To molt or cast off their old external exoskeleton, crayfish need to withdraw from it. The process begins when they take in an excessive amount of water. At this point, their old shell expands and becomes loose at the 'neck'—the skin fold between the carapace (upper shell) and abdomen (lower section). It is better to isolate a newly molted crayfish in order to protect it from other crayfish.
