Poecilotheria subfusca Pocock, 1895, also known as “Ivory ornamental” and sometimes wrongfully named as “Poecilotheria bara“, is a beautiful arboreal bird spider from Sri Lanka. Another species resembling Poecilotheria subfusca is known in the hobby as Poecilotheria sp. lowland. This one lives at lower altitude and grows remarkably larger than Poecilotheria subfusca highland. Where some suspect both are different forms of the same species, others believe the lowland-form is probably Poecilotheria bara as described by Chamberlin in 1917. In the world of science, however, logical explanations need proof and we firmly believe few scientists are working hard to solve this grey zone about the spp.. The Poecilotheria-genus is well-equiped with distinctive colors and patterns. Intriguing about the genus is their typical resting pose. With the first two leg pairs forward, the last two leg pairs backward and an angry look, they’re sending a clear message: “Don’t come too close!”

Tarantulas have very poor vision and the light will not harm them. It just makes them run for cover or stop their activities. Tarantulas cant see the red side of the spectrum so you can use as bright red led light as you can find or cover a normal flashlight lens with red tint.

Best known as the Mexican Golden Red Rump, Brachypelma Albiceps belongs to the Theraphosidae species of tarantulas. This spider is best known for its striking golden colored carapace and dark black abdomen. Unlike many other tarantulas, the abdomen of the Red Rump features red, urticating hairs. Since this color might change according to changing illumination, it can also appear grey, rose, or yellow. Another intriguing aspect of the Mexican Golden Red Rump is their relatively long lifespan. While the females live up to 15 years, the male counterparts manage to live about 5 to 6 years.

Tliltocatl albopilosus (previously Brachypelma albopilosum) is a species of tarantula, also known as the curlyhair tarantula.

The species' native range is Nicaragua and Costa Rica. They are terrestrial, opportunistic burrowing spiders.

This tarantula is covered in long bristles that have a characteristic curl to them giving them a unique look.

The curlyhair tarantula is a plump-bodied spider, covered with dark brown to black bristles that start light in coloration at a during juvenile years and darken as the tarantula ages. It has a golden-bronze sheen due to longer gold bristles that cover the whole body, which are particularly dense on the hind legs. In captivity both male and female specimens have grown to have a leg span of just over 6 inches, however, males live a shorter life at only 5 years in captivity opposed to females reportedly living up to 20 years. Males are often a lighter bronze color than females.

Commonly known as greenbottle blue tarantulas due to their metallic blue legs and blue-green carapace, they are very active and fast-growing tarantulas that are particularly attractive to hobbyists. They are native to the Paraguaná Peninsula, near Punto Fijo.

They live in webbed burrows under bushes and tree roots in desert areas of northern Venezuela. The entrance is often extended with webbing, sometimes resembling a funnel shape. These webs may protect the entrance from the harsh desert climate and act as a trap for insects.

Tarantula Care sheet #5
Your tarantula and molting
Molting is a process tarantulas go though as they grow. They shed off their old skin much like snakes. The entire molting process is a very difficult and strenuous experience for your pet spider.

A couple of weeks prior to molting your spider will most likely refuse to eat. You may also notice small clear droplets of fluid seeping from its leg joints. This phenomenon does not happen to all tarantulas, so do not be alarmed if you do or do not witness this. The spider may also lose hairs on its abdomen and will appear to have a bald spot.

Your tarantula will lie on its back and appear as if it is dead when it is ready to molt. There may also be webbing around the body.

If you look inside your pet’s cage and notice your spider on it’s back do not be alarmed. Just leave it be and do not disturb the spider. Disturbing your tarantula during the molting process could result in its death. The molting process can take anywhere from fifteen minutes to several hours.

Once your tarantula has emerged from its old skin, it will be extremely soft, tender and sensitive. If you handle your tarantula, do not do so for at least a week after it has molted.

Make sure the spider has fresh water do not attempt to feed your spider for at least three days after molting. A cricket can possibly harm or injure your tarantula if not enough time is given for your pet’s skin to harden.

One amazing thing associated with the molting process of tarantulas is the regeneration properties. If the spider is missing a leg it can be regenerated during the molting process. The new leg will usually be smaller and not as useable as the original.

We the Responsible One

Here to EDUCATE and not to generate HATE. Broaden the mindset of our fellow race. ‘I am not a teacher but an awakener. So, friends, every day do something that won’t compute…Give your approval to all you cannot understand…Ask the questions that have no answers. Put your faith in two inches of humus that will build under the trees every thousand years…Laugh. Be joyful though you have considered all the facts….Practice resurrection.
