We have some sad news to share today - We will have to close Waggin Tails vet clinic for the foreseeable future.
As many of you know, we are trying to find ways to support DAS financially so we set up a private vet clinic to try and raise funds.
Unfortunately, we have been looking for vets to run this clinic but there is a real shortage of vets in the Philippines.
Pierre has been operating the clinic until now, but he will be going to part time hours in September in order to start working on building his own clinic.
Its impossible to run the clinic on just two days a week so we will continue to look for a vet and re-open when we find one.
Thank you to everyone who has used waggin tails! its been helpful as it has been covering some of our basic costs.
And a huge thank you to Doc Pierre who has been working non-stop to run waggin tails and also oversee the care of the shelter dogs.
Pierre has worked at DAS since September 2020 and has been paramount in getting DAS to where it is now. He will still be helping out but in a lesser capacity as he moves forward with his own plans.
You're the best Pierre! thank you for everything you have done for us - and hopefully will continue to do!

Tapeworms in Cats

If your cat is vomiting frequently, experiencing diarrhea or constipation, and losing weight despite having a normal appetite, your cat could have a worm infestation. If left untreated, tapeworms can cause anemia from loss of blood or a blockage.

You can look for evidence of worms by inspecting your cat’s f***s or checking the area around the a**s while your cat is resting. The worms look like grains of white rice. The good news is that a worm infestation is treatable, we would likely prescribe a course of deworming therapy and recommend you wash or replace your cat’s bedding to eliminate the presence of residual eggs that can lead to reinfestation.

Tapeworms are caused when your cat swallows a flea carrying worm larvae. If you think your cat has tapeworms or to prevent a recurrence, talk to us about flea control methods and treatments.

10 Amazing Facts About Dogs

We all know dogs have been ‘man’s best friend’ for thousands of years, but there’s loads more to our four-legged friends which makes them really amazing.

1. Their sense of smell is at least 40x better than ours

The area of cells in the brain that detect different smells is around 40 times larger in dogs than humans. This means that your dog can pick up on way more smells than we ever could. This is why dogs are often used to sniff out people, drugs and even money!

2. Some have such good noses they can sniff out medical problems

Yup, medical detection dogs are a thing. Because their sense of smell is so great, some dogs can be trained to sniff out medical conditions. They are used to diagnose a particular condition or to alert their owners if they need more medication. Some are even being trained to sniff out Covid-19!

3. Dogs can sniff at the same time as breathing

Dogs rely a lot on their sense of smell to find food, potential dangers, and friends, so needless to say they sniff a lot. Their noses are designed so smells can stay in their nose while air can move in and out of their lungs at the same time, which means they can breathe freely and still work out what that smell is!

4. Some dogs are incredible swimmers

So, not all dogs like water, but the ones that do tend to be pretty good swimmers (but again, not all are so always keep an eye on your dog in case they decide to take a dip out and about).

5. Some are fast and could even beat a cheetah!

Most dogs could easily outrun a human – they’re built to run and chase! The fastest breed of dog by far, though, is the Greyhound. These speedy sight hounds can reach a top speed of 45mph within seconds of starting to run.

6. Dogs don’t sweat like we do

While dogs do sweat, don’t expect them to be getting damp armpits any time soon. Where humans sweat watery liquid to cool down, dogs produce a pheromone laden oily substance that us humans can’t detect (dogs know it’s there because of that great sense of smell). The only place that dogs sweat like us is on their paws, so instead they pant to cool down. This is why it’s so important to keep your dog cool on those warmer days to make it easier on them.

7. Your dog could be left or right-pawed

There have been a few studies around this and it turns out that just like us, dogs have a preferred hand (well, paw) to lead with. You can find out whether your dog is left or right-pawed by giving them their favourite toy or interactive game and seeing which paw they use to help them first.

8. Along with their noses, their hearing is super sensitive

We all know dogs can hear much higher frequencies than us, but did you know they can also hear further? Generally, dogs can hear much softer sounds than we can, so they can hear things that are much further away.

This is another trait that makes them great search and rescue dogs. While they will mainly use their nose for tracking, their hearing can also be a real help (especially as they get closer to whatever they are looking for!).

9. Dogs have 18 muscles controlling their ears

If you have a dog, you might notice that their ears move around a lot. They actually have around 18 muscles responsible for moving their ears. These help them to change the direction of their ears slightly to hear noises around them better, and play a really big part in telling us how our dogs are feeling. A lot of a dog’s body language is expressed through what their ears are doing so a dog’s ears are vital in helping them communicate both with us and other dogs.

10. Dogs are about as intelligent as a two-year-old

Studies have shown that dogs can learn over 100 words and gestures, which puts their intelligence and understanding of us on a par with a two year old. However, dogs are much easier to train than a two year old! They’re used for all sorts of jobs, from military roles to assistance dogs, because they’re both clever and extremely loyal animals. So start training your puppy early!

7 Reasons Why Dog Obesity is Dangerous

Excess fat negatively impacts a dog's health and longevity. Obese dogs develop an increased risk for: many types of cancer, diabetes mellitus, heart disease, and hypertension, osteoarthritis and a faster degeneration of affected joints.

Pet lovers often take overweight or obese dogs casually. Yet these dogs are at a greater risk for a number of serious consequences. Here are 7 examples of such consequences.

1. Arthritis
Extra weight puts extra pressure on a dog’s joints. The cartilage in the joint deteriorates, which leads to arthritis. Sure, we can give pain medications, but weight loss helps significantly.

2. ACL
Too much weight is a well-known risk factor for tearing the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament), an important ligament in the knee. A torn ACL must be repaired with surgery.

3. Heart and breathing conditions
Weight gain can cause heart disease and high blood pressure. It’s also linked to breathing problems. Overweight dogs are more prone to a collapsing trachea and laryngeal paralysis. Untreated, these airway conditions could lead to a respiratory crisis which could be fatal if not treated.

4. Anesthesia risk
The heart and lungs of overweight and obese dogs have to work harder during anesthesia. The dog struggles to breathe because he has difficulty expanding his chest. Dogs often sleep too deeply or not deeply enough. In addition, overweight dogs may take a long time to wake up after anesthesia.

5. Tumors
Obesity may increase the risk of certain tumors such as benign fatty tumors (lipomas), as well as breast and bladder cancer (transitional cell carcinoma).

6. Skin diseases
Overweight dogs have extra skin folds, which can cause irritation and infection by bacteria. This can lead to scratching, body odor and skin redness. Overweight dogs often have an unhealthy looking coat because it’s harder, if not impossible, for them to groom effectively.

7. Quantity and quality of life
Obesity can take up to 2 years off the life of your dog! Quality of life is also lower. Carrying extra pounds around takes a toll; overweight dogs are slow to get down and up, they get winded or tired quickly and are less likely to play.

How can I keep my dog trim and healthy? Schedule an appointment with us so you can tailor a weight-loss program to your dog’s needs. There are no miracles to losing weight: eat less and exercise more. Eating less will involve sticking to a balanced weight-loss food. It’s also reasonable to cut down on treats and “people food.” However, it’s not considered ideal to cut down on the amount of food unless your veterinarian suggests it. Starving a pet is just as bad as overfeeding.

The other requirement for losing weight is more exercise. Fortunately, this is the good part! It involves more time having fun with your dog.

Overweight or obese dogs aren’t beyond saving. The situation can be corrected. We can provide you with the tools and the knowledge to help your dog live a long and happy life. You simply need to have the awareness and the motivation to act. Hopefully, having a happy and healthy dog is enough motivation.

If you have any questions or concerns contact us to ensure the health and well-being of your pets.
