01/08/2023

Too much algae in a dwarf shrimp tank can be a common issue, but it can be managed effectively with some practical steps. Here’s what you can do to address excessive algae growth:

1. Reduce Lighting: Algae thrive in the presence of light. Consider reducing the duration of light exposure in the tank by reducing the photoperiod or using a timer to regulate the lighting schedule. Aim for about 6-8 hours of light per day.

2. Limit Nutrients: Algae growth is often fueled by excess nutrients in the water, such as nitrates and phosphates. To control algae, ensure proper tank maintenance, perform regular water changes, and avoid overfeeding the shrimp.

3. Balance Feeding: Feed the shrimp only the amount they can consume within a few minutes. Overfeeding leads to excess nutrients that can contribute to algae growth.

4. Introduce Algae-Eating Shrimp or Fish: Some algae-eating shrimp species, like Amano shrimp or certain snails like Nerite snails, can help control algae by grazing on it. However, ensure that these tank mates are compatible with your dwarf shrimp.

5. Manual Removal: Use an aquarium brush or sponge to gently scrub away excess algae from glass, decorations, and plant leaves during water changes. Be careful not to disturb the substrate or harm the shrimp.

6. Introduce Fast-Growing Plants: Fast-growing live plants can compete with algae for nutrients, helping to naturally reduce algae growth. Plants like hornwort, water sprite, and java moss are good options.

7. Add Floating Plants: Floating plants like duckweed or frogbit can shade the aquarium, reducing light pe*******on and inhibiting algae growth.

8. Algae Eaters and Snails: Consider adding small algae-eating fish like Otocinclus catfish or algae-eating snails like Malaysian Trumpet snails, as they can also help control algae.

Regular maintenance and a balanced ecosystem will help keep algae in check and provide a healthy environment for your dwarf shrimp. Always be mindful of the shrimp’s sensitivity to chemical treatments, and avoid using chemical algae removers unless absolutely necessary and shrimp-safe.

30/07/2023

Water changes are an essential aspect of maintaining a healthy environment for your dwarf shrimp. Regular water changes help remove accumulated waste, excess nutrients, and pollutants, ensuring optimal water quality and supporting the well-being of the shrimp. Here are some tips for water changes in dwarf shrimp keeping:

1. Frequency: Aim for regular and consistent water changes. A common recommendation is to perform 10-20% water changes weekly. However, the frequency may vary based on your tank size, stocking density, and filtration system. Larger tanks with fewer shrimp may require less frequent changes, while smaller heavily stocked tanks may benefit from more frequent changes.

2. Gradual Changes: When doing water changes, make sure to match the temperature and water parameters of the new water with the existing tank water. Sudden changes in water conditions can stress the shrimp and may lead to health issues.

3. Use Water Conditioner: Always treat the new water with a suitable water conditioner to neutralize chlorine, chloramine, and heavy metals. These substances can be harmful to the shrimp and must be removed before adding the water to the tank.

4. Avoid Disturbing Substrate: Be gentle while siphoning and avoid disturbing the substrate excessively. Shrimp love to graze on biofilm and microorganisms on the substrate, so preserving this delicate ecosystem is beneficial.

5. Monitor Water Parameters: Regularly test your aquarium water parameters to ensure they remain within the desired range. Monitoring parameters like ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, and water hardness will help you identify any potential issues and take corrective actions.

6. Partial Water Changes: Perform partial water changes rather than completely draining the tank. Removing a portion of the water helps maintain beneficial bacteria in the filter and prevents significant fluctuations in water parameters.

7. Observe Shrimp Behavior: After water changes, observe the shrimp’s behavior. They should continue to exhibit normal activity and show no signs of stress or distress.

By incorporating regular water changes into your dwarf shrimp keeping routine, you create a clean and stable environment for your aquatic inhabitants. Healthy water conditions promote shrimp well-being, encourage natural behaviors, and support successful breeding in the aquarium.

28/07/2023

A berried dwarf shrimp refers to a female shrimp of the dwarf shrimp species (such as Neocaridina or Caridina) that is carrying eggs under her abdomen. The term “berried” is used because the eggs resemble small berries, giving the female shrimp a distinctive appearance.

When a female dwarf shrimp becomes “berried,” it means she has successfully mated with a male shrimp, and the fertilized eggs are developing and growing in a specialized brood pouch under her abdomen. The eggs appear as a cluster of tiny, round, or oval-shaped spheres, varying in color from pale green to yellow or dark brown, depending on the species and genetics.

The berried state indicates that the female shrimp is in good reproductive health and that the breeding conditions in the aquarium are suitable for successful mating. It is an exciting and rewarding sight for shrimp keepers, as it indicates the possibility of new generations of dwarf shrimps being born in the aquarium.

During this time, it is essential to provide the berried female with a peaceful and stable environment, ample hiding spots, and a nutritious diet to support her during the gestation period. The eggs will hatch after a few weeks, and tiny shrimp fry, known as shrimplets, will emerge. Shrimplets are vulnerable during their early stages, and proper care and attention are necessary to ensure their survival and growth.

Here are some important steps to take when you have berried dwarf shrimp:

1. Provide Adequate Hiding Places: Pregnant shrimp can be sensitive to disturbances and may prefer hiding spots to feel secure. Live plants, mosses, and decorations with crevices offer excellent hiding places for berried shrimp.
- Shrimp Pod: https://shope.ee/6pXGdXWECr
- Shrimp Cones: https://shope.ee/qG3Uxq97Q
- Cholla wood: https://shope.ee/9erS1FM39e

2. Maintain Stable Water Parameters: Keep water conditions stable and within the ideal range for your specific shrimp species. Avoid sudden changes in temperature, pH, and other water parameters that could stress the shrimp.
- Freshwater Master Test Kit: https://shope.ee/4pmCGPhIIl
- GH & KH Test Kit: https://shope.ee/20S0tFvGhJ
- TDS Meter: https://shope.ee/8A2eEcoVxj
- Thermometer: https://shope.ee/2L4rHw9yyQ

3. Avoid Aggressive Tank Mates: Keep the berried shrimp away from any aggressive or predatory tank mates that may harm her or her eggs.

4. Monitor for Molting: Berried shrimp are more vulnerable during molting. Observe them closely during this time, and if possible, provide additional hiding spots to protect them during the molting process.

5. Feed Nutritious Foods: Offer a varied diet of high-quality shrimp-specific foods, as well as blanched vegetables and other supplements. Providing ample nutrition supports the health of the mother and the development of her eggs.
- Shrimp Herb: https://shope.ee/9erS1ShGX2
- Shrimp Dinner: https://shope.ee/3faEsTcUsj
- Shrimp Fit: https://shope.ee/4fSm4LgGkT
- Snowflakes: https://shope.ee/4Kpvfm2ezJ

6. Allow Natural Development: Allow the berried shrimp to carry and hatch her eggs naturally. Avoid disturbing the berried shrimp during this time, as any stress could cause her to release the eggs prematurely.

7. Prepare for Hatchlings: When the eggs are close to hatching, ensure there are ample hiding places for the tiny shrimplets. Provide finely crushed food, such as baby shrimp powder or powdered algae, to feed the newborn shrimp.
- Shrimp Baby: https://shope.ee/30KY5Ok881

Remember that each shrimp species may have specific breeding requirements, so it’s essential to research the specific needs of your dwarf shrimp species to provide the best care. With proper attention and care, you can increase the chances of successful breeding and the survival of the berried shrimp’s offspring in your aquarium.

26/07/2023

Using leaves in dwarf shrimp keeping can be highly beneficial for creating a natural and healthy environment for the shrimp. Leaves offer various advantages, including:

1. Tannins Release: Certain leaves, such as Indian almond leaves (Catappa leaves) or oak leaves, slowly release tannins into the water. Tannins have antibacterial and antifungal properties, which can help promote the overall health of the shrimp and reduce the risk of diseases.
2. Food Source: As the leaves break down, they create a biofilm, which serves as a natural food source for the shrimp. Shrimp love to graze on biofilm, which provides essential nutrients and supports their dietary needs.
3. Hiding Spots: Leaves provide excellent hiding spots for shrimp, especially during molting. Molting shrimp are vulnerable, and the cover of leaves can offer protection from potential predators or aggressive tank mates.
4. Encourages Breeding: The presence of leaves in the aquarium can stimulate the breeding behavior of shrimp. They are attracted to the leaf litter as a suitable location to deposit and hatch their eggs.
5. Water Conditioning: The tannins released by leaves can have a mild water conditioning effect. They can help lower the pH slightly and create a more natural, blackwater-like environment, which many shrimp species appreciate.

When using leaves in the aquarium, it’s essential to choose ones that are safe for shrimp. Avoid leaves that have been treated with pesticides or chemicals. Rinse the leaves thoroughly before adding them to the tank to remove any potential contaminants. As the leaves break down, you can replace them with fresh ones periodically to maintain their beneficial effects.

Overall, using leaves in dwarf shrimp keeping contributes to the well-being and natural behavior of the shrimp, fostering a thriving and harmonious environment in the aquarium.

25/07/2023

Neocaridina shrimp molt as part of their natural growth and development process. Molting is essential for these shrimp to accommodate their increasing size throughout their life cycle. As they grow, their exoskeleton, the hard outer shell that protects their body, becomes restrictive and cannot expand any further.

To overcome this limitation, neocaridina shrimp undergo molting, where they shed their old exoskeleton and emerge with a new, softer and larger one underneath. During this process, the shrimp retreat to a safe hiding spot to molt, as they are vulnerable to predators and tankmates while their new exoskeleton is still soft.

Once the molt is complete, the shrimp’s body hardens, and they resume their normal activities. The old exoskeleton left behind is often consumed by the shrimp, providing a valuable source of calcium and other nutrients to support the development of the new exoskeleton and promote overall health.

Molting is a regular and necessary part of the growth cycle for neocaridina shrimp, and providing them with proper care, a balanced diet, and stable water conditions can support successful molting and ensure their well-being in the aquarium.

Understanding these facts about neocaridina shrimp molting is crucial for providing the appropriate care and environment to support their natural growth and health in the aquarium. Ensuring stable water conditions and offering a balanced diet are key factors in promoting successful molting for these fascinating shrimp.

Shrimpers’ Spotlight: A Bright Guide to Dwarf Shrimp Tank Lighting

Lighting is an essential aspect of setting up a dwarf shrimp tank and plays a crucial role in supporting the health and well-being of the shrimp and the overall ecosystem. Here are some important considerations regarding lighting in dwarf shrimp tanks:

1. Low to Moderate Intensity: Opt for low to moderate-intensity lighting in the shrimp tank. Dwarf shrimp, especially those of the Neocaridina and Caridina species, prefer subdued lighting conditions. Intense lighting can cause stress and reduce their activity levels.
2. Natural Day-Night Cycle: Mimic a natural day-night cycle by providing the tank with 8 to 10 hours of light daily. This helps to establish a regular routine for the shrimp and promotes their natural behaviors.
3. Live Plants: If you have live plants in the tank, ensure that the lighting is suitable for their growth. Low to moderate light-demanding plants, like Java Moss, Java Fern, and Anubias, are great choices as they provide hiding spots for the shrimp and contribute to the overall tank health.
4. Avoid Direct Sunlight: Avoid placing the tank in direct sunlight. Sunlight can lead to rapid algae growth, which might negatively affect the water quality and shrimp health.
5. Gradual Lighting Changes: When turning the lights on or off, make the transitions gradual rather than abrupt. This helps reduce stress on the shrimp and prevents sudden changes in their behavior.

Bonus Tip:
LED Lighting: Consider using LED lights designed for planted aquariums or shrimp tanks. These lights are energy-efficient, provide sufficient brightness, and often come with adjustable intensity and color settings.

By selecting appropriate lighting and providing a natural day-night cycle, you can create a comfortable and inviting environment for your dwarf shrimp, promoting their well-being and encouraging natural behaviors in the tank.

While tank decor is not an absolute necessity for neocaridina tanks, it is highly beneficial and recommended for creating a more natural and engaging environment for the shrimp. Tank decor, such as live plants, rocks, driftwood, and shrimp caves, offers several advantages:

1. Hiding Places: Decor provides hiding spots for neocaridina shrimp, which helps reduce stress and increases their sense of security. This is especially important during molting or when they feel threatened by other tankmates.
2. Biofilm and Algae Growth: Live plants and decor surfaces serve as a source of biofilm and algae, which are essential parts of the shrimp’s diet. They encourage natural grazing behaviors and contribute to a more balanced and nutritious diet.
3. Aesthetics: Decorative elements like live plants and driftwood enhance the visual appeal of the tank, creating a pleasing and natural-looking environment.
4. Biological Filtration: Certain decor items, like porous rocks and driftwood, can support beneficial bacteria growth, contributing to the biological filtration process and improving overall water quality.

Overall, while it is possible to keep neocaridina shrimp in a bare-bottom tank, adding appropriate tank decor significantly benefits their well-being, health, and reproductive success. Why get from us?

Shrimp for Keeps PH is a home-based Dwarf Shrimp Breeder situated at Sampaloc Manila, Philippines.

OUR PRACTICE

Our farm focuses mainly on the Neocaridina specie which is less demanding compared to their Caridina counterpart. We grow our fauna sustainably, feeding them mostly natural products like dried Talisay and Mulberry leaves, both of which are readily available here in the Philippines. Regular water changes and quality checks are done on our tanks, to ensure that our shrimps are in their optimum environment.

Our Neocaridinas are locally bred and have already acclimated to the weather here in Manila. We take great care of our Shrimps, so that they are vibrant and healthy when they arrive at your doorstep.
