Recently, I have seen a news report that a dog was rushed to a vet clinic because its nose was bleeding. During the interview, the owner said it was probably due to the hot weather. However, nose bleeding in dogs can occur anytime of the day, regardless of weather or season. Some owners would also observe that the dogs are not feverish or still active despite the bleeding, but you should not take this condition lightly.
For first aid, you need to ๐๐ ๐๐๐ฅ๐ฆ and make your pet feel calm to minimize movement and to control heart rate and blood flow. You can do this by placing your dog in a cooler and quiet place while petting or hugging your dog. Then place an ๐ข๐๐ ๐ฉ๐๐๐ค ๐๐ง๐ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ on the bridge of their nose, do not raise their head to prevent asphyxiation. Do not give any medication at this point. ๐๐๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐ ๐ฏ๐๐ญ๐๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐๐ซ๐ข๐๐ง and, if possible, bring them to the vet clinic for diagnosis, treatment and prescription. Even if the bleeding stops, it can happen again if the main cause is not diagnosed and treated.

The vet would rule out if the condition is local or systemic. Local causes include foreign objects lodged in the nasal cavity, dental disease, mass, and physical trauma. Systemic causes include, but not limited to, ehrlichiosis, ingestion of rat poison, vasculitis, coagulation factor deficiency, disseminated intravascular clotting, drug-induced, and sequestration of platelets due to tumors.

๐๐ก๐ซ๐ฅ๐ข๐๐ก๐ข๐จ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ is a tick-borne disease that can affect any age, s*x, and breed of the dog but German Shepherd dogs and Siberian Huskies are most likely to develop more severe clinical signs. It will only require a single tick bite to have the infection. Even if you donโt see a tick it does not mean that your dog was not bitten, especially now that the climate is hot โ ๐ข๐ญ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ญ๐ข๐๐ค ๐ฌ๐๐๐ฌ๐จ๐ง! Remember: ticks are temporary external parasites; they come and go so you may not always see them! Hence, regular application of tick preventives are necessary.
If your dog is suspected to have ingested a rat poison, bring your pet to the vet clinic immediately. It is also best if you know ๐ฐ๐ก๐๐ญ ๐ค๐ข๐ง๐ ๐จ๐ ๐ซ๐๐ญ ๐๐๐ข๐ญ/๐ฉ๐จ๐ข๐ฌ๐จ๐ง your dog has ingested so that appropriate antidote will be given.
So the next time you see that your dogโs nose is bleeding, do not ignore it. It is never a normal and simple condition. If not treated immediately, your dog may need a blood transfusion due to excessive blood loss or your dog may never make it to the clinic.
