Tom's true story:
It is a breed of cat known as the “Russian Blue.” The first recorded appearance of this breed was in 1875, which is characterized by its slate or bluish-silver color, and it is one of the
most expensive cat breeds in the world.

The first reason for choosing this particular type to embody the character of Tom is that Joseph Barbera was raising a cat in his house of the Russian Blue breed and his name was Tom.

Tom died while chasing a mouse inside a photo processing room, and in memory of his memory, he created the most famous cartoon character in history.. ❤️

This is a 1943 passport that was issued to U.S. coast guard and “Expert Mouser” Herman the cat.

The authentic passport was issued by the captain of port in Baltimore, Maryland. It also had a formal serial number of 05225058 and was signed with X’s and included Herman’s paw print at 8 months old.

Herman had unrestricted access to the port and the docked ships so that he could hunt down rodents to prevent the spread of diseases.

According to Paleogeneticist Dr. Eva Maria Geigl, “Ships are probably the predominant means of spreading of the cat. With humans, the rodents went on the ships and the cats followed. So, there was not a single ship, probably, that went out of the port without cats.”

The British Shorthair is a relatively powerful-looking large cat, having a broad chest, strong thick-set legs with rounded paws and a medium-length, blunt-tipped tail. The head is relatively large and rounded, with a short muzzle, broad cheeks (most noticeable in mature males, who tend to develop prominent jowls) and large round eyes that are deep coppery orange in the British Blue and otherwise vary in colour depending on the coat. Their large ears are broad and widely set.

The British Blue variant can often be confused with the grey Scottish Fold, a breed closely related to the British Shorthair. However, the Shorthair can be characterised by having its pointy triangle ears, whereas the Fold has softer, folded ears.

They are slow to mature in comparison with most cat breeds, reaching full physical development at approximately three years of age. Unusually among domestic cats they are a noticeably sexually dimorphic breed, with males averaging 9–17 lb (4.1–7.7 kg) and females 7–12 lb (3.2–5.4 kg).

British Shorthairs are an easygoing and dignified breed, not as active and playful as many, but sweet-natured and devoted to their owners, making them a favorite of animal trainers. They tend to be safe around other pets and children since they will tolerate a fair amount of physical interaction, but as a rule do not like to be picked up or carried. They require only minimal grooming and take well to being kept as indoor-only cats; however, they can be prone to obesity unless care is taken with their diet. They are quiet and vigilant, but if they trust their owners, they will silently follow the owners’ activities and stay with them. British Shorthair cats are not lap cats. They are more accustomed to staying beside people than squatting on people’s laps. Similarly, they prefer the feeling of having their feet on the ground. They have low voice and a moderate activity level. When there is no one at home, they will stay at home quietly and wait for their owners to come back.

Discovery of Felis Salamandra, a rare subspecies of wild cat

Scientists recently announced the discovery of a new subspecies of wild cat called Félis Salamandra. This subspecies is very rare as it is considered a subspecies of Asia's little leopard and is endemic to a tropical mountainous region. Lost in a valley hard to access which explains the late discovery.

This discovery is particularly interesting because it shows the importance of preserving biodiversity and protecting species at risk. Scientists are concerned about the declining numbers of wild cats around the world, particularly in Asia, where deforestation, hunting and illegal animal trade have led to a reduction in their natural habitats.

Felis Salamandra is a small feral cat with a black coat and yellow spots, similar to the Bengal cat. However, unlike the Bengal cat, this subspecies has unique features that set it apart from other wild cats, including longer claws and more sharp canines. The Felis Salamandra is also very agile and fast, making it a formidable predator in its natural habitat.
Arboricole, its prey is mainly birds as well as rodents.

Sadly, zoos are no longer allowed to house species taken from the wild, as this can contribute to the decline of wildlife populations. For this reason, scientists will select only a few feline farms sorted based on health criteria and experience on keeping primitive species. This will allow to keep some specimens of this rare subspecies safe and continue studies of their behavior and ecology.

In short, the discovery of Felis Salamandra is an important step forward for the scientific community and highlights the importance of biodiversity conservation and protecting endangered species. Scientists hope this discovery will lead to greater efforts to protect natural habitats of wild cats and other endangered species.
