Milk Fever
Awareness Post: Milk Fever in Dogs 🐾
What is Milk Fever? Milk Fever, also known as Eclampsia, is a condition that affects nursing female dogs, typically within the first few weeks after giving birth. It occurs when there is a sudden drop in calcium levels in the blood, often due to the high demand for calcium during lactation.
Why Does It Happen? During lactation, a mother dog’s body needs extra calcium to produce milk. If she doesn’t have enough calcium reserves, it can lead to a condition called hypocalcemia (low blood calcium). This results in Milk Fever, which can be life-threatening if not treated promptly.
Symptoms of Milk Fever:
✅Muscle tremors or twitching
✅Seizures or fits
✅Restlessness or panting
✅Weakness or difficulty standing
✅Loss of appetite
✅Fever or elevated body temperature
✅Stiffness or a wobbly gait
If you suspect Milk Fever in your dog, don’t wait—contact your vet immediately. Early intervention is key to preventing serious complications and ensuring the health of both the mother and her puppies.
Stay vigilant, and give your fur mama the care and attention she needs during this important time! 🐶💖

EMERGENCY!
🚨EMERGENCY!🚨
Postpartum hypocalcemia is a critical condition that can occur due to the rapid loss of calcium during lactation. Nursing mothers require increased levels of calcium to support milk production, and if their diet does not provide enough calcium or if the mother's calcium reserves are depleted, hypocalcemia can develop.
Lily was presented in the clinic tonight with symptoms of restlessness, panting, weakness, difficulty standing, and seizure.
✅ Prompt veterinary intervention is essential to address hypocalcemia in dogs.
