Announcement: This post contains changes in our contact information, and it is important that you make the changes so that you can contact us in the future. David and I have had to make some difficult decisions and knowing that we can’t do wildlife rescue forever, we think it is time to semi-retire. Following is the plan and contact information.
For those of you who are interested in the happenings at For Heaven’s Sake Animal Rescue, here is a brief summary: After major trauma, including heartache and use of financial resources for attorney fees, regarding the unlawful killing of three fawn and an elk calf under our care, my decision is to cut way back on rehabilitation under the current leadership in WDFW. We will be rescuing and rehabilitating owls only this year. I applied to obtain a Scientific Collection Permit (now approved) which allows me to keep the owls in our education program and continue to do education programs in our community without the requirement to rehabilitate animals. However, my rehab permit is still valid. We are hoping for enough support to continue owl rehabilitation, maintain our education owls, and education programs. We are in high demand and have already scheduled programs in March.
Our web site will be changing to reflect our current services. The old e-mail address ([email protected]) is no longer valid. You may e-mail Claudia at [email protected] or David at [email protected]. Our land line will be removed on March 1, 2018. That number is 360-273-0550 and 360-273-0307. Please remove those numbers from your contact information. The new numbers are (Claudia) 360-701-5884 and (David) 360-701-0885. These are our cell phone numbers which will be used exclusively.
Our P.O. Box has been canceled. They will forward mail to us for a while but please use our current physical address which is 16111 Case Road S.W., Rochester, WA 98579 for all correspondence by mail.
We are very sorry for the inconvenience to our community who will have to take animals elsewhere but this decision could not be avoided. We have raised and released thousands of animals over the past years and have done so with integrity. We have always given quality care and raised the animals appropriately. The tragedy that happened here should not have happened. We are unable, emotionally, to live in fear of it happening again. You likely know that there is a lot to this behind the scene. It’s ongoing. We hope to see revisions in the laws as a result of rehabilitators and citizens demanding change. We appreciate all of your support past, present, and future. Again, thank you. We will move ahead with rehabilitating the State’s beautiful owls and educating the public about them. We are hoping to add some additional species to our education program. These would be owls who cannot survive on their own in the wild but could become education birds and live out their lives in a good environment with lots of attention and care.

Here is the 2nd email I sent to the Iowa legislative committee for DNR. It still amazes me how good I sound when I work on something for several days. Rage and swear words take up a lot of space!

Hi Again.
After imposing a continuous season on coyotes. Which in itself is abhorrent. Please take a minute to read some factual information.
"GRAY WOLVES.....BACK TO
YELLOWSTONE"
'"Gray wolves were reintroduced into Yellowstone National Park in 1995, resulting in a trophic cascade through the entire ecosystem. After the wolves were driven extinct in the region nearly 100 years ago, scientists began to fully understand their role in the food web as a keystone species....
New research shows that by reducing populations and thinning out weak and sick animals, wolves have a role in creating resilient elk herds.
It rebalanced elk and deer populations, allowing the willows and aspen to return to the landscape. The end to overgrazing stabilized riverbanks and rivers recovered and flowed in new directions.....
The reintroduction of gray wolves to Yellowstone National Park surely ranks, symbolically and ecologically, as one of the most important overt acts of wildlife conservation in the 20th century. Once again, Yellowstone harbors all native species of large carnivores - grizzly and black bears, mountain lions, and wolves...."'

Perhaps you could find a reason or 2 in this to support more biologically correct and humane regulations for all Iowa species.
Thank you
Sheli

As poor as we are..... our friend Jenni B is in the middle of a crisis caused by humans. Please help her and her Iowa Bird Rehabilitation crew.

Donations to Iowa Bird Rehabilitation go to food sources, temporary housing, medical costs, and travel for recovery and release. This is probably the most important aspect of running a non-profit...
