Platy is a common name of freshwater fish. Both species are livebearers, similar to other fish of the family Poeciliidae, such as the guppy and molly. Platies are native to the east coast of Central America and southern Mexico.

The platy (Xiphophorus maculatus) grows to a maximum overall length of 7.0 cm (2.8 in). Sexual dimorphism is slight, the male's caudal fin being more pointed. The a**l fin of the male fish has evolved into a gonopodium, a stick-shaped organ used for reproduction. The female southern platyfish's a**l fin is fan-shaped.

Zebra danios are a favorite of freshwater fish hobbyists because of their ease of care. They are also prolific breeders and the easiest type of egglayers to breed. With its attractively striped, black and white zebra-patterned body, these fish are easy to recognize.

Zebrafish are very durable and can withstand an impressive range of water temperatures and conditions. They will generally do just fine without a water heater as they are comfortable at temperatures down to the low 60s F. Unlike most fish species, they are loyal to their breeding partner and mate for life.

It has long been observed⁠— though not scientifically⁠— that women seem to show a vague preference for men who are already spoken for.
