𝐀 𝐇𝐎𝐏𝐏𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐒𝐔𝐂𝐂𝐄𝐒𝐒: 𝐁𝐄𝐋𝐈𝐄𝐕𝐄, 𝐀𝐂𝐇𝐈𝐄𝐕𝐄 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐒𝐔𝐂𝐂𝐄𝐄𝐃
The Tupi Rabbit Farmers Agriculture Cooperative (TRAFAGCO) is a testament that with perseverance and determination, success can be achieved even in the most unlikely of endeavors. It all started in July 2020, when a group of six rabbit breeders from the Municipality of Tupi decided to attend a pre-registration seminar of the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) to learn about the process of registering their group. After gaining knowledge on the procedures, TRAFAGCO was officially formed, with the goal of producing rabbits not as pets, but as a kind of meat that can be consumed.
At first, the cooperative was doubtful if they would have a market for their product. In the Philippines, rabbit meat is not commonly consumed as it is often viewed as a pet. However, the members believed in their product and decided to create something unique: Lechon Rabbit, also known as Rabbitchon. TRAFAGCO made sure to prioritize cleanliness and safety in their slaughter and roasting processes. To their surprise, their product received a positive response from curious customers who found the taste similar to other types of meat.
With the desire to continuously improve their product, TRAFAGCO attended various seminars and activities hosted by different agencies. They participated in DTI's OTOP ACT Session, Entrepreneurship Seminar, Skills Training Activity, and many more activities that helped them in their product development. Through hard work and dedication, the cooperative successfully registered with CDA in May 2022 with a total of 34 members.
As their group grew, TRAFAGCO expanded their product line to include Rabbit Chicharon, Rabbit Siomai, and Rabbit Lumpiang Shanghai. With the additional processed products, their market also widened, with deliveries now reaching South Cotabato, General Santos City, Davao City, and even BARMM. The DTI's Negosyo Serbisyo sa Barangay also provided them with a meat processing kit consisting of a meat grinder, sausage maker, knives, chopping board, and more. The cooperative also received a grant from the Department of Agriculture in January 2023.
Currently, TRAFAGCO is focusing on complying with the requirements for the License to Operate from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Their success story is a reminder that with determination, hard work, and continuous improvement, even the most unconventional ventures can thrive. The Tupi Rabbit Farmers Agriculture Cooperative is a prime example of how a group of individuals can come together, learn, and succeed as a team.
