In light of Typhoon , PAWS urges all pet owners and animal lovers to ACT NOW to safeguard your pets and all animals through the storm.

• Please secure your pets and help all animals. Keep your pets indoors and away from harm. Help stray animals by temporarily sheltering them and providing ample food and water.

• Prepare your evacuation plan. Ensure it includes every family member—pets included. If there is an urgent need for evacuation, remember to be resourceful, such as by using common household items like basins and baskets, to safely transport your pets.

• If in the worst case scenario you absolutely cannot evacuate with your pets, PLEASE UNCAGE AND UNTIE THEM. Giving them the freedom to move can mean the difference between life and death.

Animals depend on us humans for their survival—let’s not fail them by extending our compassion and consideration in these difficult times.

𝐙𝐎𝐎𝐍𝐎𝐒𝐈𝐒 𝟏𝟎𝟏: Leptospirosis is a zoonotic (a disease that can be transmitted from animals to humans) bacterial disease wherein rodents are the common carriers, which is a serious concern, especially during the rainy season. The bacteria responsible for causing Leptospirosis are commonly found in soil and water, making infection more likely during periods of heavy rain when floods and standing water is prevalent.

Dogs are particularly susceptible to contracting Leptospirosis as they often come into contact with contaminated water. The bacteria can enter their system through cuts or abrasions on their skin, or by ingesting contaminated water. As pet owners, we must be aware of the risks associated with Leptospirosis and take necessary precautions to protect our furry friends.

Symptoms of Leptospirosis in dogs can vary, including fever, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and muscle pain. If left untreated, the disease can lead to more severe complications such as kidney failure and liver damage. Therefore, it is important to seek veterinary care immediately if you suspect your dog may be infected.

In addition to the health risks posed to our pets, people can become infected through contact with contaminated urine or water, making those who work closely with animals at a higher risk. Symptoms in humans can range from mild flu-like symptoms to more severe conditions such as liver or kidney failure.

To prevent the spread of Leptospirosis, it is crucial to take preventive measures such as vaccinating dogs against the disease, avoiding contact with standing water in high-risk areas, and practicing good hygiene habits. It is also important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of Leptospirosis in both dogs and humans, and seek medical attention promptly if necessary.

By staying informed and taking necessary precautions, we can help reduce the spread of Leptospirosis and keep our furry friends and family members safe.
