CANINE FUN FACTS

Your dog could be left or right-pawed. There have been a few studies around this and it turns out that just like us, dogs have a preferred hand (well, paw) to lead with. You can find out whether your dog is left or right-pawed by giving them their favorite toy or interactive game and seeing which paw they use to help them first.

CANINE FEEDING TIPS

Food In Relation To Your Dog’s Age
8-16 Weeks

This is the age when many pups will enter their new home. It’s important to not make huge diet changes at this time as you might inadvertently cause a stomach upset.

Many breeders will tell you what they have been feeding your dog. Ideally, you will continue with this, and introduce the diet you wish to feed them in small incremental stages over a few weeks until you are feeding your pup your preferred diet completely.

The best food to feed is a high quality commercial kibble designed for puppies. This ensures all the nutrients your puppy needs for growth and development are present.

You can add cooked meats and vegetables or rice as you wish; however, the main diet needs to be the commercially balanced kibble.

Raw diets are not recommended for very young pups as they don’t have the immune system development to cope with a high bacterial load. It is also very difficult to balance a raw diet for growing puppies.

Puppies have a high nutritional demand and can’t go for long without food. It’s very important to feed small meals regularly.

DID YOU KNOW?

Dogs have a sense of time but don't understand the 'concept' of time. Unlike humans, dogs don't have the ability to create actual measures of time, like the second, hour, and minute, and they don't know how to read clocks.

Left alone they may become increasingly anxious, indicating that they have an awareness of the passage of time. Plus, they react to a plethora of behavioral cues as though they know that 'it is time for walkies'.

Dogs Can Sniff At The Same Time As Breathing

Dogs have the ability to breathe in and out at the same time. When sniffing, dogs' noses are designed so that air can move in and out at the same time, creating a continuous circulation of air, unlike humans who have to either breathe in or out only.

WORD OF THE DAY

Otter Tail

The term “otter tail” comes from the rounded appearance of a Lab's tail. Labradors can use their tails to help with swimming, as a powerful rudder. Labs communicate through their tail – like other dogs. Some Labrador tails curve upwards (although not over their back), and others may be dead straight.

CANINE FEEDING TIPS

How Much Food Your Dog Needs

The amount of food your dog needs will largely depend on the size, breed and age of your dog, as well as how regularly it exercises. The key is to ensure you don’t overfeed or underfeed your dog. If ever you’re unsure, ask your vet to assess your dog’s diet and nutrition, and the condition of its body and overall health.

Always ensure your dog is well hydrated. This means making sure their water bowl is filled up at all times and is changed daily, so they can help themselves to water whenever they need or want.

When assessing your dog’s size and weight, it is far more important to look at their body shape than weight. You want your dog to be lean, which means you should be able to feel their ribs when you run your fingers firmly over their side and see a defined waist. If this isn’t possible, it’s diet time. Obesity in dogs is linked to decreased longevity and diseases such as osteoarthritis, and it is totally preventable.

CANINE VET INFO

Seasonal Allergies

Animals can develop seasonal allergies to some of the same environmental allergens that humans do, such as mold spores, grass, and pollens. Unfortunately for our beloved companions, domesticated animals are more prone to allergies than wild animals, probably because of the evolutionary “use-it-or-lose-it” imperative. Centuries of living indoors with humans (where there are fewer allergens) may have weakened their immune systems.

Though they may cough, sneeze, and wheeze, dog and cat allergies are most likely to show up as itchy skin (allergic dermatitis). Because most of their allergy symptoms can be symptoms of other health issues (like upper respiratory infections (URIs) or asthma), it can be hard to recognize allergy symptoms for what they are.

But it’s essential that we do. When they scratch their itchy places, cats and dogs create hot spots, shedding and balding that can develop into open sores and infections. Without treatment, they will only become more miserable.

Because our pets’ seasonal allergies manifest as itchy skin, they can be hard to tell apart from the two other types of skin allergies — food and flea bites — that also cause itching. For this reason, you should schedule a vet visit as soon as you notice symptoms.

Things your vet will look at might include a seasonal or cyclical pattern to your pet’s symptoms, the body area where the itching occurs, and any recent diet changes. They will also look for signs of flea bites and flea dirt. If your pet is a long-haired breed or has dark skin, these may be difficult to see yourself.

If they suspect seasonal allergies, your vet may do intradermal skin testing to determine the specific substance your pet is reacting to.

DID YOU KNOW?

Some Dogs Are Fast And Could Even Beat A Cheetah!

Most dogs could easily outrun a human – they’re built to run and chase! The fastest breed of dog by far, though, is the Greyhound. These speedy sight hounds can reach a top speed of 45mph within seconds of starting to run

But how does this beat a cheetah? Well, while a cheetah can get up to almost 70mph, they can only keep this going for around 30 seconds. Greyhounds, on the other hand, could easily run at speeds in excess of 35mph for seven miles. So despite the cheetah’s head start, they’d soon overtake!

OUR DOG BREEDS

Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Perhaps best known as the Queen's favorite dog breed, the gorgeous Corgi is a wonderful pup with lots of energy. Whether you own a Corgi or are considering adopting one in the near future, there are plenty of reasons why they make excellent family pets.

When given proper training and attention, Corgis make wonderful pets. Much like humans, their personalities too can vary, with characteristics including being happy, smart, fun-loving, loyal, stubborn, and playful.

Smart and affectionate, Corgis are a low-maintenance house dog. Before adopting one, it's worth knowing that their thick coats will need taking care of. Corgis have a medium-length double coat and therefore need regular grooming, more than once a week. They also shed significantly, sometimes twice a year.

CANINE FUN FACTS

Togo The Dog

In 1925, diphtheria swept through the small Alaskan town of Nome. Located 2 degrees south of the Arctic Circle, Nome was home to 455 Alaskan Natives and 975 European settlers. Between November and July, the port into Nome on the southern shore of Seward Peninsula in the Bering sea was icebound and inaccessible by steamship. During this time the only link to the rest of the world, was the Iditarod Trail, which runs 938 miles from the port of Seward to Nome.

Since no plane or ship could reach the isolated town, a unanimous decision was made to use multiple dogsled teams to transport the medicine across the dangerous land. Though Balto often gets the credit for saving the town of Nome, it was Togo, a Siberian Husky, who led his team across the most dangerous leg of the journey.

Named after Heihachiro Togo, a Japanese Admiral who fought in the war between Russia and Japan (1904-05), Togo was the lead sled dog of Leonhard Seppala. Seppala was a Norwegian breeder and racer of Siberian huskies from the Chukchi Inuit stock of Siberia. Togo was dark brown with cream, black and grey markings. He had ice blue eyes and weighed about 48 pounds at maturity.
By the time Togo led his team over 261 miles during the Great Race of Mercy to deliver diphtheria anti-toxin, he was 12 years old. Though Balto received the credit for saving the town, to those who know more than the Disney story, Balto is considered the backup dog. Balto ran 55 miles, while Togo's leg of the journey was the longest and most dangerous.

Togo retired in Poland Spring, Maine, where he was euthanized at the age of 16. Following his death, Seppala had Togo custom mounted. The mounted skin was put on display at the Shelbourne Museum in Vermont. Today, the mounted skin is on display at the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race Headquarters Museum in Wasilla, Alaska.

CANINE FEEDING TIPS

What Dogs Eat

It’s important to remember all dogs are individuals, and what diet might be fine for your friend’s dog may be completely inappropriate for your dog. When it comes to a daily diet for your dog, it’s important to consult with your vet.

Domesticated dogs are largely carnivores that eat some omnivorous foods. It is important to ensure your dog’s food is both complete and balanced for its stage of life, and if it has any medical issues.

It is entirely acceptable to feed your dog a pure kibble diet. Or you can mix their diet up with some cooked or raw meat, fish, vegetables and rice.

Many owners like to feed a raw meat diet to their dogs, and while this can suit some dogs very well, there are some important considerations you need to be aware of.

Choose human-grade meat as some pet meat and bone products will contain preservatives that can be bad for your dog’s health.
Practice impeccable food hygiene as the risk of both you and your dog getting a food-borne bacterial infection such as campylobacter or salmonella is high.

Have a veterinary nutritionist formulate the diet for you. Many raw diets are not balanced appropriately for stage of life or medical conditions.

A small amount of cooked meat such as boiled chicken or lamb is an option for dogs to eat, but avoid cooked bones or toxic substances such as onion sauces that may be present on the meat.

Tinned sardines, tinned tuna, and tinned salmon in spring water can be fed as an occasional treat to your dog, but always check for fish bones first.

Don’t be scared to bulk out your dog’s meal with cooked pumpkin or raw grated carrot. Many dogs lack enough fiber in their diet, and the addition of cooked pumpkin or grated carrot can improve their bowel health.

Be careful to make sure your dog isn’t consuming the whole bone as this can lead to constipation.

Generally, one to two bones a week is sufficient to help remove plaque from teeth. Remember, the bone should be large enough that the dog can’t fit it in its mouth whole, and they should be raw – cooked bone can splinter, which can cause internal damage or obstruct the intestine, both of which can be fatal.

CANINE VET INFO

Mites

Mites are tiny creatures, usually under a millimeter long, that burrow into your dog’s skin and cause irritation and inflammation. Mites are a fairly common health concern for dogs. They are parasites that can cause a range of skin conditions, from dry skin to hair loss. Mites live in the fur, or sometimes in the ears, and can make life uncomfortable for your dog. Mites are also what cause ‘mange’, a well-known skin condition in dogs.

If your pet is infested with dog mites, it is known as a condition called mange. The common types are “sarcoptic mange” and “demodectic mange”. Other conditions caused by mites include cheyletiellosis, and trombiculosis, also known as “harvest mite” infestation. Ear mites live in the ear canals of dogs.

Sarcoptic mange is a very itchy and unpleasant dog skin condition that can also affect humans. Affected dogs can cause damage to their skin and coat with constant scratching, leaving redness and sometimes scabs.

Most mite infestations can be treated with a simple anti-parasitic wash. Anti-parasitic shampoos can help cure your dog of many kinds of mite. You can buy them from many pet shops, although it’s best to ask your vet first to make sure you’re using the correct shampoo.

Your vet may instead provide you with medicine or a spot-on to help get rid of the infestation. Sometimes more than one treatment will be used at a time, and they may have to be administered for a while. The only thing you can do it be patient and persevere – and soon your dog will be mite-free!

OUR DOG BREEDS

Tibetan Mastiff

Tibetan Mastiffs are intelligent, independent, easy to house-train, loyal and gentle with their family — but also extremely protective of family and property.

The typical Tibetan Mastiff will not allow strangers into the home. This can be mild or extreme, depending on the dog, but it means planning parties or play dates for kids might be tricky.

These dogs are OK with other pets when properly introduced and socialized. They can become upset when family members are disciplined or if they argue. They can also be difficult eaters, going days without eating (this is more common in males).

The Tibetan Mastiff has a powerful jaw that can chew through wood doors, chain link fences and even concrete, so the first few years as a puppy can come with some destruction without proper chew toys and exercise.

CANINE FUN FACTS

Hachiko

Hachiko was an Akita Inu dog born on a farm in 1923 and later adopted by Hidesaburo Ueno, a professor of agriculture at the University of Tokyo. The two fell into a daily routine: Ueno and Hachiko would walk together to the Shibuya train station, where Ueno would pet Hachiko goodbye before getting on the train to work. Hachiko, who also became known as Hachi, would then spend the day waiting for Ueno to come back. In the meantime, local shopkeepers and station workers would keep an eye on him and often give him treats while he held his vigil for Ueno.

This routine continued for several years until one day, tragedy ensued. Ueno never came home from work, as he suffered a brain hemorrhage and died. Of course, Hachi had no idea about this, so the loyal dog continued to wait for his owner’s return. Every day like clockwork, when the train would appear, so would Hachi, searching for Ueno. Hachi’s fidelity earned him the nickname “the faithful dog.”

Hachi never gave up hope and continued to wait for more than nine years for his owner to return. Finally, one morning, on March 8, 1935, Hachiko was found dead. It is believed that he died due to natural causes. His body was taken to the train station’s baggage room, a place that had been one of his favorite hangouts. He was then photographed, surrounded by Ueno’s wife, Yaeko, as well as staff members at the station.

‱ Chicken
‱ Turkey
‱ Pork
‱ Lean beef
‱ Fish—salmon and sardines are especially good for dogs
‱ Eggs—cooked
‱ Cheeses—cottage cheese and hard cheeses in moderation are safe
‱ Yogurt—in moderation is an acceptable snack

FRUITS & VEGETABLES
Fruits are high in sugar and should be given to your dog in moderation.
‱ Bananas
‱ Blueberries
‱ Apples
‱ Seedless watermelon
‱ Tomatoes—in limited amounts as a treat
‱ Pumpkin
‱ Carrots
‱ Sweet potatoes
‱ Green beans

‱ Corn
‱ Quinoa
‱ Oatmeal
‱ Rice
‱ Bread—small amounts of plain bread are ok on occasion

OTHER FOODS
These other foods are safe to give your pup in moderation as a treat.

CANINE VET INFO

Vomiting Yellow Foam

Dogs sometimes vomit up yellow foam. This yellow foam is a form of bile, or digestive fluid, that is produced in the liver, stored in the gallbladder, and released into the small intestine, just below the stomach. This yellow foam usually means that its stomach is empty and the bile is causing stomach irritation.

Infrequent projectile bile from your dog may be due to Bilious Vomiting Syndrome. In addition to lack of food, this syndrome may be caused by a lack of fiber in the dog’s diet, drinking a lot of water, certain medications, allergies, eating fatty foods, or eating grass. To help combat Bilious Vomiting Syndrome in dogs, try breaking up meal time into multiple smaller meals and feed your dog a low-fat, high-fiber diet. If your dog is on medication and you suspect this may be the cause, discuss it with your vet for advice.

If your dog is vomiting frequently, take them to the vet. Observe your dog for other symptoms so that you can report these. Other symptoms will help your vet pinpoint what the underlying cause is.

It’s normal for your dog to get sick occasionally, especially after eating too fast. But when dogs vomit frequently, that’s cause for concern. Err on the side of caution and take your furry family if this happens and/or if you notice any of the symptoms mentioned above. Diagnosing and treating the problem will get your dog feeling better and back to his or her normal, active, lovable self!

OUR DOG BREEDS

Alaskan Malamute

The Alaskan Malamute features a powerful, sturdy body built for stamina and strength. It reigns as one of the oldest dog breeds whose original looks have not been significantly altered. This intelligent canine needs a job and consistent leadership to avoid becoming bored or challenging to handle.

Malamutes make great family pets and are good with children. Their large size and high energy means that they can overpower small children though, so they're best for households with kids over the age of 5.

An Alaskan Malamute will do well with an experienced pet parent, lots of open space to roam and burn off energy, and a cooler climate. If you can meet this breed’s needs, you’ll have an intelligent, highly-trainable, loving companion for life.

CANINE FUN FACTS

Balto

Balto was the sled dog who became a national hero, symbolizing rescue efforts to get supplies of diphtheria antitoxin serum to Nome, Alaska. When diphtheria threatened Nome in Jan. 1925, the city found itself without a supply of antitoxin and, almost completely isolated by the arctic winter, the only means of travel being by dog-sled over the frozen tundra.

Authorities established a relay system of sled dog teams to transport the serum from Fairbanks to Nome. For six days drivers and dogs struggled against high winds and -30deg. to -50deg.F temperatures. With driver Gunnar Kassan nearly frozen and blind from the weather, it was the lead dog, Balto, who brought the serum safely into Nome on Feb. 2.

The dogs arrived in Cleveland on March 19, and were given a parade and a hero's welcome before being taken to their home at the Brookside Zoo. A tablet honoring Balto was unveiled at the Zoo on June 19. After Balto's death on 14 Mar. 1933, his body was mounted and presented to THE CLEVELAND MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY.

OUR DOG BREEDS

Appenzeller Sennenhund

Also known as the Appenzeller Mountain Dog, this is the rarest of the four ancient Swiss mountain dog breeds. He got his start as an all-around farm dog — herding livestock, pulling carts, and guarding the farm — in the Appenzell region of Switzerland.

Today the Appenzeller's known for being a versatile working and family dog who's smart, cheerful, self-assured, reliable, and fearless. His slight wariness around strangers and tendency to bark makes him a good watchdog, but he needs lots of early socialization so he doesn't become overly suspicious. And because of his barkiness, he's not the best dog if you have nearby neighbors.

He's a great friend of children, but may nip at their heels as if they were livestock to be herded; younger Appenzellers are big and exuberant enough to accidentally knock over small kids.

Because he's got a strong work ethic and lots of energy, this breed isn't suited to an inactive lifestyle. Provide him with training and a job or dog sport he can do, or he'll be an unhappy camper. Like other breeds that need lots of exercise and stimulation, he can grow bored and destructive if he doesn't get it. He excels at agility, herding, and obedience trials. At home, teach your Appenzeller to pull a cart with your gardening supplies.

CANINE VET INFO

Canine Influenza

Canine influenza (also known as dog flu) is a contagious respiratory disease in dogs caused by specific Type A influenza viruses known to infect dogs.

The signs of this illness in dogs are cough, runny nose, fever, lethargy, eye discharge, and reduced appetite, but not all dogs will show signs of illness. The severity of illness associated with canine flu in dogs can range from no signs to severe illness resulting in pneumonia and sometimes death.

There is no cure for dog flu. Treatment is supportive, and your veterinarian can advise you on the best ways to keep your dog comfortable during his illness and recovery. Some dogs may require supportive care, such as fluids, to aid their recovery, as well as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications to reduce fevers.

Proper vaccination with both strains of the Canine Influenza Virus (CIV) vaccine will require two initial sets of injections given two to four weeks apart, followed by a yearly booster. NOTE: YOUR PET IS NOT CONSIDERED PROTECTED FROM BOTH VIRUSES UNTIL A MINIMUM OF 14 DAYS AFTER THE SECOND INJECTION.

CANINE FUN FACTS

Sergeant Stubby

Sergeant Stubby was a dog who helped soldiers fighting in World War One. Stubby went on to become a very brave soldier who won lots of medals before reaching the age of two.

Sergeant Stubby took part in many battles, including the Battle of Marne and the Battle of Chateau-Thierry.

Stubby provided a number of skills that benefited the soldiers:

- Stubby had great hearing and he knew when the enemy was coming, even from far away.

- He took on the role of a mercy dog, where he found and comforted dying and injured soldiers in battle.

- Dogs have a greater sense of smell than humans, so Stubby was able to detect the dangerous smell of gas before any of the human soldiers could.

Stubby however did get injured whilst helping the soldiers. He once got caught in a gas attack, and he also got hit by shrapnel from a gr***de. Shrapnel are little fragments that are thrown out after an explosion.

Sergeant Stubby passed away in 1926, when he was about 10 years old.
