Photo dump from the 30th Philippine Animal Hospital Association held in Cebu.

It was wonderful to have met both old friends from my college days, new colleagues from different regions of the country, the enlightening speakers who shared their knowledge, and the new friends made during the event.

Hope to see you all soon again! It's always amazing to see how my friends are doing and how far they've gone.

With the exotic veterinarians: Drs. Manfred and Claudia Hochleitner who came all the way from Austria to give their talks on exotic pet medicine, Dr. Neilsen Donato from Born to be wild, Dr. Bayani Vandenbroeck who has a load of experience working with Philippine eagles, Dr. Mennie Alicap the veterinarian of DENR-CAR, and of course Dr. Leo Almelor my good friend from New Alabang. It's always amazing to talk and learn from other vets in the practice, especially those with experiences and insights such as theirs.

Castrating sugar gliders

Sugar gliders are usually castrated to control population, reduce aggression, sexual frustration and male odor. There are two methods for castration: poms-on which is similar to small animal castration and poms-off which involved the full removal of the sc***um.

These two gliders were castrated using the poms-off method. Pain medications were given prior to induction for smoother analgesic effect upon recovery. They were also given ecollars to prevent wound tampering as well as prescription medication for pain management and wound cleaning.

Thanks so much to Benguet State University's College of veterinary medicine's Veterinary Teaching Hospital, the clinians and their resident vets: Dr. Charles Gaerlan and Dr. Sincerely Pinay-an for accomodating us in this case.

Mites!!!

This is Leo the bearded dragon. He recently got infested by mites. Mites in reptiles usually occurs in cases of poor husbandry or in Leo's case: after a walk outdoors.

With poor husbandry, mites will explode in numbers. Such cases can lead to anemia and Hypovolemia in our pet reptiles. This can be very problematic and if left untreated: fatal.

Leo was given medications to remove the mites and is now doing well.

Recieved some samples from PET IDEAS, INC.

Their new line of products would be focusing on exotic pets. Mainly supplements for all our feathered, scaled and tiny mammalian pets. We can't wait to try them out and see the results.

A common issue with leopard geckos, eye infections can be caused by stuck sheds, debris, or injuries. This causes irritation in the eyes which then leads to eyecrusts and eventually pus. This hardens and blocks out vision. It is very uncomfortable for the geckos and in exteme cases (such as this one) may no longer fully heal.

Make sure your geckos have a moist hide and are well hydrated. It also helps to regularly have them checked, especially when you notice something wrong or off.

As a veterinarian and an animal hobbyist, it's always fun to talk about animals. Sharing the passion and tidbits of knowledge is something I've been doing since I was in college.

Last August 13 I was invited to talk about Red-eared sliders to a preschool class.
Some of the highlights of the talk was:

1. Me: "what does the turtle eat? "
Student: "Me! "

2. Teacher: "Does anyone have any questions? "
Student *raises their hand*: "Giraffe!!!!! "

As master Yoda once said: "Truly amazing the mind of a child is. " And it is true. As silly as these things go, it is important to leave impressions on children that would positively affect their growth. It is our duty to ensure that they gain appreciation and respect for animals, and a wider understanding of our world and place in it.

Thank you again to Teacher Kristen for the invitation!

Some snapshots of our post Typhoon visit to Pugad Adventure. Fortunately despite some trees being uprooted, there were no casualties. All animals despite a few parasite infested ones were healthy.

Came across this as I was scrolling and I couldn't help but talk about it.

The caption states "cats are the best deterrent for venomous snakes". That is false. As you can see in the video the snake is a brown rat snake. A nonvenomous species of snakes that primarily preys on rodents. Also, if you have seen the video the snake is actually trying to escape. Snakes by nature will not go after people or pets (expect in cases of larger species). They prefer to stay away from humans, and will (if given the opportunity) hide and evade if detected.

The cat is the villain here. It is the one continuously chasing after the snake. I love animals, but I have a strong heart for wildlife. And I say this with the acknowledgement that it will be a very unpopular opinion:
Cats do not belong outside. Outdoor cats should be kept indoors, either as pets or in Pounds or shelters until they are given a foster home. Cats do not belong in our environment and they will never be. They cause more damage to wildlife, the ecosystem and even public and animal health than snakes. But are seen as heroes when they are in fact disrupting our native ecosystem.

Snakes are harmless most of the time. You are more likely to be bitten and scratched by a cat or dog that a wild snake. Wherein most cases of bites occurs because of human interaction.

In the end, it is we the people who have to adapt to living with wildlife. Not the other way around.
