Grab our last copy of The Cat Man of Aleppo in hardcover.

This book won a 2021 Caldecott Honor. The book is based on a true story of Mohammad Alaa Aljaleel, who in the midst of the Syrian Civil War courageously offered safe haven to Aleppo's abandoned cats.

Illustrated by YUKO SHIMIZU — a multi-award-winning Japanese illustrator based in New York City. Yuko is an instructor at The School of Visual Arts and has almost 20 years of experience illustrating.

Aleppo's city center no longer echoes with the rich, exciting sounds of copper-pot pounding and traditional sword sharpening. His neighborhood is empty--except for the many cats left behind.

Alaa loves Aleppo, but when war comes his neighbors flee to safety, leaving their many pets behind. Alaa decides to stay—he can make a difference by driving an ambulance, carrying the sick and wounded to safety. One day he hears hungry cats calling out to him on his way home. They are lonely and scared, just like him. He feeds and pets them to let them know they are loved. The next day more cats come, and then even more! There are too many for Alaa to take care of on his own. Alaa has a big heart, but he will need help from others if he wants to keep all of his new friends safe.

1. Something yummy. We like to pop in lots of yummy treats and pretend to be horrified that Santa would give so much treats to ruin your babies’ appetites!
2. A book or two. We just love reading books about dogs, cats, superheroes…you name it!
3. Some practical stuff. Collars, leashes, pet bowls. Uhhmm, dog vests? Cat wayfarers?

Did you know that you can read bedtime stories to your dogs? 📚
Reading brings a sense of awe, wonder and adventure to your kids. Dogs also love a good story and they are great listeners.

1. Pick a good time and place. Find a time when you have your dog’s attention. Choose a quiet and cozy area.
2. Get comfortable. Select a blanket or a quilt that is big enough for the both of you. Sit close to your dog. Use the same blanket every time you read together. The blanket will be your cue to that it is reading time.
3. Read to your dog and pet him while you read. Keep a calm and soothing tone. Reward him with a treat at the end of your reading session (unless he falls asleep as he listens to you read). 😅💕
