It's been 6 days since we and Wena lost Bruno.
We did everything we could to support her through her grief.
We made sure she spent time with his body so she could understand that he had died. Then we gave her lots of love and cuddles but didn't force her to do anything before she was ready
Today, she finally wanted to go out for a walk, and she seems to be regaining some of her old enthusiasm for life.
Dogs feel the same basic emotions as we do, including grief and sadness after a loss.
It's really important to allow a pet to say goodbye to their companions, animals, or human, so they don't think they have been abandoned.
What are your thoughts on this?
We get a lot of messages asking how to treat deep wounds. For the most severe cases we use manuka honey for the first few days. You can also use just ordinary brown sugar as Manuka is expensive. You can't use ordinary honey.
Two other options are mupirocin antibiotic cream or triple antibiotic cream, which we had brought from the USA as we haven't been able to get it here.
The miraculous recoveries you see, are all made possible from the system of wound management you see in the video. Nellie, Ezra, Huxley, all started with Manuka for the first week or two.
But brown sugar will also work, it may just take a little longer.
If there is a video you would like to see about treatment for different diseases or injuries, let us know in the comments
Running a shelter, we are constantly faced with tough decisions.
Here is one of them.
Gordon is a senior dog, at least 12 years old, who we rescued from the streets in March this year. In the last few months, a tumor started growing on the side of his head. He was checked by 4 different vets who all said both surgery and chemo were risky, so we decided to leave it to see what happened.
However, it grew rapidly and aggressively.
Without a deep tissue biopsy, we can't be certain exactly what it is, or what chemo to use. And chemo is rough on old dogs.
The mass is now rupturing and is causing him pain. It's only a matter of time before we would have to release him from his suffering.
With that prospect, we have decided to risk the surgery. There is a chance that he could make it.
We will do it under gas anaesthesia with Doc Gama at animal wellness, as gas is much safer than conventional anaesthesia.
The surgery will cost around 45,000 pesos (750 usd). We are not asking for funds for this as Gordon's sponsor will generously cover the costs.
But if you have anything to spare, we ask that you donate to our new shelter fundraiser so dogs like Gordon can live in much better conditions.
Currently we have no space to dedicate to special needs dogs or seniors. We just don't have the space.
Gordon lives under a table in our clinic. Far from ideal, we know.
Our new shelter will have a senior suites. A house solely for old dogs, where they can live out their years in peace and comfort.
Please consider a small donation to make this happen.

Update on Tippi.
We rescued Tippi four days ago and have been very worried about her. She was vomiting and pooping bone fragments, so we took her for x-rays and saw that she had foreign bodies in her stomach and colon.
Dogs like Tippi will eat absolutely anything just to survive. We have witnessed dogs vomit plastic bags. It's truly heartbreaking that an innocent soul has to endure such a harsh reality.
The damage that is done to internal organs from ingesting sharp bone fragments can be fatal, so we were considering surgery, but in Tippi's weakened state, that was also a risk.
Luckily, after the x-rays, she stopped vomiting and seems to be getting a little stronger.
We will take her for x-rays again tomorrow to see if her system is clear now.
Every day, we need to do wound management of her stump and also of the abrasions on her feet.
Thank you to everyone who donated for Tippi. And thank you Brandon and Molly, for sponsoring her.
Update on the sack puppies.
A week ago, staff found a sack of puppies dumped in the middle of the road. The sack had been tied so whoever had done it intended for them to die. It's quite unfathomable that someone could do this.
After we posted about them, someone contacted us to let us know that he had been feeding three of the puppies. But they were about a kilometer from where he was feeding them. His name is Mateusz and he's an amazing human being. He has been helping strays for a long time, treating skin conditions and helping to get stray puppies adopted.
For all the puppies he gets adopted, he pays for vaccinations, sterilisations and one year of medical treatment. And he doesn't get any recognition, he just does it because it's the right thing to do. He was about to bring these puppies to his home as he had just got some puppies adopted.
He is going to take the three that he fed and find them homes. It's interesting that he didn't recognize the other three so someone is going around collecting stray puppies and leaving them in situations that would cause them to die.
Thanks Mateusz, for all that you do. As you may remember, the puppies tested positive for parvo a week ago. As of now, they are still active and eating and not showing any symptoms. Though this could change in the next few days.
Thank you to everyone who donated for them. We received enough for all their treatment costs and vaccinations and sterilisation.
On the way to the market this evening, I saw this poor little girl hobbling on the side of the road. There was no way on earth I was leaving her!
One leg looks like it has been hacked off and the other
back leg is worn down.
I had no means of transporting her so had to call out the rescue team, who were actually having a rare day off.
Nobody around her seemed the slightest bit concerned about her except for a fish vendor who said he feeds her every day when she shows up.
She was right beside a really busy highway and it was a matter of time before she got killed.
I called her Tippi.
She is now at the shelter and I'll do an update first thing in the morning.
She will need surgery and rehab but it makes me so grateful to all our donors that we have the means to save her.
I know we have just done a fundraiser for the seven puppies so totally understand if you can't give any more. But if you can spare a small amount, 10 pesos, 1 dollar, that will help.

We would like to wish our Founder, Fearless Leader and friend Christine a very happy birthday today! It is no exaggeration to say that many lives, both canine and human have been made immeasurably better for all her hard work, love and dedication. Without Christine, there would be no DAS, and so many more poor souls lost to suffering than there already are. Please join with us in wishing her all the very best on her special day!
Muttley out on his morning walk! He seems to know his name already!
Muttley will be ready for adoption in 2 weeks, so if you want to give this boy a loving home, please message the inbox.
We rescued Barry on September 18. He was roaming the streets alone, forgotten by the world. In the first few weeks, he was still very timid and withdrawn. If you look closely, you can see him shaking in one of the first clips in the video. But when we filmed him again last week, he was confident enough to let a stranger pet him!
Regardless of the progress Barry has made, Barry is a dog who needs peace and quiet. This is something we cannot give him at the shelter. Moving to our new location will make a big difference, but even then, a sensitive dog like Barry needs a calm home in order to thrive.
A few days ago, we asked for your help to find another dog, Miki, a home, and she was adopted soon after that. How amazing would it be if we can do the same for Barry?! Please message us if you’d like to give Barry a loving home. If you can’t adopt, sharing this video also helps. Your support means the world to us!
