Another case of feline urethral obstruction / blockage. Initial signs include difficulty in passing urine, straining and urinating outside the litter box as well as abdominal discomfort. Delayed systemic signs include loss of appetite, vomiting, lethargy and dehydration. This cat has not able to pass urine for almost 3 days. Under sedation, a urinary catheter was placed to be able to frush and draw out urine from the bladder. The catheter was kept in place for a few days while the cat was on iv fluids and medication. Causes of urinary obstruction include strictures, uroliths, sediments or crystals as well as urethral plugs; but in recent studies, most cases were found to be idiopathic (of unknown cause). Diet, infection or even stress from changes in routine can also contribute.
