A cloacolith on a sulcata tortoise

Cloacoliths are solid concentration of urates that build up on the cloaca. This large mass then clogs the cloaca, preventing proper expulsion of urates and f***s. This causes the animal to strain as they try to force it out. In this case, trapping the phallus outside the body.

Cloacoliths can occur from poor diet, over administration or minerals, or due to under lying renal problems and dehydration.

Been working with venomous snakes since 2017 which started with pit vipers way back in my college days.

Diogenes was one of the first cobras I worked with. From there I had the opportunity to handle Samar cobras, and even king cobras. Diogenes was a rescue we got at the NEWT. He was eventually kept under DENR supervision as an animal ambassador. He is used to teach people about cobras, and snakes in general.

Now working with "hot" Snakes has its own thrill but we always recommend that people not do it for show. Respect must be given to the animal and the potential for danger they hold. Most times, a bite will occur only when the handler fails to remember this.

This hognose snake was presented with vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, lethargy and wasting. It was exposed to another hognose for breeding that tested positive for cryptosporodium but eventually passed away.

Since this male was in a slightly better off condition the client opted to have it tested and confined. It tested positive via testkit and treatment immediately.
3 days of dewormer treatment was done while the snake was force feed ground food and given fluids to keep up with nutritional demands. It was then followed by 14 days of anticoccidial medicine.

The snake has become more active, no longer vomits, gaining weight and has began to have more appealing f***l output. Tho cases like this can shift dramatically depending on the snake's condition, seeing it recover even just a little bit brings hope for its condition.

Tho snakes like this are considered highly contagious and would require special care when being returned to the collection.

Hunting and consuming wildlife is illegal under RA 9147 or the wildlife resources conservation and protection Act. Despite this, the law is not widely known to the public, and usually lacks enforcement. So posts like this one are pretty common in social media.

The photo (sent by a follower) shows a chopped up reticulated python and a roasted civet cat. Both animals are native to the Philippines and this protected by law. It is unfortunate that people still post this as a sort of flex or for fun when it is clearly illegal. If you ever encounter such people, educating them about what they are doing is the best thing you can do, followed by a report to the authorities.

Protozoal Infections are one of the most common cases we handle. But what are protozoans?

Protozoans (the small moving things in the video) are intestinal parasites. They can be acquired through dirty water, contaminated surfaces (soil, bedding, enclosures), infected prey items, or direct contact with infected animals.

Once inside the pet they infest the gastrointestinal tract. Here they compete with the body for nutrition and begin to break down the intestinal lining. This manifests as diarrhea, lack of appetite, weakness, bloated appearances, poor body condition scores, and vomiting.

They are sometimes overlooked especially if the pets show signs of other diseases, but can occur as co-infections. Since they wear down the body so much that it opens them up. To other diseases.

Treatment starts with accurate diagnoses then followed by medications to thin down their numbers to a more controlled population before trying to fully purge them. Tho extreme cases can prove fatal. They can also easily spread from animal to animal, especially if hygiene and husbandry is poor.

Prevention is the key when it comes to these. This can be done with proper sanitation, good choice of feeding sources, clean water, and preventive medications during wellness and general check ups.

General check up and wellness.

Just finished checking a heckloads of ball pythons all the way in Pampanga. The collection had different problems in varying stages: from a snake with early signs of stomatitis, a snake with a small patch of scale rot, and a few ones showing signs of protozoal infection.. The rest of the collection were fine so they were given anti-parasitics.

A general check up on a large collection monitors the overall health of all the animals. It provides a physical observation to the animals' history that the owner provides. Correlating this allows us to home in on possible problems and plan out the series of diagnostic tests and treatments to come.

Kudos to Ej Ball Python for this post.

Quarantine is one of the most important aspects in any hobby involving life animals. It is a period of observation to check for any signs of diseases, pests or parasites that the new animal may be harbouring.

The period depends from person to person, but a minimum of 2 months would be the safest. This would give animals in the current collection physical distance from any sick new arrivals.

Quarantine also involves discipline in limiting handling for new pets, as well as a separate routine to avoid direct contact infections.

Failure to undergo quarantine can cause the loss of an entire collection from diseases or parasites.

QUARANTINED her for almost 10 weeks ✔️✅✔️✅

Any new ball python entering my collection goes straight into quarantine. This isn’t a suggestion IT’S A MUST. Proper monitoring now prevents problems later and ensures long term health for every animal.

When selecting a BREEDER, it is essential to choose one who prioritizes ANIMAL HEALTH, ETHICAL PRACTICES AND TRANSPARENCY over profit. Responsible breeding begins with ACCOUNTABILITY and CARE.

White lipped pythons!

A snake I've been dreaming to see since I started keeping reptiles way back in 2014. This one had a stuck eye cap but was easily treated.

Typical to their species this guy was a little feisty. But giving it time to relax made it a pleasure to handle afterwards.

Returned to check up on this deer herd.

There used to be 5 of them, but after being hit with coccidiosis, they lost a couple. The problem first started out around 2 months after their arrival. Two were observed to be pregnant but ended up having still births. 2 of them began showing signs of lethargy and a decrease in appetite as well as weight loss. We were called in soon after the second deer had a still birth.

It was found that they were given pig feeds with minimal supplementation and had over exposure to the elements. The problems were addressed, f***lysis was done and dewormers given.

Fecalysis revealed eimeria sp. We're present. Treatment started immediately. We visited again after two months with the herd looking healthier and more active.
