This is an othaematoma - or an aural haematoma.
It is an accumulation of blood within the ear flap

With an othaematoma, the ear will appear thick and feel spongy, like a large fluid-filled blister.
The swelling may involve the entire ear, or only a small area. 👂

What causes an aural haematoma?
Your pet's ear consists of cartilage sandwiched between two layers of skin. There are many blood vessels that run under the skin in that area. When something irritates the ear or ear canal, your pet will respond by scratching or shaking their head. Excessive or vigorous shaking causes one or more of those blood vessels to rupture, resulting in bleeding into the space between the ear cartilage and skin. 🐶

The best way to treat an othaematoma is to surgically open the area, allowing the blood or blood clots to be removed entirely from between the skin and cartilage.
A series of stitches are then placed through the ear flap, securing both skin layers to the cartilage. This stops any more accumulation of fluid in the area. 🩸

These sutures are removed after about days, allowing the wound and structures within the ear to heal.

An aural haematoma is quite painful and should be treated promptly. If left untreated, it will cause marked damage to the ear and surrounding tissues. 🩺 💚
