On the 7th Day of Christmas, a hooman gave Parker... 🎶🐾

𝗔 𝗰𝗮𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗱! Because of his paralyzed hind legs, Parker doesn't get to enjoy things like running, climbing and jumping. He does like to find good napping spots, and he's very fond of soft beds. It's the only luxury he ever asks for (except for the occasional cat treat!)

WAITTTTTTTTTTT! Can your pet really eat that?

Christmas time means lots of delicious food, and consequently, lots of leftovers that pet owners often reserve for their fur babies.

While well-intentioned (maybe even practical), we should be careful not to feed our pets potentially harmful or toxic food!

𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿! Malvi wishes she could roam outdoors to go potty, but the hoomans are very strict about keeping them indoors (where it's safe!) And in a multi-cat household, it can get stinky real quick! And Malvi does NOT like using stinky litter boxes.

On the 5th Day of Christmas, a hooman gave Basil... 🎶🐾

𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀! Well, if he's being honest, he would prefer a whole fried chimkin, but he also knows that he'll suffer the itchy consequences of such a treat. Being the mature guy that he is, he has agreed to prioritize his gut and his overall health. He doesn't mind powdered probiotics (as meal topper) or in chewable form. Beggars can't be choosers, he says!

We have started receiving Christmas gifts from our hooman friends, and we are so grateful! 💝We work hard to provide their basic needs, and donations like this help ensure that these needs are always met. Thank you to Khaye and friends for the support!

On the 4th Day of Christmas, a hooman gave Vivi... 🎶🐾

𝗔 𝗰𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲! Would you believe it? This disabled kitty is a fantastic climber. We have found Vivi on top of loft beds and window sills, looking down on her subjects. Because she can't run and jump like her cat siblings, we would love to give her as many safe climbing opportunities as possible. We just know how much she would enjoy having a cat tree.

𝗔 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗼𝘅! In a multi-cat household, litter boxes are an absolute necessity. Especially for our macho guy, Kiko, who hates sharing! Our litter boxes are getting tired, and some of them are cracked in places. Kiko may not admit it, but a brand new litter box is at the top of a practical cat's Christmas wishlist.

Unsurprisingly, pets given during the holidays are often neglected or abandoned.

This is because gifting a pet means we deny a potential owner the chance to plan a life as a caregiver. Like any life-changing decision, pets deserve proper consideration and thorough research. They deserve an owner who is willing to make the sacrifices to care for them.

However well-meaning, it's often not up to us to decide whether our friend, family, or acquaintance is ready for such a responsibility.

It's best to show compassion and choose a gift that doesn't simultaneously burden our recipient and potentially harm animals.

On the 2nd Day of Christmas, a hooman gave Skater... 🎶🐾

𝗔 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗡𝗲𝗳𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰! At 7 years old, Skater still thinks he's a puppy. But his hoomans know better. He is not as quick as he was when we first took him home in 2019. He has also become susceptible to urinary infections. Nefrotec has become part of his maintenance kit. We sometimes receive donated Nefrotec, but we want to make sure that he has a steady supply.

This is Pyra. She's just like any other playful cat.

Occasionally, she'll disrupt the peace in our living room; an orange fireball sprinting across the floor, bouncing off walls, climbing chairs, and grabbing snacks from our hands. Y'know, typical orange cat behavior.

But unlike any other playful cat, Pyra is blind.

People often assume that special needs animals are frail and boring. But she is proof that this cannot be farther from the truth.

Her disability does not make her frail, and it certainly does not make her boring. Trust us - our hands are full with shenanigans from this feisty orange cat!

So if fun is what you're looking for in a pet, please consider a special needs animal. They might surprise you, as Pyra surprised us 🧡🐱

Pets can undoubtedly bring joy to any home they are welcomed to. For this reason, it's easy to see why they seem like good gifts.

However, there's a lot more to pets than the initial excitement of getting one. When you gift someone a pet, you are really gifting them chores and obligations.

Pets given over the holidays are often abandoned due to unpreparedness. In contrast, people who are given a chance to bond with an animal and prepare for their arrival are more likely to commit to their pet furever. This should be the goal.

Consider the following ways a pet owner should be prepared:

1. Desire for A Pet

A pet owner should - very obviously - want to have a pet in the first place, and are keen to shoulder the responsibility of having one.

2. Financial Expenses

A pet owner should be prepared for pet-related expenses such as vet check-ups, food, vaccinations, veterinary confinement, toys, and other necessities.

3. Lifestyle Changes

A pet owner should be willing to adjust or make sacrifices to accommodate their new pet.

4. Lifetime Commitment

A pet owner should stick to this responsibility for as long as their pet is alive—that means 10-20 years' worth of expenses and lifestyle accommodation. They can't just turn their back on their pet because they changed their mind.

If the potential pet owner doesn't meet all four criteria, it's certainly not a good idea to gift them a pet. It's also cruelty to proceed with gifting, knowing that a pet may not be cared for.

Before sticking a bow on any animal, we encourage you to reflect on how you would feel if someone had given you a box of responsibilities for Christmas—because that's what pets are.

They deserve a furever home, not just a holiday vacation.

Most of our residents are Aspins, or more colloquially, mutts.

Some of them were from a shelter, some with special needs, and some rescued as a puppy, but all of them were taken in for the same reason anyone should take in a pet: because we are committed to a lifetime of responsible pet care.

Seeing them happy and loved brings our hearts so much joy. Today (and every day) we celebrate them.

Senior pets, with their distinct quirks and personalities, bring just as much joy and light to their furever homes as their younger friends. And it's not only us who think so - here we share the reflections and experiences of other senior pet owners.

STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREAUS 🦠 Seeberger is having a tough time. He is fighting off this bacteria that has proven to be hard to kill. It spread fast, and we were advised by our vets to move him away from the other animals. We are not sure how he contracted it as he has been an indoor cat since the day we took him home 4-5 years ago. What's clear is that we now have to take serious precautions to stop it from spreading further. At the end of this video, you'll catch a glimpse of the lesions around his neck. He is currently on Oxacillin, one of three types of antibiotic that could effectively treat his condition, and it has to be injected 3x a day. We are thankful for doctors Tristan and Jonathan Lugtu of Petwell Animal Clinic - Angeles for working hard to source it for Seegerger, going as far as contacting clinics and suppliers to do so. We continue to give him affection, giving him pets and scratches whenever we can. It has become his most favorite thing in the world. It's amazing, after being so aggressive towards humans for years. Please get well soon, little guy. We hate seeing you like this 🥺❤️‍🩹 #bffsseeberger
