🌟Essential oils🌟

With Christmas around the corner, we are aware that many people will be using essential oils around the home.

Essential oils are volatile, strongly scented oils derived from plant sources. There are many different types including tea tree oil, eucalyptus oil, turpentine oil and lavender oil.

These oils are a potential hazard for pets depending on the product, route of exposure and the oil itself. Any neat essential oil applied to the skin is a potential risk and is not recommended. Clinical signs can vary depending on the oil but can include:
- Drooling (particularly in cats)
- Vomiting
- Wobbly gait
- Tremors

In severe cases, there may be collapse, coma and seizures. Liver and kidney dysfunction may also occur.

Inhalation of these products (such as in oil burners) is unlikely to result in toxicity unless your pet is within an enclosed space for a significant length of time.
