HOW TO CHANGE A PETโS DIET?
Greetings, furparents! Today, let's talk about the proper shifting of your pet's current diet to a new feed diet.
In general, eating the same diet regularly works well for both dogs and cats. Change is not necessary only for the sake of variety because, unlike people, pets rarely get bored with a single brand of pet food. Nonetheless, for the following reasons, diet adjustments could be required:
1. Diet is no longer available or is out of stock
2. The animal could need to adjust its food due to a medical problem.
3. The animal is now in a new stage of life (from a puppy to an adult or from an adult to a senior).
The most crucial part of changing a pet's food is to accomplish this gradually. A sudden change in diet can cause food intolerances or gastrointestinal distress in the form of vomiting or diarrhea, even if the only difference is in the meal's flavor or formulation (canned vs. dry).
A change in the food's composition, such as a shift in the new food's fat level, or exposure to new substances can both cause digestive discomfort. This happens frequently in dogs and cats, especially those that have a "sensitive" stomach or a history of digestive disorders.
For the first two days, gradually transition your pet to the new diet by thoroughly combining in a small portion (25%) of the new food with the old one. Keep an eye on your pet's appetite, behavior, and feces quality. If your pet tolerates the new diet well, you can gradually transition the diet by using the amounts in the figure below until they are only eating the new food.
DAY 1-2- 75% CURRENT DIET : 25% NEW DIET
DAY 3-4- 50% CURRENT DIET : 50% NEW DIET
DAY 5-6- 25% CURRENT DIET : 75% NEW DIET
DAY 7- 0% CURRENT DIET : 100% NEW DIET
In order to give your pet more time to adapt to the new food, you can try to extend the transition if they show signs of gastrointestinal discomfort. You can do this by making the shift even more gradually.
