Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

HEATSTROKE

I took my dog out for a walk today and he now seems to be overheated. What shall I do?

Heat stroke is a very serious condition.

It can occur surprisingly easily, on hot days with high humidity.

It is much more common in dogs that are overweight and have snub noses, such as pugs and bulldogs.

If the dog has heatstroke, then the priority is to reduce the body temperature.

This is done by putting the dog in water or splashing water onto the dog.

The next priority is to take the dog to a veterinarian as soon as possible, who can then monitor the temperature and place the dog on intravenous fluids.

Intravenous fluids are extremely important to try to cool the dog and maintain kidney function.

However if the dog’s core temperature was raised by too much, it can be impossible to save the dog’s life.

This cutie got neutered this week and he is here to share some important information with all the pet parents 🐾

🐕 Spaying and neutering your pets is crucial for their health and well-being.
Here’s why it’s so important:

- Prevent Pyometra in Females: Female dogs that are not spayed are at risk for pyometra, a serious and life-threatening infection of the uterus. Spaying your female pet eliminates this risk and contributes to a longer, healthier life.

-Behavioral Benefits: Spaying and neutering can lead to better behavior in pets, reducing aggression and the urge to roam, which can help keep them safe and closer to home. These behaviors, making your male dog calmer and less likely to get into trouble.

- Health Benefits: Spaying and neutering can prevent certain cancers and other health issues, contributing to a longer, healthier life for your furry friends.

To help our clients, we’re offering 50% off on spay and neuter surgeries at Pet Infirmary Veterinary Clinic-Narvacan IS and New Creation Animal Clinic-SFCLU during June and July minimum of 3pets!

Ready to schedule? Call or text us today to book your pet’s appointment and give them the best chance at a healthier future.

Toffee, a 4 years old cat with recurrent cystitis.

Patient had surgery-perineal urethrostomy 2 months ago at other facility but owner concern the problem didn’t resolved. 🥲

He was brought to our clinic for difficulty urination, hematuria, abdominal distension, and lethargy for days.

Initial diagnostic approach was done. Abdominal ultrasound reveals full urine-filled bladder, moderately thickened bladder wall with sediments floating, no visible stones. Urine analysis suggests infection and protein crystalluria.

Patient was admitted in our clinic for IV fluids and medication. For two days of treatment toffee is now discharge and continue take home medications.
Hoping for faster recovery.😌🙏🐱

Just like us, our furry pals can face health challenges when carrying excess weight. Obesity in pets isn't just a cosmetic concern; it can lead to a myriad of serious health issues. From joint problems to heart disease, and diabetes to respiratory issues, the impact of those extra pounds can be significant. 🚫

Here's why maintaining a healthy weight for our pets is so important:

- Joint Health: Excess weight puts added stress on your pet's joints, leading to conditions like arthritis and decreased mobility. Keeping them trim can help alleviate this discomfort and keep them bounding happily through life.
- Heart Health: Just as in humans, obesity in pets increases the risk of heart disease and hypertension. A healthy weight helps to keep their ticker in top shape, promoting a longer and happier life.
- Respiratory Issues: Extra weight can make it difficult for pets to breathe properly, leading to respiratory problems and decreased stamina. Maintaining a healthy weight ensures they can breathe easy and enjoy their daily activities.
- Diabetes Risk: Obesity is a significant risk factor for diabetes in pets. By managing their weight, we can reduce the likelihood of them developing this serious condition and ensure they enjoy a life free from its complications.
- Quality of Life: Above all, maintaining a healthy weight allows our pets to live their best lives. They'll have more energy, greater mobility, and a better overall quality of life when they're at a healthy weight.

So, how can we help our furry companions maintain a healthy weight? 🤔It's simple:

- Balanced Diet: Feed them a nutritious diet tailored to their specific needs, and avoid overfeeding or excessive treats.
- Regular Exercise: Engage them in regular physical activity appropriate for their age, breed, and health status.
- Routine Check-ups: Regular visits to the vet can help monitor their weight and catch any potential issues early on.

By taking these simple steps, we can ensure our pets stay happy, healthy, and by our side for years to come. Let's commit to helping them achieve and maintain a healthy weight – they'll thank us with endless cuddles and companionship! 🐾❤️

Have you ever heard of a luxating patella in dogs? 🐶 It's a common orthopedic issue that can affect dogs of all sizes and breeds, and here's what you need to know about it:

What is it?: A luxating patella, or "trick knee," occurs when the kneecap (patella) moves out of its normal position. This can range from occasional slipping to complete dislocation, causing discomfort and difficulty in movement.

Causes: While some dogs are born with a predisposition to luxating patellas, it can also develop due to injury, genetic factors, or as a result of certain breeds' anatomy.

Symptoms: Keep an eye out for signs like limping, skipping steps, or intermittent lameness. Your pup might also lick or chew at the affected leg.

Diagnosis: Your veterinarian will perform a physical exam and may recommend X-rays to confirm the diagnosis. They'll assess the severity of the condition to determine the best course of action.

If you suspect your pet may have a luxating patella or are concerned about their mobility, don't hesitate to consult your veterinarian. Early detection and appropriate management can help ensure your pup stays happy, healthy, and on the move!

Meet Dickie 🦎, the adorable leopard gecko with a history of Hypovitaminosis A now ready stealing hearts and spreading smiles when you visit our clinic. ❤️
Also known as a common leopard gecko (Eublepharis macularius) is a ground-dwelling gecko native to the rocky dry grassland and desert regions of Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, India, and Nepal. The leopard gecko has become a popular pet, and due to extensive captive breeding it is sometimes referred to as the first domesticated species of lizard but no lizards are actually domesticated.

A common presentation of hypovitaminosis A in leopard geckos is retained eye caps. This is actually a build up of skin cells overlying the eye itself. It is possible the eyes can develop corneal ulcers. Vision can be impaired due to the corneal scarring.
