Here's how Kidlat braved the sea 🤣👏😃😱😀
Goodest Boy
Bait naman ni Kidlat namimigay ng pera! 😍🤣🤣
Dami nagsasabi ang ganda raw ng katawan ni Kidlat kasi siksik at ma-muscle. Bukod sa regular walks, dahil na rin sa mga ganitong exercises. Hehe! I'm trying to train him to be more aware of the use of his back legs and to strengthen them para easier for him to execute heelwork tricks and iwas injuries na rin. :)

Toothbrush Time
Progress Report: After just a few sessions of desensitizing Kidlat to being touched inside his mouth, I am now able to brush his teeth for short periods! Yay!
PS: Lol yung nag-totoothbrush sya while eating treats 😂😂😂 pero now dentastix na yung pinapakain ko kapag nagpapa-toothbrush sya 😂

Desensitization and Grooming
Sharing how I teach Kidlat to be comfortable in being touched and groomed. This session lasted 19 minutes, but I edited the video so that it doesn't take too long to watch. The key is to ask our dog's permission and listen to them every step of the way. Giving them the freedom and the choice to decide where to be touched and when to stop encourages them to work with instead of against us.
Backstory: Before working on this, Kidlat was super hyper and couldn't stay still. Ayaw nya rin ng hinahawakan ang paws nya, and he used to play bite when being touched. Doing this exercise consistently (after walk) helped him learn to be more relaxed.
You may find the video boring to watch, but I think that's the goal of setting our dogs up for success because grooming shouldn't be a stressful situation for both the dog and the owner.
If you have questions and suggestions, feel free to comment below! :)
Dine Out
Result of consistently teaching him that the only way to get what he wants is if he waits and stays calm. :)
PS: We thought we won't be able to bring Kidlat to restos/bars because he's very makulit and hyper, but training does really work.
Leave It
Kidlat likes asking for food when we're eating if he knows that he's allowed to have what we're having. Times like this is a good opportunity to train our dog instead of scolding them or shooing them away because they're motivated enough to get what they want.
Here, he wants to have some fries that I'm eating, so instead of just giving him some, we did a quick training of the "Leave It" cue. This is to teach him to refrain from getting anything that we dropped, especially food as this could cause some trouble when we dropped stuff he should't get (like pills, chocolates, etc) and he just goes for it. He did really well here because the food I was asking him to ignore was what he actually wanted, and he knows this cue already. I just made it more difficult.
I guess my point is we can train and teach stuff to our dogs everytime we interact with them. Even if we're busy, we can squeeze in a few minutes of teaching or strengthening a behavior they already know. :)
Hold Basket
Practice na raw sya for trick-or-treating! 😂
Training Tip: Vary the treats you use depending on value. High-value treats are your dog's faves, including real meat, hotdogs, ham, cheese, etc. and low value treats could be the ordinary dog food, biscuits, simple dog treats, etc.
Why? Because there are behaviors where you would need to motivate your dog more and there are instances when you need them to calm down and using high value treats might excite them too much.
For instance, when starting this training session, I was only using the simple dog treats that you buy from pet stores, but Kidlat couldn't focus because he wanted to play, chew, and run away with the basket. He would do the trick but then suddenly grab the basket and run away with it. This means that the basket is more valuable to him than the treats I was using. So, I changed my treats into biscuits with cheezwhiz, which is his favorite, and this allowed me to get his attention. Look how focused he is in the video just because I changed my reinforcer (treats).
Pogi!
Henlo! Patinyin din naman po ng mga pwetty at pogi furbabies nyo tuyad ko! Ehehe! ;)

Resource Guarding Prevention
Protective ba ang dog mo sa food or toys nya? Do they growl or snap kapag kukunin mo ang item na hawak nila?
Resource guarding ang tawag sa behavior na ito, at common ito sa kanila. Growling and snapping are their warning signs that you should back off to prevent you from taking whatever they have. It's natural for us to scold or say "no" to them kapag ginagawa nila ito kasi syempre gusto natin na makinig sila at sundin kung anu man ang gusto natin. Punishing these warning signs might stop them in that moment, but there's also a possibility that the next time someone tries to take away a valuable item, they will skip the warning signs and go straight into biting. Why? Kasi na-punish na sila before for growling and snapping. They figured that warning you doesn't work, so they will not do those anymore and instead, just bite to protect their possessions.
We can train them using positive reinforcement to avoid resource guarding. Through this method, ma-aassociate nila ang paglapit natin while they're eating/playing to something good and not a threat of taking something from them. You can do this by giving them a chew and then randomly coming up to them to give a treat. After eating the treat, ask them to go get whatever they're chewing. Mapapansin sa video ni Kidlat na after a few times of me just coming up and giving treats, automatic na nyang binibitiwan yung chew nya in anticipation of something good coming from me.
Just a few minutes of training this regularly will do wonders to your dog's behavior, so give it a try and see the results. :)
Happy training!
MYTH: Harnesses make dogs pull.
TRUTH: Dogs pull because we let them and they're not taught what to do instead of pulling.
Kidlat and I are still working on loose leash walking because he's an excitable dog, so he tends to want to get somewhere really fast, resulting in pulling. But he has improved a lot through consistent training. Walking like in the video wouldn't have been possible without training cues like "leash pressure," "let's go," "attention noise," and "leave it."
Yes, leash correction could work also (and the result is probably quicker because it forces the dog to listen to us), but I prefer to train Kidlat using Positive Reinforcement and Force-Free Method because I want to give him a choice to listen and go with me because he likes it and not because he's scared or forced to. This makes our walks less stressful for the both of us and strengthens our bond. :)
We will make videos of how I train Kidlat. If you're interested, follow this page and subscribe to our YouTube channel: Kidlat's Iskul Boopkul.
Happy Sunday, everyone! :)
Nail Trimming Exercise
Manyicure daw chabi ni mommie paya di matayas kuko!
Ayaw ku dati yan peyo nibudol ata aku ni mommie... 🤔🙄😂
Training Tip: Asking our dog's permission to have their nails trimmed is important. Giving them the choice to allow us to trim their nails and the freedom to decline will help us gain their trust. This took time for us kasi ayaw ni Kidlat dati sa nail trimmer. Pero every morning may short desensitization exercise kami. Hindi ko sya pinipilit kung ayaw nya, pwede syang umalis sa table. I wait for him to offer his paw and then reward. If ayaw nya, okay lang, try again next time. Slowly, I gained his trust na hindi naman sya masasaktan kaya naging madali na for him to let me clip his nails.

Ace Hardware Training
Quick training at Ace Hardware 😂 Kidlat tends to get excited in new places, at isa ang malls sa mga ito kaya when we got here, we did a bit of focus training.
Self-reminder din na all our interactions and outings with our dogs are teaching opportunities.
