I have been asked a couple of times about the proper or standard appearance of the Peruvian breed. According to the ARBA Standard of Perfection 2021- 2025, “The Peruvian is a long-haired breed that has rosettes which create a frontal that falls forward over the head. As the hair grows, the Peruvian is exhibited with the coat parted in the middle. Solid body and long, dense, soft coat in balance with the frontal. All features of the coat must balance equally.”

To make it more visual, I’ve added some sketches to the photos of my Peruvian boar, Kobe. Look at the guided arrows from photos 1-4 to better appreciate the standard appearance of the Peruvian cavy. Please note that this has not achieved the proper length of a show cavy just yet. The photos below are only a guide in the selection process depending on your goal and reason for keeping them.

WHAT TO WATCH OUT?
Although rosettes and ridges are not subject to disqualification, the wrong placement of any might obstruct the overall appearance of the cavy, which might affect its coat length and density.

Photo 5 is also from page 304 of ARBA SOP 2021-2025, the ideal coat length and appearance for a show-type Peruvian.
