‼️PARVOVIRUS ALERT‼️
Be sure your dogs are protected!

🐾These puppies were presented to the clinic showing signs of anorexia, lethargy, vomiting and diarrhea. Turns out they are Parvo positive!

💡 Canine parvovirus (CPV) is a highly contagious virus that affects dogs' gastrointestinal tracts and is spread by direct dog-to-dog contact and contact with contaminated stool, environment, or people. The virus can also contaminate kennel surfaces, food and water bowls, collars and leashes, and the hands and clothing of people who handle infected dogs. The virus can affect all dogs, but unvaccinated dogs and puppies younger than four months old are the most at risk. Vaccination and good hygiene are the critical components of prevention.

Some of the signs of parvovirus include:
- lethargy
- loss of appetite
- abdominal pain and bloating
- fever or low body temperature (hypothermia)
- vomiting
- severe, often bloody, diarrhea.
Persistent vomiting and diarrhea can cause rapid dehydration, and damage to the intestines and immune system can cause septic shock.

If your puppy or dog shows any of these signs, you should contact your veterinarian immediately.

‼️This is one of the reasons why we recommend regular grooming for your dogs.

This patient was presented to us with severely matted fur resulting to a massive infected wound.

💡Matting is a condition in your dog's fur that is caused by dense tangles and knots. It's a painful condition that can lead to other health concerns such as infections or skin irritations and can also mask other health issues or parasites. Mats cut off the air flow in your dog's hair and can trap moisture, which can cause irritation and sores on your dog. In some circumstances, matting may be so severe that you would need to take your dog to a veterinarian for treatment.

We had to anesthetize this patient to remove the matted hair and to clean the wound as it is very painful for her. Antibiotic, pain relief, and wound antiseptic solution was given and prescribed.

🐾 Emergency cesarean section on a 3-yr old Beagle. Job well done Gucci! 👏

💡 A cesarean section, or C-section, is a major surgery performed to remove puppies from the uterus. This is most commonly performed as an emergency procedure when there is difficulty with natural birth. The goal is delivery of healthy, vigorous pups and provision of surgical anesthesia, appropriate analgesia, and rapid return to consciousness of the mother dog.

Cesarean sections result in higher survival rates for both mother and pups than lengthened and difficult labors. There is no other solution to relieve problems in pregnancy.

🐾 Leni was presented to the clinic with chief complaint of lethargy and enlarged abdomen.
Upon physical examination, it was found out that her belly is filled with fluids which was confirmed through abdominocentesis. Her condition is called Ascites.

💡 Ascites refers to the accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity, causing a distension of the abdomen.

This is a secondary condition of a more serious issue such as:
- Nephrotic syndrome
- Congestive heart failure
- Right heart failure
- Chronic liver failure
- Portal hypertension
- Kidney failure
- Malnutrition
- Hypoalbuminemia, or low albumin levels
- Lymphoma
- Peritonitis, or inflammation of the membranes lining the abdomen
- Hookworm infection, especially in young dogs

The general symptoms in dogs include:
- Distension of the abdomen due to fluid accumulation
- Lack of appetite
- Difficulty breathing
- Abdominal discomfort
- Abdominal pain

Laboratory test showed that Leni is heavily infested with hookworms and roundworms. Medications were prescribed to treat her condition and some fluids were drained to relieve her discomfort.

🐾 Our gorgeous patient named Shania visited today for her monthly Heartworm prevention 👏

💡Heartworm disease is a potentially fatal, but preventable, infection caused by a worm parasite, Dirofilaria immitis. The organism is transmitted by mosquitoes, which carry the heartworm larvae (called microfilariae) from an infected animal host to a new animal host. Once the larvae arrive in a new host, they grow into adult worms in several months and live in the blood vessels that serve the heart and lungs. In advanced infections, the heartworms enter the heart as well. Severe complications are possible when the number of worms present becomes high or when the heartworms die.

Heartworm preventives come in different forms, including monthly chewable pills and topical “spot on” medications, as well as an injectable medication that is given every 6 or 12 months. They are available only by prescription from veterinarians.

Heartworm preventives are safe, relatively inexpensive and easy to give, but if a dog becomes infected, heartworm treatment can be costly and difficult, requiring multiple veterinary visits and months of exercise restriction.
