It's the income, amigo!

AGRICULTURE IS NOT DYING,
BUT IMPORTATION HURTS IT!

Over the years, the problem of an aging farmer population and dying agriculture sector has elicited so many "brilliant" answers and solutions coming from bright minds who are products of top notch universities.

Here's my take: Can you hear out the farmers?

Puede bang magsasaka naman ang pakinggan nyo?

Simple lang naman ang solusyon at di na kailangan ng PhD.

Make farming (and fishing) profitable.

Here's how to make agriculture and fisheries profitable.

1. Government must guide farmers and fishermen by telling them what commodities are needed by the country. When I became Agriculture Secretary I directed DA officials to identify the imported commodities which could be produced locally;

2. Provide the basic infrastructure support like irrigation, farm to market roads and ice making facilities in the fishing grounds. Check this out: While still usable highways are excavated and cemented again, the backlog for farm to market roads is still 12,000 kilometers and while we have rich fishing grounds, there are no post-harvest facilities like ice makers, blast freezers or cold storage;

3. Give farmers and fishermen access to easy credit with very low interest and this could be done by establishing a real farmers bank. Stop the dole-outs, cash aids and subsidies. Offer a 2% interest on production loans and no-interest loans on equipment like tractors, solar irrigation pumps, medium size fishing boats or processing facilities;

4. Moderate the entry of imported commodities. Protect the farmers and fishermen from unfair competition by importers and assure them of a fair price for their produce. If they make a decent income from their labor, they will produce more. Remember: Profitability is the best motivation for productivity.

Itigil nyo na yang mga complex and sophisticated ideas nyo on how to convince the youth to go into farming.

Gawin nyo yang mga rekomendasyon na nasa taas because if you do, nobody will even leave the farms anymore to work in faraway and lonely places or spend a year on board a ship sailing through stormy seas.

Aside from that, the country will be building a resilient economy which will withstand a pandemic, a natural calamity or even a financial crisis.

Trivia muna tayo by: Sir Manok PinoyπŸ˜œπŸ“πŸ”πŸ”πŸ”

❀️

An iconic poultry breed which is now indigenous to the Southern Philippines but which was originally brought into the country by Arab missionaries in the 14th century, offers a bright hope for the revival of the dying backyard "native" chicken industry.

Variably called "Jolo" to refer to those coming out of Jolo, "Basilan" for those bred in Basilan Island or "Parawakan" for those bred in Maguindanao and Lanao Provinces, Mindanao's giant chicken are actually progenies of the breed called Aseels which came from Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and other East Asian countries.

They are kept as β€œprized possessions" by old Moro families who use them for a local sport where the roosters are fought in a naked heel bout which could last for hours. Roosters from the best fighting lines could fetch as much as P50,000 per head.

The roosters grow to as heavy as 3 to 6 kilos and are resistant to poultry diseases which often wipe out the local mongrel chicken like avian pest or New Castle Disease. The young ones could weigh 2 kilos at 6-months old.

I, Farm Boy!

Practical Lessons on Raising
Backyard Chicken Starts Aug. 3

Practical instructional videos on how to breed and raise Free-Range Backyard Chicken will be posted on this page starting tomorrow, Aug. 3.

Every Monday thereafter, lessons through instructional videos will be shared.

This is part of my personal advocacy to encourage rural families to raise at least a few heads for eggs and meat.

I was born during a period when almost every rural family had a few heads of chicken running around the farm.

Aside from the eggs which were just plucked out of the nests under the houses or in the barn, chickens were also the easily available source of protein for rural folks.

Those days are gone now and even rural families buy eggs produced by commercial layer farms and the chicken meat comes from old and culled layer hens.

It is my hope that by raising awareness on the benefits and profitability of having free-range chicken, families will once again embrace that old farming practice.

Raising backyard chicken could contribute to food security and reduce poverty in the countryside.

Tomorrow's lesson will be on the selection of eggs for hatching.

5. Tiyaking tama ang brooding temperature. Ito ay karaniwang nasa 30 to 33⁰ Celsius.
6. Tiyakin ang kalinisan ng brooding area.
