My first time to attend a veterinary conference in Europe, and it did not disappoint! ICARE 2024, the 6th International Conference on Avian, Herpetological, Exotic Mammal, Zoo and Wildlife Medicine. One of my personal professional focuses this year is exotic animal medicine, and this conference was perfect for this. Just my luck that it happened to be in Belgium at a time I’m here for a personal visit. And such a beautiful location! Set inside old 13th century buildings that were originally built as an abbey and hospital, now perfectly preserved and used as a museum, music halls and art exhibits. Did you guys know that dogs can have heart problems just like people do? High blood pressure, dilated cardiomyopathy, congestive heart failure, degenerative mitral valve disease.. these are just some of the problems your dogs might be dealing with, especially as they get older. At the clinic we have actually been managing many patients with such problems already. Under the lead of doc Jun, we try to detect and diagnose cardiac problems as early as possible, using various diagnostic tools at our disposal. Listening to heart abnormalities via stethoscope, looking at the structure of the heart via x-ray, checking structure and function of the heart via 2D echo ultrasound, and checking heart function via electrocardiography (ECG) and cardiac blood markers.
Once heart disease is diagnosed, similar to humans, we put our patients on their maintenance medications too, in an effort to make their conditions more manageable and thereby trying to improve their quality of life as much as possible ❤️
So as your dogs get older, it’s a good thing to discuss with your vet the potential to develop heart disease, and what can be done to possibly detect it early enough so that the necessary management and monitoring can be started 😊

Jessy, a blue and gold Macaw, was brought to the clinic suffering from crop burn. The crop is a muscular pouch located on the front of a bird’s neck, above the top of the chest or sternum. It is an enlargement of the esophagus and serves as a storage place for food. In Jessy’s case, the crop burn had gotten so bad that there was actually a hole in the crop. Surgery was done to cut out all the necrotic tissue, and the hole was stitched closed. A few days after surgery, Jessy was feeding well again and sent home 😊

A reminder for everyone to be extra careful with small dogs! Luna, a mini pinscher, jumped from a height similar to a regular table and broke her leg.
The fracture was fixed with a stainless steel plate and screws, and thankfully she’s walking normally again 😊

Dentist for the day! Ozzy was brought in for a dental procedure today. He’d been suffering from a bad case of gingivitis, a lot of tartar and plaque build up and several bad teeth that needed to be extracted.
Also took the advantage of having him knocked out by neutering him as well!

Hamster surgery to start off 2023! 😁
Sawnie, a 2 year old female hamster, was brought to the clinic because the owner noticed her abdomen suddenly getting bigger.
Turned out she had polycystic disease, which causes hamsters to develop fluid-filled cysts in various organs. In Sawnie’s case, a cyst growing in her liver had gotten so big it was causing her whole abdomen to look huge!
Surgery was done to remove the cyst, and she was spayed as well. Surgery went well and she’s up and about again! 😊
