Please do not attempt “testing” your dog by touching or petting him/her while they are eating. I just don’t understand this philosophy.
There is ZERO to prove in this situation. If you are trying to teach your dog you are the dominant one, your information is incorrect.
Client: “But Ian, we have small kids in the house, we do this just in case the kids touch the dog while he/she is eating”.
Ian: “What are you going to do if your dog bites your hand while you are testing him/her”.
Client: “We will tell her no and scold her for it”
Ian: “So then your dog will have a bad association with eating and will probably start to eat faster. Your dog is disciplining you for reaching into its food. You are creating resource guarding”.
Client: “What can we do then”?
Ian: “Feed your dog in the crate”
Client: “But our dog isn’t crate trained”
Ian: “Then crate train your dog. Crate training your dog provides structure, boundaries, and safety while eating for the dog and kids. And it’s the cheapest babysitter you will ever pay for. The crate should be the bedroom for your dog.
Never have I seen a show about animals where the parents “test” their young by reaching into their food.
Let a sleeping dog lie.
Let an eating dog eat.

We now ask You to grant our special animal companions your Fatherly care and healing power to take away any suffering they have. Give us, their human friends, new understanding of our responsibilities to these creatures of Yours. They have trust in us as we have in You, our souls and theirs are on this earth together to give one another friendship, affection, and caring. Take our heartfelt prayers and fill Your ill or suffering animals with healing Light and strength to overcome whatever weakness of body they have. (Here mention the names of the animals needing prayer). Your goodness is turned upon every living thing and Your grace flows to all Your creatures. From our souls to theirs goodness flows, touching each of us with the reflection of Your love. Grant to our special animal companions long and healthy lives. Give them good relationships with us, and if You see fit to take them from us, help us to understand that they are not gone from us, but only drawing closer to You. Grant our prayer through the intercession of good St. Francis of Assisi, who honored You through all Your creatures. Give him the power to watch over our animal friends until they are safely with You in eternity, where we someday hope to join them in giving You honor forever. Amen. (You can make this a Novena for a sick pet, by praying this prayer for 9 consecutive days). O Lord Jesus Christ, our Savior, Physician of all living things, who through thy love and compassion doth heal all manner of sickness and affliction: do thou O Lord visit this pet (pet’s name) of his (her) suffering and heal him (her) of every sickness and affliction. Also grant to me patience and acceptance of whatever you may deem worthy for this humble pet. Be with my pet in this time of need and help him (her) to be comforted by our care and love. Amen.
