ONLINE PUPPY SCAMS DURING THE PANDEMIC & CHRISTMAS SEASON

The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically increased demand for pets as people seek adding a pet to the family to ease the loneliness and tension of prolonged time at home. Many feel that they now have more time to train a puppy. With this rising demand has come a spike in pet scams, in which an online search ends with a would-be pet owner paying hundreds of dollars or more to purchase a pet that ultimately doesn’t exist. Better Business Bureau (BBB) advises extreme caution when shopping for a pet online, especially in light of scammers’ evolving tactics.
The pandemic has given scammers a new tool in their arsenal. Scam Tracker reports show that many fraudsters are telling would-be pet owners they cannot meet the animals before sending money.
With the increase in scam activity has come an evolution in tactics. Scam Tracker data indicates that mobile payment apps are often used now, whereas credit card transactions, bank deposits, Western Union or money transfer companies were popular payment methods documented in the study. In addition, pet scammers now commonly use online advertising tools such as sponsored links to boost their fraudulent listings in search results.
Recommendations for buying pets online:
• See the pet in person before paying any money. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, consider a video call with the seller so you can see the seller and the actual pet for sale. Since scammers are not likely to comply with the request, this may help avoid a scam.
• Do a reverse image search of the photo of the pet and search for a distinctive phrase in the description.
• Do research to get a sense of a fair price for the breed you are considering. Think twice if someone advertises a purebred dog for free or at a deeply discounted price … it could be a fraudulent offer.

IMPORT PERMIT VALIDITY - NEW ZEALAND

To try to help alleviate the difficulties involved with preparing and transporting cats and dogs to New Zealand, all import permits received from 16 November 2020 will be valid for a period of 6 months or up to the date the rabies requirements are no longer considered valid.

Example:
Rabies vaccination date: 23 January 2020
Rabies titre date: 23 February 2020
Permit issued on: 16 November 2020
Date of entry into quarantine: 4 January 2021
Permit valid until: 23 January 2021 (rabies vaccination must be given in the 12 months prior to shipment).
We have also previously put a number of other temporary measures in place:
Import permits

1. All import permits include the following in the Special Conditions section:
* A 10-day extension to tests and treatments (except the final examination in the two days of shipment. For example, a sample for a test that needs to be taken in the 16 days of shipment, can now be taken in the 26 days of shipment. The Australian Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment has been informed that this 10-day extension can also be applied to cats and dogs travelling from Australia to New Zealand without the extension being listed on an import permit.
* An equivalence to allow residency in any countries currently approved to export cats and dogs to New Zealand that are of at least equal health status.
Transit permits

1. Transit permits are valid for a period of 30 days (rather than two weeks) and the arrival and departure times of flights has been removed.
* Where flight availability is limited and when MPI is informed, the transit period may be more than 48 hours. A note will be added to the Special Conditions section of the transit permit to confirm this.

DOG CARRIER TRAINING TIPS:

Shipping your dog to another country ? That is, until your excitement is met with frustration as you try to coax your pet into her dog carrier. No matter how hard you try, your dog might bolt at the sight of her carrier. Or maybe she hesitantly makes her way in, but spends the whole trip crying. Sound familiar? The good news is that shipping your dog does not have to be a stressful experience—for you or her! The key is to buy the pet carrier at least 4 weeks prior to moving date and teach your dog to love her carrier, no matter the circumstances.

Waiting until your Pet Mover is ready to pickup your dog as it would be a bad time to introduce your dog to her carrier, especially if in the past, it was only used for negative experiences.

Dog parents are encourage to create positive associations between dogs and their crates. “The crate needs to represent a fun, enjoyable and safe space—a place she can call home.” A couple of great options for pet travel are the Petmate Navigator Plastic Kennel or the Petmate Soft Sided Pet Kennel Cab & Carrier.

Here are some tips to make sure your dog slowly, but surely, begins to find comfort in her dog carrier, making traveling with your dog an enjoyable experience for all.

Get rid of the negative association. When preparing for pet travel, you first want to make sure that you get rid of any negative association that might be tied to dog carriers. If in the past you have only used the dog carrier to go to the vet (or somewhere else your dog fears), then it’s no surprise that your dog would automatically assume that instead of going on an exotic getaway, she’s about to get sent to the cold vet’s office!

Keep it out and around, available for them to spend time in it—at least until they have that positive association with it. You want to avoid taking it out to go somewhere unpleasant. Otherwise, the dog might create a negative association with it.” If you find your dog struggling to acclimate as you work on the positive reinforcement, don’t let her out at the first sign of crying. If your dog is whining for attention, wait until she calms down and is quiet before opening the door to let her out. You don’t want to inadvertently reinforce attention-seeking behaviors.”

Put treats and more inside the crate. Once you have slowly begun to eliminate the negative association, focus on strengthening the positive association that your dog is slowly beginning to attribute to her dog carrier. For example, take some time to feed her meals inside of her pet travel carrier. Leave it out and keep your eye on her. If you see her slowly make her way into it, reward her with her favorite dog treats! Or make sure to keep some of her favorite toys waiting for her in her carrier. Another tip Mayer recommends is to “have your dog in a crate next to you while you watch a movie, read, or are working on the computer. Remember to give the dog a chew bone or stuffed Kong, and drop treats in occasionally.” It won’t be long before your pooch gets excited for any upcoming pet travel you have planned!

Have dress rehearsals. Now that your dog has begun to replace that negative association with a positive one, the final step is to practice, practice, practice! Before leaving for your trip with your dog, slowly begin to take her on small adventures in her carrier, whether it’s to the park or for some quick errands. By this point, she shouldn’t automatically assume she is going straight to the vet. Although she may still be a little hesitant, continue to give her positive reinforcement to strengthen her understanding that it is a safe place for her. Mayer points out that “dogs should be relaxed before going in and not kept in there for any great lengths of time—unless traveling where this might be the only option. Double-check with the vet to determine the maximum time for your specific dog. Puppies need to be let out more often than older dogs. However, senior dogs might need to relieve themselves more often.”

Once you have rehearsed pet travel and have checked in with your vet, when the day finally arrives for the big trip, it should be easy sailing! Whether you’re flying or driving, be mindful of the time your dog spends inside her dog carrier to avoid any negative associations being relinked to the carrier. Lots of treats and love won’t hurt either! Whether you need an extra treat to ensure you pup stays calm or simply want to make sure she is as comfortable as possible with food and treats, these products will have you ready to go.

Bon voyage!

BENEFITS OF USING A PET SHIPPING EXPERTS.

Pet airline experts make traveling with your pet safe and easy.
Members of IPATA, the pet shipping experts™, are dedicated to the care and welfare of pets and animals during transport.

Pet shippers are the people who move your pet from point A to point B, work directly with the airlines and who apply their knowledge of flight regulations, flight container requirements, quarantine, boarding, import and export arrangements, health documentation and proper identification. These requirements frequently change, so it is important to work with a professional who is up-to-date with the changes.

"There are a lot of moving parts when it comes to shipping a pet and a professional shipper can take the stress off a pet owner and more importantly, the animal," says Derek Huntington, IPATA President. IPATA members focus on the pet's health and welfare and manage all details including crate suitability and training the animal for its crate; health preparation and documentation; and coordinating all logistics with the airlines. With an IPATA member, your pet is in good hands."Using a pet shipper, especially for international travel, can be invaluable to ensuring documentation is correct and all requirements are being met for the destination country," continues Huntington.

Pet Owners: Travel Info You Need To Know During the Coronavirus Pandemic

Since COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic, there has been an unprecedented number of flights cancelled around the globe. Many airlines have stopped carrying live animals completely and reduced operation to reflect less passenger traffic. More and more countries are closing their borders to foreign travelers. The situation is quickly evolving and travel options available one day may not be available the next.

Alliance International Movers Solutions (AIMS - Pettogo) and The International Pet and Animal Transportation Association (IPATA) strongly suggests all pet owners who are relocating or traveling with their pets wait, if that is an option.

Once airlines start accepting pets again, it is expected that there will be increased screenings and additional quarantines depending upon the destination. IPATA also recommends that pet owners begin planning future travel even earlier than the previously recommended six months, as government offices may be closed and that may potentially affect the permit applications. For the latest, up-to-date information on options for traveling with your pet, contact AIMS Pettogo who is an IPATA member as their global network of professional pet shippers is working with airlines around the world to monitor this fast-moving situation.

Keep safe.
