A case of Demodectic and Sarcoptic Mange in a 3-year-old Shih-Tzu

Botchoi was brought for a skin check up due to severe pruritus, erythema, furunculosis, excorations and alopecia.

After microscopic examination, he was diagnosed with Sarcoptic mites which caused severe itching, allergic reactions and scabs & the other one was Demodectic mites which reside inside the hair follicles, it is associated in genetically predisposed or immunocompromised dogs. It can be localized or generalized both in juvenile and adult.

After 2 weeks of treatment, here is Botchoi’s before and after photos. 🩵💙

A**l Sac Rupture in 7 months old Shih Tzu

Amanda, a 7 month old female shih tzu was brought in our clinic with a primary concern regarding a wound on the butt. Her p**p was soft and she had poor appetite. Amanda was also lethargic and in pain.

Upon physical examination, she had a deep peria**l wound filled with maggots eating her flesh. Her wound is caused by ruptured a**l sac which is a consequence of soft stool for a long time.( A**l fluid is normally/regulary squeezed out together when defecating formed p**p).

We found out that she had a lot of hookworm, causing her to have diarrhea, followed by a**l sac impaction and rupture. Eventually, flies laid eggs on exposed wound. It only takes 24 hours for maggots to be hatched.

Amanda undergo secondary wound healing with the intensive wound cleaning, removing all maggots burrowed inside, and also undergo serial deworming to be free from intestinal parasite.

After 2 weeks of treatment, Amanda's butt is fully healed and her p**p is also formed. 😊

We encourage furparents to update your pets' deworming schedule atleast every 3 months to prevent multiple complications.

Thigh Wound Repair in 2-year old Female Dog

Sofia, a hyper indoor/outdoor dog who loves to escape was accidentally caught up in cyclone wire. Skin on left thigh was torn apart, measuring 15 cm, with seropurulent discharge and surgery is needed to repair it. Due to the location of wound with high tension, it makes the surgery more complicated and at risk of reopening.

Other cases of this kind of wound would normally need follow up repairs and it is fairly understandable considering the nature of dog where you can't stop them totally to use their leg while on recovery period. Each movement may contribute to skin and muscle tension that may break/loosen the stitches. The challenge is to make secure closure and suture technique that will hold the skin in position during healing.

Fortunately, in Sofia's case, she only undergone one time wound repair and the skin remarkably apposed completely after 14 days. She was brought back in the clinic once for draining due to fluid accumulation during the healing period.

Kudos to the owner who is supportive during the treatment and recovery period. Sofia was also spayed later on and happily roaming around. ☺️

Bilateral Perineal Hernia in a 6 year-old Male Cat

Snow, a male neutered, turkish longhaired cat, was brought in our clinic due to on and off constipation and decreased appetite. His butt was also swollen and he peed in small, frequent amounts. These issues had been going on for 2 years.

Upon physical examination, Snow was calm but gets aggressive when his butt is touched because of pain. The surrounding area of the a**s was bulging with palpable contents, and deviation of both lateral walls of re**um was noted. Urinary bladder was also missing inside the abdominal wall when palpated.

Perineal hernia was the primary tentative diagnosis for Snow. To confirm, x-ray was performed at Rebadulla Animal Care to check the placement of abdominal organs. Result showed displacement of urinary bladder from the abdomen into the perineal region.

Perineal hernia is a condition in which pelvic diaphragm is weakened resulting in protrusion of abdominal organs like urinary bladder, intestine, prostate gland and fats in the perineal region. The cause is not fully understood but it was commonly observed in middle-aged and older dogs and cats. Common contributing factors are straining, damaged to nerves of pelvic diaphragm, prostatic disease and hormonal imbalance.

Surgical intervention (Perineal Herniorrhaphy) is the treatment of choice for this case; wherein the viable herniated organs are pushed inside the abdomen, and the pelvic muscles are closed together to prevent recurrence. During procedure, his left hernial sac contained urinary bladder, meanwhile his right hernial sac contained abdominal fats.

Snow was confined here at the clinic until his incision wound was healed. He was also diagnosed with UTI with struvite crystals, secondary to herniation of urinary bladder. Snow had been eating soft diet and on medications throughout recovery period.

Now, snow is living happily without discomfort. He is way more active and gaining weight. A truly brave and strong cat overcoming his past painful condition. 😊

Congratulations, ALEX!🎉🥳🥰

Last November 2, Alex, who’s a full-term pregnant momma dog was brought to our clinic due to signs of labor. After few hours of monitoring, Alex had difficulty in whelping normally. So then, we decided to proceed on C-section and fortunately, all her five puppies were delivered alive and safe.🙌🙏🏻

Now, these bouncing puppers are back for their first deworming! 🐶🫶We are so excited to see them grow bigger and healthier. 💙😍

CYSTOTOMY IN 2 YEAR-OLD FEMALE DOG

Lychee was brought in our clinic primarily due to hematuria (blood in urine) for 1 year. She urinates frequently in small amount with prolonged straining. Upon physical examination, stone/urolith was immediately palpated inside her urinary bladder.

Radiographic imaging confirmed presence of single, big, compacted urinary bladder stone. CBC showed high level of infection, anemia; and low platelet count that could be a result of prolonged bleeding. Urinalysis showed that urine pH was elevated (8.5), urine specific gravity was normal, and with presence of cocci bacteria and struvite crystals.

UTI and poor diet are main factors for developing urinary stones. Lychee was on table food, and were also given frozen and canned human foods.

Cystotomy, a surgical procedure of opening the urinary bladder and removal of stone inside was performed in this case. It took about 3 weeks before hematuria was completely resolved. On her follow up laboratory tests, all of her blood and urine parameters were normal.

Today, Lychee was living more happily and comfortable. She gained more than 1kg postoperation. And to prevent stone recurrence, she has also completely shifted to dog food diet with boiled meat (w/out any seasoning/condiments).

PAPILLOMATOSIS IN DOG :
(The Transformation of Boki😍)

Boki was observed having a small growth under her right lower eyelid. As the weeks go by, the growth starts to enlarge and similar lesion was found on the other parts of her body. She got lesions on her eye, nose and ears but still spending her days happily.

Eventually, mouth lesions started to multiply rapidly until it covered her gums and buccal mucosa. Boki salivated a lot and cannot eat properly. She became lethargic and lost weight greatly.

Papillomatosis is a viral infection that causes small, benign tumors. It affects mainly young dogs with weak immune system. If left untreated, dogs will suffer with pain and malnutrition that will lead to death.

In the case of Boki, she had undergo 2 months of medication to control the infection and took immune boosters to strengthen her immunity.

Healthy and well functioning immune system will help your dog away from having this viral infection.

Scrotal Urethrostomy in 3 year-old Intact Male Dog

Chicko was brought to our clinic with a primary concern of swollen butt after taken bath in the river and with difficulty in defecation. Urine output was not monitored.

Upon physical examination, urinary bladder was severely distended, perineal region was inflamed and started to necrotize. However, urinary catheter cannot passed through the urethra, cystocentesis was performed. There was no significant findings in urine a**lysis.

X-ray was performed and revealed several urinary stones along the urethra. These stones were blocked inside the urethra and stopped the urine outflow.

In attempt of Chicko's body to urinate, urethra has torned off and formed 2 holes, leaking urine on butt muscles and skin. Urine contamination resulted the butt tissues to necrotize. Surgery is the treatment of choice for this case to prevent septicemia and correct urine flow. The dog was also already anemic.

Chicko was castrated and urethral tears were repaired. Urinary stones were removed and a new passage of urine was surgically made in the scrotal area. Necrotic tissues were removed and skin was stitched up.

However, due to high tension and wide area of dead tissues were gone in the butt area, multiple stitches did not hold up midway of healing. Fortunately, no follow-up surgery was needed and wound closed by second intention healing.

Now, Chicko's wound is fully healed and urination is normal. He only has follow up blood test to monitor treatment for anemia. But he is no longer in pain and looking forward for more years together with his family. 😍

Hooray to Parvo Survivors! 🥳🥳🥳🐕 😍

These puppies have bravely conquered the deadly disease called Parvo Viral Infection!
Parvo virus is highly contagious disease that commonly affects young dogs (up to 6 months) but it may also affect older dogs with weak immunity.

Two different households with multiple dogs was infected with Parvo. Casper and Sky were confined for 3 days, receiving IV fluid and injectable medications. Sky's siblings, Lano & Spotty, received subcutaneous treatment and continued oral medication at home. Casper's siblings, Chase & Chloe were not infected thankfully due to owner's early isolation.

Since Parvo virus does not have specific treatment, the key role is to address the symptoms which are vomiting and diarrhea (mostly bloody) and give them supportive medicine that will boost their immune system to help them fight the virus. Not all dogs may survive, but there is still hope when we try.

And here is the good part, updated vaccination in young dogs reduce the risk of getting Parvo viral infection. Now these dogs came back to receive their 1st 5in1 vaccine to prevent common viruses of dogs. As true as the old saying " Prevention is better than cure".💉💉💉

DADANG IS FINALLY GOING HOME!

Princess "Dadang Liit" has been staying with us after attacked by an Aspin × Labrador mixed dog. Surgical wound repair was performed after Dadang's health condition was stabilized. Owner opted for Dadang to be in our care until stitch removal. Dadang has entertained multiple clients during her stay 😅.
