**t. We bred to a Shire stallion to retain the fillies for future broodmares to go to an Irish Draught. All our young stock are well handled from birth. They lead, tie up, float and have their hooves trimmed. The best thing is River will be on my trimming run so I will remain a friend.
