House fires are among the most devastating disasters a family could face. While they are less likely to break out during storm season, it's a good idea to take this time to review our fire escape plan, particularly as it concerns our pets.
The American Red Cross provides the following tips for including pets in our fire escape plan:
1. Organize a separate disaster kit for your pet
This disaster kit should contain preserved food, water, medicine, bandages, p*e pads, and other pet-care essentials you might need in the case of emergencies.
2. Arrange a safe place for pets to stay if you need to leave home
You may also consider getting a trusted friend or family member to babysit your pets while you're gone!
3. When you practice your escape plan, practice taking your pets with you
Evacuation drills are easy enough when alone, but it's a good idea to practice taking your pet, especially if you have more than two. You don't want to strategize how to carry all your bags and pets in a crisis while it's happening!
4. Train your pet to come to you when you call
All pet owners know the struggle of calling for your pet, only for them to run even faster with whatever it is in their mouths. While a funny anecdote, it might make for a stressful evacuation!
5. Keep pets near entrances when away from home, or somewhere rescuers can easily find them
This gives your pet a better chance of escaping and saves time for rescuers trying to locate them.
6. Consider attaching a '(number) Pets Inside House' sticker to your window
Doing so alerts rescuers that pets may have been left inside and need rescuing. This is especially helpful if you are away from home.
If owners know it's not possible to carry their pets or go back to rescue them, then as a last resort, they 𝙢𝙪𝙨𝙩 release any pets from leashes or cages to give them a chance to escape.
No one likes thinking of disasters, but this Fire Safety Day, we encourage owners to take the necessary precautions that could protect their pets from house fires.
