One of the illnesses that puppies and dogs can be susceptible to is Canine Distemper Virus and this condition can be fatal. Puppies, mainly from 3-6 months of age can be most at risk.
This virus can be easily transmitted if a dog comes in contact with nasal discharge, f***s or urine from another dog infected with Canine Distemper. It could survive for long periods of time in a cool and damp environment. This means that if a dog infected with the virus could have contaminated the trail or area you go walking with your dog and he/she may come in contact with the virus.
The symptoms of Canine Distemper can range from high fever, eye and nose discharge, coughing, vomiting, and diarrhea.
We encourage everyone to have your puppies vaccinated as early as 8 weeks old to give protection they need. Keep your adult dogs up to date on their vaccines to help keep at bay if a breakout occurs in your area.
If you just adopted or rescued a new pet, ensure new pets are initially separated from existing pets in the household for approximately 7-10 days. Clean your surroundings also with appropriate disinfectants.
