URINARY TRACT INFECTION/URINARY OBSTRUCTION/CRYSTALLURIA

"MING", neutered male DSH cat was brought in the clinic for signs of stranguria (straining to urinate), and no urine for the past or more than 12h. Upon examination, his bladder was fully distended. Urinary catheter was immediately placed under sedation and extracted about more than 120ml of urine. Though the urine does not seem to have an obvious blood in it, it has sandy sediments and urinalysis showed high amounts of blood cells such as red blood cells and white blood cells (which can indicate infection). Struvite crystals were found under microscopy of the urine.

What causes struvite bladder stones?

In some cats, struvite bladder stones form because of a urinary tract infection. Certain species of urinary bacteria produce a chemical called urease, which leads to changes in urine acidity. Urease-producing bacteria can contribute to the formation of struvite stones.

In most cases, however, cats develop struvite stones in the absence of an infection. In these cases, the exact cause is unknown. Several different factors have been found to contribute to these stones, including the formation of concentrated urine, increased urine pH (alkaline urine), and increased levels of magnesium and phosphorus within the urine.

Vets may start on antibiotics and feeding a special diet.

If you noticed these signs, bring your cat immediately in the clinic. If left untreated, this blockage can result in life-threatening consequences such as dangerous electrolyte abnormalities, which can affect the heart and cause kidney failure and bladder rupture (tear)

💡Did you know that super glue is used in closing minor sterile wounds post surgery and small wounds to seal the cracks? However, when accidentally stepped on, or spilled on skin in large amounts, it may cause burn and scald in the area.

This particular case was when this dog stepped on a "cement glue" accidentally. This glue needs to be removed otherwise may pe*****te and cause more damage especially on areas where there were no fur such as in paws.

Removal of glue include topical anesthesia to lessen pain, petroleum jelly, and small amounts of acetone. He recovered fast enough and happily healed after a week of topical medications after.

BABESIOSIS in dogs

Babesiosis is a tick-borne infection due to Babesia protozoal parasites. Babesia invades mammalian red blood cells, causing anemia.

Acute babesiosis generally runs a course of ~1 week or less. The first clinical signs are lethargy, weakness, depression, and fever (frequently ≥ 41°C), which persist throughout, and these are accompanied later by inappetence, anemia, jaundice, and weight loss; hemoglobinemia and hemoglobinuria occur in the final stages.

Babesiosis primarily spreads through an infected tick's bite (multiple tick species can carry the disease). There is also evidence that some direct animal-to-animal transmission may occur, such as when an infected dog with oral lesions or abrasions bites another dog. This is particularly true for Babesia gibsoni, which primarily affects Pitbull Terriers. Recent studies show that Babesia may be transmitted to unborn puppies in their mother’s uterus. Dogs may also be inadvertently infected through a tainted blood transfusion. Dogs housed in kennel settings with poor tick control are at a higher risk for developing babesiosis.

TAPEWORM (Dipylidium caninum)

Several types of tapeworms are known to infect pets, but the most common species observed in cats and dogs is Dipylidium caninum.

Tapeworms are more common in environments that are heavily infested with fleas. Cats that hunt intermediate hosts such as rodents, birds, and rabbits are at risk for other types of tapeworms.

Usually, an infected cat’s owner will notice the presence of proglottids crawling on its f***s. A cat will occasionally scoot or drag its a**s across the ground or carpet due to the a**l irritation caused by the proglottids; however, this behavior is much more common in dogs than cats. Occasionally, a tapeworm will release its attachment in the intestines and migrate to the stomach. When this happens, the cat may vomit an adult tapeworm several inches in length.

Deworming and flea control are the cornerstone of the management and prevention of tapeworm infection.
