Atopic Dermatitis (AD) is second only to flea allergies as the most common cause of itching in dogs. Therefore, atopic dermatitis is inflammation of the skin that is caused by a genetic tendency toward abnormal immune reactions. In AD, the triggers for these reactions are often compounds associated with pollens, molds, insects, mites, and the dander of other animals that are absorbed through the skin. Once inside the body, the immune system of an allergic dog reacts with a cascade of antibodies, white blood cells, and other physiologic reactions that result in skin inflammation and itching.

📎Kennel cough is an all-encompassing term used to depict a multitude of highly contagious respiratory illnesses. Kennel cough, scientifically known as canine infectious tracheobronchitis, is easily spread from dog to dog through aerosol droplets, direct contact, or contact with contaminated surfaces like food and water bowls, toys, or kennel runs.

📎Kennel Cough itself is not fatal but in rare cases, the virus could lead to bronchopneumonia in puppies and chronic bronchitis in senior or immunocompromised dogs, so it is very important to get your dog checked if they have any of these symptoms:

❗️Coughing – very strong, often with a “honking” noise

EVR Vet-Options is heading north!

It has been two years since the National Gas Anesthesiology Lecture Caravan started. When the pandemic started in 2020, the hands-on training for students was also postponed.

But now, with the roll out of Covid vaccines and university doors opening, we bring great news!

To aspiring veterinarians of Isabela State University and Cagayan State University, the caravan is now back on track, and our first stop is North Luzon.

Still, safety first. But we'll see you all on September 14 and 15, 2022.

❕Leptospirosis bacterial disease is caused by pathogenic species of the genus Leptospira, which present with acute kidney and liver infection.

❕Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease, which means it can be spread from animals to people. Infection in people can cause flu-like symptoms and can cause liver or kidney disease.

❕The symptoms of leptospirosis in dogs can be non-specific and can include lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, jaundiced or yellow gums, and changes to their kidney and liver blood enzyme levels.

Canine parvovirus (CPV) is a highly contagious virus that commonly causes GI disease in young, unvaccinated dogs. Presenting signs include anorexia, lethargy, vomiting, and diarrhea, which is often hemorrhagic. Diagnosis is typically based on history, physical examination findings, and f***l antigen testing. Treatment is largely supportive on an inpatient or outpatient basis because specific therapies are not available.

⁉️ Is canine parvovirus airborne?
-No, canine parvo does not float around in the air. It lives in the gastrointestinal tract of dogs and combines with a contaminated dog’s f***s and vomit. Even if the f***s or vomit is washed away, the viral particles remain alive and well.

⁉️ Can be vaccinated dogs carry parvo?
-The act of vaccinating your dog does not make him a carrier of parvo. However, any dog or object that comes into contact with the shedding virus can be carrying parvo. Example: A vaccinated dog steps into a pile of f***s contaminated with parvo. The vaccinated dog does not catch parvo, but an unprotected dog could lick this dog’s contaminated paws and catch parvo.

⁉️ Can Cats Get Parvo from Dogs?
-Cats also have a type of parvovirus that causes a severe disease, known as feline panleukopenia.

⁉️ Can a Dog Get Parvovirus Twice?
-While not impossible, it is very unlikely that a dog that has recovered from canine parvovirus would get it again.

Immunity to parvovirus lasts for several years.

However, this does not mean that your dog does not need to be vaccinated against canine parvovirus if he or she has recovered from it in the past. Routine vaccinations should still be performed.

📎Most people with pets have heard of rabies. Most have even heard a few anecdotal stories about the disease. Most, thankfully, haven't had personal experience with rabies or seen firsthand how it affects pets and their owners. This informational piece examines rabies and the importance of rabies vaccinations.

💡What Is Rabies?
Rabies is a disease caused by a virus transmitted through the saliva of a rabid animal. A bite or scratch is enough to create an open wound where the virus gets in. Rabies also transmits from animals to humans. No one wants their dog to get sick with anything, especially if it's preventable with vaccinations.

❓How Rabies Affects Your Dog
It's important to know the signs of rabies in pets and even more so if you've not given your pet the rabies vaccine. If a rabid animal bites your dog, the disease will progress in stages. At first, you may notice your dog's temperament changes. As the disease continues to progress, your pet may become aggressive and display other strange behaviors. Rabies is almost always fatal in dogs and cats.

❓Can Cats Have Rabies?
Like dogs, cats can also contract rabies and transmit the disease to humans. Rabies symptoms in cats vary by the stage of the disease. Initially, you may notice a change in demeanor. Symptoms of the next stage include aggression, muscle spasms, drooling, and seizures. In the final stage, a cat may go into a coma. When cats die from the disease, it's usually due to respiratory failure.

💉The Best Treatment Is Prevention
Until you've seen an animal suffer from this unnecessary disease, it's hard to imagine. At Angeles Pet Care Center, we don't want to see any of our patients or their families go through such pain. The good news about rabies is the disease is preventable. We encourage you to start your puppy or kitten on their rabies vaccine program between 3 and 6 months of age. We give a booster at 1 year and then vaccinate every 1 year.

Deworming is an important preventive care regimen for reducing parasites (internal and external) & improving your pet's health.

This schedule is a widely accepted deworming schedule, but depending on your puppy or kitten's background, they may have different deworming needs. It is best to speak to your vet about when and how often to deworm them, & with what medication.

Adult dogs & cats should be dewormed every 3-4 months.

How and when should you feed your Dog?

🦴 Under 3 months of age: 5 times/day.
⠀
If you feed your puppy kibble, it is recommended to soak it in a bit of warm water, even though many puppies have no problem eating dry granules.

Make sure your pet has free access to an abundant amount of fresh water. Wash the water bowl and change the water in it 1-2 times a day.

🦴 3-4 months of age: 4 times/day.

Divide the daily food norm into 4 parts and give each one to your puppy at equal intervals (for example, 8 am – 11 am – 3pm – 7 pm – 10 pm).

🦴 4-6 months of age: you can transition to 3 times/day.

🦴 6 months+: 2 times/day.

Although an adult dog can also be fed 3 times/day, usually they are fed twice: half the daily norm in the morning and the other half – in the evening.

Dogs are no exception. Having a smell is completely normal. It is the result of life. However, different dogs smell differently, this also applies to intensity.

There are several possible reasons.

❗️ The skin accumulated grease, which produces the odor.

✅Solution: bath time.
Make sure to use high-quality products and train your dog to be bathed, so that they don’t get nervous. Stress also intensifies the smell.

❗️ Improper care. If a dog is not groomed (regularly brushed, or trimmed, in the case of wire-haired dogs), their undercoat starts accumulating moisture and smelling bad.
