The first deworming is an important step in ensuring your puppies stay healthy. Typically, puppies are dewormed at around 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks of age. It’s essential to keep them protected from parasites as they grow. #vetronanimalclinic
Pregnant Dog undergoing Ultrasound
A dog ultrasound during pregnancy is typically performed to confirm the pregnancy, estimate the number of puppies, and check for any potential complications. Here are some key points about dog pregnancy ultrasounds:
Best time for ultrasound: An ultrasound is usually performed between 25 to 35 days after mating. This is when the developing embryos are large enough to be detected, but it’s early enough to address any concerns.
Why not earlier?: Before 25 days, it can be difficult to see clear evidence of pregnancy, and after 35 days, the puppies’ bones may begin to mineralize, making X-rays more effective for counting puppies.
What an ultrasound shows
1. Heartbeat detection: By around day 25-28, the ultrasound can detect the puppies’ heartbeats, confirming that the pregnancy is viable.
2. Estimating puppy count: Although an ultrasound can show the presence of multiple fetuses, it’s not always accurate in determining the exact number. X-rays taken later in the pregnancy (around day 45) are usually more reliable for counting puppies.
Safety: Ultrasounds are safe and non-invasive for both the mother and the puppies.
Ultrasounds are a valuable tool in monitoring the health of a pregnant dog and ensuring everything is progressing normally.
Canine Heartworm
Heartworm is a serious and potentially fatal disease caused by a parasitic worm (*Dirofilaria immitis*) that primarily affects dogs but can also affect cats and other animals. It is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito, and the worms can live in the heart, lungs, and associated blood vessels, causing severe damage.
Symptoms of heartworm infection in pets may include:
- Coughing
- Fatigue after mild activity
- Weight loss
- Difficulty breathing
- Heart failure in severe cases
If you suspect your pet might have heartworm, it's essential to consult a veterinarian immediately. They will perform diagnostic tests, such as blood tests and possibly chest x-rays, to confirm the presence of heartworms. If your pet is diagnosed, treatment can be provided, although it can be complex, especially in advanced cases. Preventative medications are available and are highly recommended to protect pets from heartworm infection.
