Not all X-rays bring good news.
This sweet girl was suffering from a life-threatening Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV)—a dangerous twisting of the stomach that can kill within hours.
Thankfully, she was diagnosed within minutes of arriving and taken to surgery less than an hour later.
Because of the AKVH team’s speed, skill, and teamwork, L is now back home and once again playing with her siblings 💙🐾

Feline Pe**le Urethrostomy (PU) is a delicate surgical procedure performed on male cats who suffer from repeated urinary blockages. In this surgery, a new permanent opening is created to allow urine to pass more freely, bypassing the narrow and frequently obstructed urethra.

Here’s Dr. Ging, assisted by Dr. Jassy, performing one of these intricate procedures.

PU surgery requires precision and experience—but just as critical is the post-operative care. Without strict monitoring, cats may lick or nibble at the surgical site, risking suture removal, dehiscence, or urethral stump retraction, which could lead to stricture and recurrence.

Not at all! A very good one in fact 👍
Our Echocardiograms and other ultrasound procedures are always performed in a dark room for optimum clarity of the images.

And we are happy to have the country’s leading cardiology practitioner, Dr. Karlo Gicana, in AKVH’s dark ultrasound room again!
Dr. Gicana performed 16 advanced echocardiograms for patients from AKVH and referring clinics across Cebu. Assisting him was our very own Cardiology resident, Dr. Isay Melencion.

That’s 16 patients now on the path to clearer diagnoses and better cardiac care.

Dr. Gicana will be at AKVH again on Sept 6. Limited slots remaining.

T’s Story: A Close Call with Cardiac Arrest

T came in as a cardiac emergency a couple of weeks ago.
At home, she had suddenly started breathing rapidly — and her tongue had turned blue. Her caregivers acted fast and rushed her to AKVH.

Upon arrival, her attending veterinarian noted a dangerously abnormal ECG: an idioventricular rhythm.
This meant T’s natural pacemaker had stopped working — and her heart’s lower chambers were trying to beat on their own in a desperate attempt to escape death.
She was suffering from acute myocarditis and had just experienced a heart attack!

Thanks to the swift action of Dr. Jassy, supported by Dr. Eli and Dr. Shawn, T was quickly diagnosed and started on life-saving medications that helped stabilize her heartbeat. Today, her heart is beating regularly again — what a relief!
T will need to stay on heart medications moving forward.

👏 Kudos to the observant staff who got her to us in time — and hats off to the veterinary team who acted fast and acted right. You gave T another chance at life!

Our veterinary technicians are so much more than people who take temperatures or press buttons on machines.

At AKVH, we make sure our vet techs are trained to be confident, capable, and indispensable members of the team—the right hand of our licensed veterinarians.

They do and know more than what the average client thinks.

Our vet techs are proficient in essential, non-machine-dependent lab procedures like blood and skin cytology. They’re trained in life-saving techniques such as intubation and CPR, and they can place nasogastric feeding tubes with precision. They are also skilled in ultrasonography and can step in when the doctor’s hands are full elsewhere.

In this photo, Vet Tech Chrislyn is performing an abdominocentesis—a critical procedure to remove excess fluid from the abdomen and relieve patient distress.

Our Veterinary technicians are not there to walk patients or clean test tubes.

It is a great honor to be taught by one of the best teachers in Diagnostic Imaging, Dr. Hock Gan Heng.
Dr. Heng is a Diplomate of both American and European Colleges of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging and former Professor and Head of Diagnostic Imaging at Purdue University, USA.

Relaxed Surgery Mode with Dr. Ging, Dr. Isay and Dr. Shawn. 🐾

Most people think the surgeon calls all the shots in the operating room—but that’s not entirely true. At AKVH, the real decision-maker is often the anesthetist.

Our anesthetist’s job starts before the first incision is made. During pre-op, they carefully assess the patient, and if something isn’t right—they have the authority to postpone or even cancel the surgery. Why? Because patient safety always comes first.

During surgery, the anesthetist monitors every heartbeat, every breath, every waveform on the monitor, ensuring that the patient stays stable and pain-free. It’s one of the most critical roles in the OR.

Leading this vital work at AKVH is Dr. Shawn, our Head Anesthetist. He trained in Anesthesia and Analgesia at the University of Sydney and now heads our dedicated anesthesia team.

Safe surgery isn’t just about the surgeon—it’s about the whole team working together for your pet’s well-being. 💙

This cutesome little baby X had a very tough time a couple of weeks ago.
She was admitted after a fourth opinion consult for seizures, inability to stand or balance herself.
A thorough neurological exam revealed X’s problem. With the correct meds, X’s seizures stopped by the next day, she was grooming vigorously and responsive. By day 3 she was able to start standing and taking a few steps 😊😊😊
Thanks to a timely and well performed neuro evaluation, X got a diagnosis and is now home.
Full recovery is still far off though but with supportive and loving furparents, we are hoping for the best 😊
X’s diagnosis came about by collaboration and co management among Dr. Liola, Dr. Shawn and Dr. Eli. Job well done Doctors 👏👏
