✨ Laser Therapy for Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) in a Canine Patient ✨

On May 18, 2024, Chan Chan (French Bulldog) was referred to our clinic with a suspected diagnosis of Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) received from another veterinary clinic on April 20, 2024. The Chan Chan's treatment history included prednisone, Synoquin, B-Complex, and enalapril. Despite these interventions, the patient continued to exhibit significant neurological deficits, including high blood pressure and abnormal gait.

During the initial visit, a thorough examination and diagnostic workup were performed. The blood pressure was noted to be high, but blood test results were within normal ranges. An X-ray revealed a distortion in the thoracic vertebrae, corroborating the suspected diagnosis of IVDD. The owner reported that Chan Chan could walk but was dragging its hind limbs, with the right hind limb occasionally bearing minimal weight. Doc Kai, her attending vet, observed the patient was bright, alert, and responsive, and euhydrated.

The neurological exam showed that Chan Chan's skin reflex was normal from the chest to the upper back but was missing from the lower back down. Both hind legs had normal withdrawal reflexes, meaning they responded to stimuli. However, the left hind leg didn't respond to being placed on the ground, while the right hind leg did. The reflexes in the tail area were also normal.

Based on the clinical signs and diagnostic findings, the suspected diagnosis of IVDD was reaffirmed.

Laser therapy was recommended as part of the treatment plan to address the neurological deficits and improve the Chan Chan's quality of life. Although twice-weekly sessions were suggested, the owner's schedule allowed for weekly treatments. The laser therapy protocol focused on the acute, light, lumbar, and thoracic regions.

Follow-Up Visit (May 25, 2024):
One week after initiating laser therapy, Chan Chan returned for a follow-up and significant improvements were observed. Her posture was better, and she could walk but still dragged the left hind leg. Her reflexes in both hind legs had improved. Reflexes in the lumbar spine area were better. Chan Chan could feel pain in both legs, indicating better nerve function.

After starting laser therapy, Chan Chan showed significant improvements in just one week. Its posture and reflexes improved, and it had better mobility. Laser therapy proved to be a helpful treatment, enhancing the Chan Chan's quality of life. Continued sessions and monitoring are recommended to maintain and further these positive results. This case shows the effectiveness of laser therapy for pets with similar cases.

Understanding and Preventing Dog or Cat Bites 🚫🐶

Today, we want to talk about a serious issue: dog bites.

Each year, countless preventable dog bites occur, affecting many lives, both human and canine. Understanding the cues that dogs give and educating our community can significantly reduce these incidents. Here’s what you need to know:

Why Do Dogs Bite?
👉🏻 Fear or Surprise: Dogs often bite when they feel threatened or are startled.
👉🏻 Protection: Dogs may bite to protect themselves, their puppies, or their owners.
👉🏻 Pain or Sickness: Even the gentlest dog can bite if they're in pain or ill.
👉🏻 Playing: Sometimes, dogs don’t understand their own strength during play.

Tips to Prevent Dog Bites:
✅ Educate Your Family: Teach children how to approach and interact with dogs properly. Always supervise interactions between dogs and young children.
✅ Socialize Your Pet: Well-socialized dogs are less likely to bite. Expose your dog to different people, animals, and environments in a controlled way.
✅ Understand Dog Behavior: Learn to recognize signs of anxiety or aggression in dogs. A tucked tail, raised hackles, or a growl are signals to back off.
✅ Regular Check-Ups: Ensure your dog is healthy and up-to-date on vaccinations by visiting us regularly. Pain can cause the friendliest dog to bite.

What to Do If a Bite Happens:
📌 Stay calm and secure the dog. Cage arrest them for observation.
📌 Clean the wound with soap and water.
📌 Seek immediate medical advice from HUMAN DOCTORS.
📌 Report the bite to your nearest local authorities (Region 1 Medical Center in Dagupan City, Urdaneta District Hospital in Urdaneta City)

Remember, prevention is the best cure! Let’s work together to create a safer community for everyone. AND PLEASE DO NOT FORGET TO UPDATE THE ANTI-RABIES SHOTS OF YOUR PETS. There are many channels whether private clinics or government departments that offers anti-rabies vaccine.

If you have any concerns or questions about your pet’s behavior or health, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Beating *45C Heat Index with Paws and Plays! 🔆

As temperatures rise, so does the risk of heatstroke in our beloved pets. At ZAC, we want to ensure that all pet parents are equipped with the knowledge and tools to keep their pets safe and cool. Here’s some vital information and fun DIY ideas!

Heat Stroke symptoms include:
❗️Excessive panting or difficulty breathing
❗️Increased heart rate
❗️Drooling
❗️Mild weakness, stupor, or even collapse

DIY Cooling Toys & Treats
🐶 Frozen Kong: Stuff a Kong with peanut butter (xylitol-free!) and freeze overnight for a satisfyingly cool treat.
🐱 Catnip Ice Surprise: Freeze a small toy or catnip in an ice cube tray covered with water. Your cat will love batting around the icy cube!
🍖 Treat-Infused Ice Blocks: Freeze chunks of pet-safe fruits or treats in water or unsalted broth for a refreshing snack.

For more summer safety tips, or if you suspect your pet might be suffering from heatstroke, please contact us immediately:

❕❗️Unveiling the Intricacies of Abdominal Enigma of Dogs❕ ❗️

In the realm of veterinary medicine, the intricate interplay of symptoms, diagnostics, and surgical interventions often unfolds in unique and challenging cases. A recent canine patient with heart disease presented an intriguing complaint of abdominal enlargement, prompting a comprehensive investigation that led to the discovery of multiple issues within the abdominal cavity.

The canine patient, a four-year-old female, initially sought medical attention due to abdominal enlargement, a symptom not typically associated with heart disease (which she has). X-rays, ultra*ound examinations, and blood tests were conducted to unravel the mystery lurking within. The imaging revealed abnormal sizes of organs, and an unknown mass propelling our vet to recommend an exploratory laparotomy to the owner.

👉🏻 Surgical Findings:
Upon opening the abdominal cavity, our veterinary surgeons were met with an unexpected sight - a 6.5-inch by 4-inch mass, which was exteriorized and removed from the right o***y. The mass exhibited a meaty consistency and contained greenish turbid fluid, indicative of a complex and potentially problematic situation. Further exploration revealed high vascularity of the uterus, which was suggestive of pyometra, necessitating immediate attention, thus performing routine spaying (removal of the uterus)to prevent future hormonal diseases.

The left o***y, fortunately, exhibited normal characteristics. Simultaneously, the spleen presented a formidable challenge as fibrosis had gripped almost half of the organ. Despite the absence of tumors, the spleen underwent splenectomy to alleviate the risk of complications.

👉🏻 Assessment of Other Organs:
Our surgical team meticulously evaluated other abdominal organs during the procedure. The liver displayed normal color and texture, while the gall bladder exhibited unremarkable findings. Both kidneys were free from tumors or cysts, and the urinary bladder maintained its structural integrity with a non-thickened wall. The gastrointestinal tract showcased normal structure and motility, providing a reassuring sign amid the complexity.

The absence of inflamed lymph nodes pointed towards a localized issue rather than a systemic problem. To ensure a thorough resolution, final lavage was performed to the abdominal cavity with antibiotics and warm saline. Subsequent suctioning removed any residual fluids, marking the completion of the intricate surgical procedure.

👉🏻 Conclusion:
The presented case underscores the importance of a multidimensional approach in veterinary medicine, where seemingly unrelated symptoms can lead to the discovery of complex conditions. In the face of canine heart disease, the abdominal enlargement served as a gateway to unraveling an amalgamation of issues, from ovarian abnormalities to splenic fibrosis.

Through the skillful ex*****on of an exploratory laparotomy, our vet team successfully addressed the various challenges within the abdominal cavity. The comprehensive evaluation of organs and subsequent surgical interventions not only relieved the immediate concerns but also paved the way for a healthier future for the four-legged patient. 🐶🥰

This case serves as a testament to the ever-evolving field of veterinary medicine, where each unique challenge provides an opportunity for learning, innovation, and ultimately, improved care for our beloved animal companions. ❤️

Your trust in our expertise allowed us to provide the best possible care and make informed decisions for the well-being of your cherished furbaby. Thank you for choosing our veterinary team!

We wish you longer, and more warm hugs with your family, Arya! 💕

Surgical Correction of Eyelid Entropion 🐶🏥

Entropion is an eye condition where the eyelid folds inward. This can cause discomfort, and may sometimes lead to eye infections or traumas, as the eyelashes continuously rub against the eye. It's often a genetic condition and is particularly prevalent in certain breeds, including Chow Chows.

Our furry friend here, started showing signs of discomfort, excessive tearing, and sensitivity to light - all tell-tale signs of Entropion. His loving family brought him to the clinic, trusting our team's expertise and commitment to animal health.

Our surgical team, led by Doc Vince, immediately got to work. After a thorough examination and confirming the diagnosis, and explaining everything about the procedure to the owner, we prepared our patient for surgery. The procedure involves carefully reshaping the eyelid to prevent it from rolling inward.

This case is a testament to the importance of regular check-ups and prompt attention to your pet's health issues. If your pet is showing any signs of discomfort or a change in behavior, don't hesitate to reach out. Our dedicated team at ZAC and ZAC is always ready to ensure your pet's health and happiness. 🐾💕

At ZAC, we're not just your go-to for dogs and cats – we're here for our feathered, scaled, and furry friends of all kinds! 🐾

Here is Pablo Escobar, a yellow, Indian Ringneck Parrot, brought to the clinic after the owner's cat accidentally bit Pablo. His attending vet, Doc Kai, thoroughly checked and cleaned his wounds. There were no apparent lacerations found but Pablo has contusions on the neck area and near his ears. His upper beak has a small cut, and mild inflammation on his periphery was also observed. Otherwise, Pablo Escobar was mobile, alert, and responsive.

Pablo Escobar was prescribed avian-specific antibiotics, pain medications, and supplements for his healing. The owner was also educated about proper husbandry and Pablo Escobar's wound care at home. 🦜💛

No matter how unique or unusual your pet may be, we're committed to offering them the best in veterinary care. Your pet's well-being is our passion!

2023 Veterinary Medicine Licensure Exam results
Only 9.34% passed

The licensure exam is the culmination of years of every veterinary doctor and their commitment and hard work. VLE is a test of both knowledge and resilience, a moment that separates the dreamers from the achievers.

This formidable challenge is a reminder that success is born from persistence, and VLE is just one more step on the path to becoming a licensed veterinary doctor.

With lots of determination and long preparation, every vet taker is ready to prove and take a leap towards a fulfilling career that they've worked SO HARD FOR.

Let this exam be a testament to the local breeders, illegal vaccine inducers, and anyone who disrespects their veterinarians. Being a licensed vet is not easy. The hours of study, sacrifices, and commitment that have brought them where they are right now, are not EASY.

Congratulations to our new passers! 🎉👏
