A breeder for quality is looking ahead long term, to physically and mentally improve the breed. A show enthusiast is looking for more immediate gratification. And "fashion" change in a breed - therefore loosing the essence of the breed type true to standard. You may see top dogs in the show ring that appear beautiful! A wonderful mover! But while within standard, has health problems, bad temperament, problematic bite and bad producer. Should not end up in the ring or be bred. Show organizers should create value by documenting the progress of the pedigree of the winning dogs to see now and then and which dogs make history. What is the point of dog shows? It is supposed to be a venue where breeders can make synergy with other breeders or enthusiasts. Given all the valuable feedback from members I am positive that eventually orginizers will change their direction to make dog shows more meaningful.

The backyard breeders and puppy mills on the other hand only care about the cash. And that's why the breed quality is deteriorating. True breeder do his homework. There is a lot to study and learn about genetics and health. You need to understand what you are doing.

Khaleesi earned 4th Best in Group from Judge Vicky Schneider (of Australia) in the Chow Chow Club, Philippines, Inc. event this weekend, 2024 June 8 to 9. The judge could not resist and included her in the group winners though they say she has gained weight. Her winning virtues among others include beautiful head with triangular vampy dark eyes, broad chest you can see when you are standing in front her, deep rib cage, round cat paws, correct hind legs and front, her set of tail is perfect, smooth and correct movement!

Khaleesi started her career in March 2024. She was awarded 4x the Certificat d'Aptitude au Championnat International de Beauté de la FCI. The only dogs which can be taken into consideration for the CACIB are those which have been awarded "EXCELLENT 1st". A CACIB can only be awarded if the dog in question has been assessed as being of superior quality

Many thanks to Sonny Evangelista for presenting Khaleesi.

Bull Terrier Show Handling tips:

Attention
One thing that top dog-handler teams have in common is that the handler is able to get and keep their dog’s attention. This requires a combination of training and effective use of bait.

Training: Catch and Watch are great commands to use

Bait: Know your dog, prepare with multiple escalation levels of bait, by this I mean you plan to use somethng your dog likes pretty well, but have something in reserve they are absolutely nuts about in case there are strong distractions while you are showing. This could be another dog that is disruptive or a handler using some kind of crazy toy as bait.

Distractions: Catch your dog BEFORE you completely lose control to distractions

fine chain which like the parachute cord, can be fit in that groove behind the skull.

Leads: Nylon can be matched to collars and is easily cleaned, and is easy to find in many sizes and variations. Leather and Resco material leads are easiest on your hands. Use a width appropriate to the amount of control you need to exert. Leads without snaps are great for they won’t come loose, and you won’t risk the snap swinging into the dog's eye when you are moving.

Examination: Stacking/Free Baiting
Train your dog to accept handling of mouth and private areas by many people. Train dog to accept being placed into position and held there, although you will not be expected to do this often in the specialty ring, all breed judges DO expect it, and it will help if you need to adjust a free stack without totally throwing the dog off. When hand stacking set up the side facing the judge FIRST!

Free stacking can be practiced at home by working to maneuver the dog with food and rewarding only when it gets into position. Raise your standards as the dog gets better at this, and work at increasing the distance between you.
Front legs should be placed with the toes lined up under the point of shoulder, parallel to each other, with toes pointing straight ahead.

Rear legs should line up with the rear pasterns perpendicular to the ground. Legs should be parallel to one another, toes straight ahead.

Head carriage: Experiment to find the best position the neck should be up and arched, but angle of the head may affect the appearance of the profile, practice in a mirror to find your dog' best (and worst!) angles.

Tail should be level with the line of the back but should be the last thing you worry about. Experiment to see if you can find something that always elicits tail up or a wag. Examples are saying a key word, having the dog step backwards, tickling in a certain place.

Markings: if your dog has head or back markings that affect its appearance, such as a white spot emphasizing a back roach or head marking that spoils the smooth profile, present the dog from the other side as much as possible (do not do this if the judge specifically requests you not to)

STANDARDS TO LOOK FOR TO GET A HEALTHY AND SOUND BULL TERRIER

So while no dog has 100% PERFECT structure, buying a dog from a breeder who takes great care in trying to make sure their dogs have the best structure possible as oppose to a breeder who does not care and breeds a poor structured dog to another poor structured dog to create dogs with chronic structure base issues should be avoided, even if they do simply claim to be
“pet breeders and not show breeders”
Good, sound structure is far MORE than just to win a ribbon, it is important to the health and well being of any dog
and a happy dog equals a happy family.

Many people assume that the standard is for nothing more then a beauty contest and in no way reflects on the “average dog” in any way. But those who think that could not be farther from the truth!
When these things become mis-aligned, it causes a domino effect and our body is unable to function the best to its abilities and in the worst case scenario cause many issues along the way.

Imagine in your head, a spine, surrounded by soft tissues all snug and straight, imagine it bends out of place, even slightly, it pushes against that soft tissue, that soft tissues reacts by swelling thus putting pressure on other parts surrounding it.

Everything in your body is contained, it does not have unlimited room to wiggle about or be misaligned it is like that for all living creatures.
Poor bone structure can cause things such as:

lethargy
inflammation and mild to severe pain
poor digestion
joint pain and joint dislocation-
depression
anxiety that causes your Bull Terrier act wildly as they should not be
lameness
