📢TIPS ON TANK MAINTENANCE 📢

☑️Ano naaalis ng Macroalgae sa system (Saltwater)?
- Nitrogenous wastes (Ammonia/Ammonium, Nitrite, Nitrate)
- Phosphate
- Heavy metals
- Iron

☑️Ano naaalis ng - GFO/Al Oxide media:
- Phosphate, Silicates, Arsenic

☑️GAC (Carbon):
- Dissolved organic compounds (DOCs), tannins, secondary metabolites galing sa algae, sponges at corals.

☑️Zeolite:
- Heavy metals, free ammonia

☑️Skimmer:
- DOCs, Detritus (particulate organic matter)

☑️ Filter floss/foam/pads/socks:
- Detritus

☑️Biomedia, rocks, sand:
- Bahay ng bacteria na nagpaprocess ng ammonia/nitrite/nitrate at phosphate.

Today's tip: struggling with both algae and nutrient problems? Make room for some macroalgae.

Macroalgae can outcompete nuisance microalgae in the main tank, and may also help manage elevated nutrients in the system.

Other benefits of running a dedicated refugium or inline macroalgae display tank includes:

✅more stable pH. Running your refugium on reverse photoperiod may help avoid large dips in pH during nighttime, when the lights on your display tank are turned off.

✅Heavy metal bioremediation. Macroalgae absorbs and bioaccumulates heavy metals, taking them out of the water column.

✅provides food and shelter for microfauna (especially pods!), small bivalves and sponges.

Additional tips:

➡️Use warm white or neutral white LED floodlights or splashproof full spectrum growlights, appropriately rated for the size of your refugium or macroalgae tank.

➡️We usually recommend using 20-30w warm or neutral white LED floodlights for every 12-16" area.

➡️You may run the lighting on reverse photoperiod, around 12-18 hours daily.

➡️Regularly prune and harvest your macroalgae, to avoid sporulation (like caulerpa going 'sexual') or massive die offs. You may give your extra macroalgae to other hobbyists in need, or feed them to tangs. 🙂

Today's tip: Controlling turf algae

Algae is normal, and an integral part of the reef ecosystem. But overgrowth or rapid, uncontrollable spread on your display tank isn't. The spread of algae can smother or kill your precious corals and can be very difficult to control once they get a foothold.

Problems with wiry or stiff, brush-like turf algae? We've been there, they're a total pain in the rear and believe us, we don't want them back. 😂

Let's get back to the basics:

1. Your water parameters, particularly your nitrate and phosphate levels and your filtration -

Are the levels too high? Have you been feeding too much or is your filtration sufficient? Tank overstocked?

Accumulation of detritus (mulm/silt) may also promote turf algae growth.

Low pH, though not directly responsible, may also be a compounding factor to the problem.

2. Supplements - have you been blindly dosing too much food supplements or "trace" elements?

Algae or phytoplankton-based food or food supplements are rich in nutrients and in iron and other metals which may trigger algae outbreaks.

Not all "supplements" are necessary, and not all will give you fantastic results. Some may even become the main reason for your algae woes, especially when used incorrectly.

3. Do you have critters to keep the algae in check? Try keeping small urchins, chitons and if you have a nice big tank, seahares.

Blennies may be helpful too.

4. Resist the urge to dose any medicine or product that claims to get rid of algae quickly. Such products may crash your tank.

5. Always clean and dip new frags! They may carry algae spores or worse, pests.

6. Sharpen your tank husbandry skills - be consistent with your water changes, feed correctly and resist the urge of putting too much fish, or cocktail-dosing overhyped, snakeoil that claims to magically make everything super colorful. 😉

7. Keep your system simple.
