Rabbits have become more popular as companion animals in recent times. There's a good reason for that! 🐰

Did you know that rabbits are gentle in nature and are capable of displaying affection? Many rabbits enjoy head rubs and can be generous with kisses too. 🥰 Domesticated rabbits, in particular, crave human companionship and can form strong bonds with their hoomans.

That's why it saddens us to see the growing industry for rabbit meat in our country. There is no need to add to the list of animals being slaughtered for food.

The handsome rabbit in this photo, Jeff Goldbun, is an adopted bunny who knows his name and comes when called. He is neutered and litter trained. Imagine that!

Through education, we hope that we can help put a stop to rabbit meat consumption. You can, too, by writing to the Bureau Of Animal Industry (BAI) through their emails 𝗱𝗮.𝗯𝗮𝗶.𝗮𝗵𝘄𝗱@𝗴𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺 and 𝗮𝗵𝘄𝗱@𝗯𝗮𝗶.𝗴𝗼𝘃.𝗽𝗵 to report inhumane rabbit farming conditions or to petition to put a stop to rabbit farming.

NOTE:

When PAWS lobbied for the Animal Welfare Act, it was an imposed condition prior to the law’s approval for certain animals to be excluded from slaughter as the implementation would be under the Department of Agriculture (with the Bureau of ANIMAL INDUSTRY directly under it). The law cannot very well seek to abolish entire industries when it is the first step of a developing country such as ours towards humane legislation.

If PAWS had adopted an animal rights strategy and had gone for the “all or nothing” approach, the country will still have NO ANIMAL WELFARE ACT and no criminal cases can be filed against animal offenders because there would be no law.

Regardless of how people feel about animal welfare and animal rights, the fact remains: Lobbying under our laws is done on an animal welfare approach. The Animal Rights lobby which calls for abolition of the entire animal industries is, at present, not being entertained and there is no representation on an institutional level.

The difference between Animal Welfare (AW) and Animal Rights (AR) is a fundamental fact to be appreciated when viewing an Animal Welfare page.

In the same way that AR advocates do not like it when welfare approaches are suggested on an Animal Rights page, it is unproductive to keep arguing for Animal Rights on an Animal Welfare Page.

TLDR (Summary):

Animal rights = all animal use must be abolished. At present, cannot be legislated.

Animal welfare=seeks to improve the conditions of animals currently being used for food and other industries. Currently, being considered in many aspects of legislation in our country.

RABBIT NUTRITION 🐰

According to the USDA, every 3 ounces of rabbit meat has the following nutritional value:
•Calories: 147
•Total Fat: 3 g 4%
•Saturated Fat: 0.9 g 4%
•Polyunsaturated Fat: 0.6 g
•Monosaturated Fat: 0.8 g
•Cholesterol: 105 mg 35%
•Sodium: 38 g 1%
•Potassium: 292 mg 8%
•Total Carbohydrate: 0 g 0%
•Dietary Fiber: 0 g 0%
•Sugar: 0 g 0%
•Protein: 28 g 56%
•Vitamin A 0%
•Calcium 1%
•Vitamin D 0%
•Cobalamin 91%
•Vitamin C 0%
•Iron 22%
•Vitamin B6 15%
•Magnesium 6%

These percentage values are all based on a 2,000 calorie diet.
Because of rabbit meat’s classification as game meat, you may not know much about its health benefits. To fully understand the benefits of rabbit, it is helpful to compare its nutritional value to other meats, like chicken or beef. Rabbit has the highest percentage of digestible proteins compared to other meats while also having the lowest amount of fat. Despite the low amount of fat, rabbit is still rich in healthy fats like polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats. Domesticated rabbit meat also has fewer calories than chicken and has less cholesterol than any other commonly consumed meats, like beef, pork, and chicken.
