Tort trivia: What are scutes?

The scutes are the sections that form on the tortoise and turtle shells. The scutes are made of keratin and they do shed and regrow during shell renewal.

Swipe and see the different scute patterns of the hatchlings. Also see Fanta’s growth lines as he grows bigger. You can think of the growth lines as the rings on the inside of a tree trunk. 🐢
